Pre-production on Saw VII has already begun ... so despite the poor box office for Saw VI, the Saw series is far from over. Saw VII will look to revitalize the franchise, at least financially, with the series stepping into 3-D territory for the first time. Tobin Bell spoke to Fearnet about what it will be like to bring Jigsaw to the third dimension.
It will be an interesting experience. I'll be doing the same thing. Possibly doing it differently, like saying, "Reach out this way!" But I am going to be doing exactly what I always do. I am more concerned with the quality of the drama than I am in the special effects, I'll leave that to someone else. That's not my job. Has there ever been a movie franchise as user-friendly as the “Saw” films? “Saw VI,” the latest installment, may have a new director (Kevin Greutert), but the writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, collaborating on their third consecutive “Saw,” make sure that it’s as customer-service-oriented as ever.
Somewhere within the Saw universe’s ridiculously convoluted back story is a film showing how the dying “Jigsaw Killer” John Kramer (Tobin Bell) won the lottery, set up corporate offices, and hired legions of worker elves to build a “torture district” the size of Disneyland. Since Saw has become the 21st century’s Friday The 13th—an unstoppable once-a-year franchise with a signature villain—it only makes sense that in both cases, the sixth entry has proven to be surprisingly better than expected. Not that Saw VI takes the series into any surprising new directions, nor does it make much that’s fresh out of the saga’s stock ingredients. Yet it stacks up as a scarier and more satisfying viewing experience than the last few sequels.
Whether it’s due to the way director Kevin Greutert (the longtime Saw editor making his debut at the helm) and returning VI and V scripters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan spin their narrative, or maybe the fact that I’m just getting soft, the nagging issues that have plagued all the previous movies didn’t nag quite so much this time. According to longtime Saw editor and now first-time director Kevin Greutert, coming up with new and interesting ways to kill people is not as easy as one might imagine, especially when you've already come up with a gauntlet of gory deaths in not one but five previous films. "There's no point in trying to hide it," Greutert said in a roundtable interview in Los Angeles last week. "I think the films have this longevity because we've managed to rise to the task, somehow. But, it made me want to cry sometimes, sitting in a room, brainstorming and pounding my head against the wall. You can think of cool ways to kill people, but it still has to fit in with our story."

Despite the tagline for Saw V, audiences left theaters last year with only one thing to say: “I can believe how it ends.” But one year and another Saw later, the creators insist that fans will be much happier with the new installment.
“I learned a lot,” says series editor and Saw VI director Kevin Greutert, “because I spent so much time in the cutting room with the previous directors. We’ve talked about all this stuff up and down and the history of movies and horror. Six years! Six movies! Can you believe it? It seems like it was just yesterday we were all hearing about this twisted short film by some whippersnappers named James Wan and Leigh Whannell, but today their baby "Saw" is the flagship franchise for the entire horror film industry. Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), the series' constant villain, has joined the pantheon of scary movie greats like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. It's a strange week for new releases, primarily because the latest, sixth entry in the "Saw" franchise is hitting theaters a full week before Halloween. Traditionally, each new "Saw" hits on the Friday before the year's trick or treaters emerge. Following a trend set with last year's "Saw V," the new entry will have a week to breathe before the Halloween festivities begin. Expect lots more Jigsaw puzzling and gore-nography in "Saw VI," which joins newcomer director Kevin Greutert with writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who penned "Saw IV" onwards.

The release of Saw VI is just around the corner, but it's never too early to talk about the future. Producer Mark Burg and co-screenwriter Marcus Dunstan spoke with Collider and revealed what fans can look forward to in Saw VII and VIII. Burg claims that VIII may be the end for the series.
We're definitely making Saw VII. We're starting in January, and it's going to be in 3-D. The storyline that we started in Saw V and carry through Saw VI, ends at Saw VIII. Where it goes beyond that, I couldn't tell you. In my mind and in [producer] Oren [Koule]'s mind, we have the story threaded through Saw VIII. After that, I can't tell you that the franchise will continue.

Found via Bloody-Disgusting, all of the five photos focus on one particular character from the sixth installment of the thriller series. One picture in particular presents a new deadly trap, while another one exposes some clues written on the wall.

When the first Saw movie came out in 2004, it was a relatively new look at the serial killer movie with a nice twist ending that surprised audiences. Every year since then, however, audiences have been assaulted with an unrelenting barrage of blood and stupid that is perpetuated by consistent box office success (though last year's, Saw V, witnessed returns drop to $56.7 million domestically.)
