Spotted: Sylvester Stallone Meets A Hero In Los Angeles

28 December 2009 8:52 AM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Every day a multitude of stars wanders through the halls of MTV News to talk about their latest projects and goof around with our intrepid correspondents. But sometimes we catch stars elsewhere, and that's why we put together Spotted!, a daily compendium of stars in the wild.

The great thing about Christmas is that everybody has their own set of traditions. For some, the holiday is specifically reserved for family and friends. For basketball superstar Kobe Bryant, Christmas is about taking on the NBA's top competition on a high-profile stage. His Los Angeles Lakers are a staple of the Christmas Day television lineup, and this year was no different, as the Lakers welcomed LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers into the Staples Center for a highlight-filled showdown. Though Bryant nearly put up a triple-double (35 points, nine rebounds and eight assists), the Lakers fell to the Cavs 102-87. It wouldn't be a Lakers game without celebrities, »

Ninja Assassin Clip: Rain vs. Sho Kosugi

11 December 2009 9:14 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Ninja Assassin” has already come out, but our UK viewers won’t be able to see it until January 8, 2010. It’s a good film, and I really liked it. It’s actually one of the better action movies I’ve seen all year, and once the inevitable Best Of 2009 list goes up, it’ll definitely be on it. For those who haven’t seen it yet, Empire has premiered a fight clip from the movie. This is towards the end, with Rain’s Raizo having returned to his old stomping grounds and has one last obstacle to overcome — his adopted father (played by the legendary Sho Kosugi) who raised him and turned him into an assassin. This is part of their battle. Great stuff. And if you’re in the States and haven’t seen the film yet, and you like martial arts action, don’t miss it, go see it now. »

Ninja Assassin Fight Clip

11 December 2009 2:00 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Ninja Assassin comes out on January 8, but you don't have to wait that long to see Raizo (Rain) open a big ol' can of ninja-flavoured whoop ass on his former mates in the ninja clan lead by Ozunu (Shô Kosugi). Or in this clip, kinda getting his own ass kicked by Ozunu himself. In the film, Raizo teams up with an Interpol agent (Naomie Harris) to take down his former clan, which gathers in orphans to train and brainwash and turn into ninjas. Raizo has to hunt down former teammates and family to ensure his own freedom. As for the title, our Dan has been arguing that it's a tautology because all ninjas are assassins, but we're saying that it works since it's about an assassin of ninjas. Yes, that's really the sort of thing we argue about.Expect more action like this on January 8.  »

Naomie Harris Will Teach A First Grader

1 December 2009 5:45 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Naomie Harris is easily the 10th-best thing about Ninja Assassin, given that her role is to be the "regular" girl thrown into these extraordinary circumstances, and all she gets to do is scream and look shocked and occasionally swap one-liners with Rain. But that hasn't stopped her from parlaying the role into what sounds like a much meatier one, playing Kenyan teacher Jane Obinchu, who winds up supporting a very, very unusual first-grader. The film, in fact, is called The First Grader, and according to Variety it tells the true story of 84-year-old Kenyan man Kimani Ngang Margue, who wanted to take advantage of Kenya's new initiative to give free elementary education to all its citizens. At first they refused to let him sit in the classroom with 6-year-olds, but thanks to the support of Obinchu and others, he took the government to court to earn the right. Sadly I've »

First Official Images of Jackie Chan & Jaden Smith in The Karate Kid

30 November 2009 8:35 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

People Magazine, (via Cinematical) has revealed the first official images from The Karate Kid remake which is set to hit theaters on June 11, 2010. Originally thought to be The Kung Fu Kid, this is in fact a remake of the classic 80s staple film right down to the name. The film is slightly different in story though revolving around Dre (Smith), a skateboarding video game buff who moves to China after his single mother is forced to go there for work. Unable to speak Chinese, Dre finds it hard to settle in and gets beat up by the local bully. Chan plays Mr. Han, a maintenance man who spots his black-eye and offers to teach him both martial arts and Chinese so he can defend against the students at the nearby school of kung-fu.

Ask a Ninja Assassin

30 November 2009 6:36 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Old internet meme Ask a Ninja is back and relevant again, thanks to his new review of Ninja Assassin, which he deems "Saving Private Ryan for ninjas." He touches on how the film is more a comedy than anything else (exceptionally true), why you would ever want to name your kid "Rain," and the redundancy of the title itself. Anyone want to go take a ride in my automobile car? Check it out below, and I will reinforce that this movie is in no way worthwhile unless you want a masters class on how not to render CGI blood. »

Daily Diversion: Ask a Ninja Reviews Ninja Assassin

30 November 2009 4:49 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

"This is like the Saving Private Ryan for ninjas!" After having to sit through Ninja Assassin at Fantastic Fest, I was personally clamoring for some real ninja action -- something that didn't feel like a hyper-stylized cartoon. And something that didn't star Rain. Luckily, my all-time favorite online entity Ask a Ninja is out to give us just that with their review of James McTeigue's body-impaling opus. As you will see below, the real ninja's take on the matter is far more hilarious than Rain's bad acting, his threats of killing you if you don't see it over New Moon are far more menacing, and in a way, we're more attracted to him than we are Naomi Harris. Alright, that last part isn't exactly true. Either way, you should watch today's Daily Diversion below, in which a real ninja reviews Ninja Assassin... hilariously. Have a video that you'd like to share as a Daily Diversion »

Ninja Assassin movie delivered very intense, graphic action. Warner Bros. Pictures unleashed their new intense, graphic action movie, "Ninja Assassin" this weekend. I just watched it,and I must say that it had to be the most graphic, violent, action packed movie I've ever seen. They held nothing back with this one. It stars: Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Sho Kosugi, and Rick Yune. "Ninja Assassin" revolved around the character, Raizo (Rain) and how he was raised by the Ozunu Clan to become a murdering Ninja Assassin. However, Ozunu knew the clan was evil, and after watching them kill his friend and murdering for them, he finally reached his last straw when they asked him to kill a girl who tried to escape the clan. He fought back, and eventually escaped . Years later, he meets the Ozunu Clan again »

Ninja Assassin Movie Review

27 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

Make no mistake, in Ninja Assassin you get everything you could ever want out of a movie titled "Ninja Assassin." There are ninjas, with plenty of hot ninja action. Lots of swords, and the metallic slicing noise that signifies there is a blade on screen, even if it touches only air. Ridiculous amounts of blood. And Sho Kasugi. It's got a "ninja" and Two "ass"es in the title, you know it's gonna kick your ass. Truth be told, Ninja Assassin is the greatest movie Cannon Films never made.

The plot revolves around a ninja, played by Korean pop superstar Rain. Rain looks like he was a pop superstar, but all those years of bitter rage finally get to manifest themselves in an ass kicking orgy. As a child, Rain (whose character actually has a name I didn't bother to learn because it's a ninja movie and that's an unimportant »

‘Ninja Assassin’ Movie Gets Mediocre Reviews From Top Movie Critics

27 November 2009 10:29 AM, PST | OnTheFlix | See recent OnTheFlix news »

'Ninja Assassin' movie gets mediocre reviews from top movie critics. Warner Bros. Pictures new action flick, "Ninja Assassin" didn't amaze the critics with its debut this weekend. It stars : Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Sho Kosugi, and Rick Yune. The critics gave it pretty mixed reviews, but overall, they were mediocre. Wesley Morris from the Boston Globe gave it a C-. He stated, "this long, thanklessly repetitive slice-kick-and-shoot-’em-up has nothing to offer but the aggravating awareness that Jet Li and Jason Statham have done it better." Geoff Berkshire over at the Chicago Tribune gave it a D. He said, "The rotten clichés pile up faster than the bodies in this Z-movie disaster." »

Ninja Assassin Movie Review: Cutting All the Fun out of Martial Arts

27 November 2009 1:44 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I'm not going to over-simplify and proclaim that making a good ninja movie is the easiest thing in the world. But I never would have guessed that doing so is as difficult as James McTeigue's Ninja Assassin makes it appear. This is a big-budget movie with a top-flight crew and a star blessed with undeniable magnetism, not to mention the R-rated freedom to provide the copious blood and gore that so many genre fans crave. Yet it plays no better than a cheap direct to DVD feature. Ninja Assassin is a forgettable throwaway, a waste of creative talent and the audience's time. Like a relic from old Hollywood, only with a lot more blood, the film exists as a would-be star-making vehicle for the Korean actor/pop star Rain, who impressed the Wachowskis and producer Joel Silver while working on Speed Racer. The biggest surprise of this film is that, »

Review: Ninja Assassin

Plot: A Un investigator (Naomi Harris), becomes the target of a deadly Ninja clan, when she threatens to expose their existence. Her only hope is a young, rogue ninja, Raizo (Rain), who breaks with the clan after his master (Sho Kosugi), kills the woman he loves. Review: I had high hopes for Ninja Assassin. I love a good ninja flick, having grown up on a steady diet of them as a youngster. When I heard the Wachowskis were re-teaming with V For Vendetta director James McTeigue, for a »

James McTeigue Interview, Ninja Assassin

26 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.

As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.

McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City. »

Ninja Assassin Review

26 November 2009 3:58 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Ninja Assassin had a lot of potential to become the dream film of many fanboys. And until those fanboys see it, it may remain so. However, I found my dream slightly shattered after witnessing the film for myself. The first area in which this film fails, and the element that works entirely to its detriment, is in story. For a movie like this to work without exception we either need to believe in the ninja as a real being traveling the world unnoticed and assassinating people, or we need to not care that they aren’t real…read more [Joblo]

Ninja Assassin is a convincing, reasonably co-ordinated action movie. Nothing special, but lovers of the genre will enjoy the workouts, especially if they bring night-vision glasses. On the plus side, Harris is an intriguing damsel in distress. And our action hero moves well, although he’s more Mist than Rain when delivering dialogue. »

Movie Reviews: “Ninja Assassin”

26 November 2009 12:24 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Ninja Assassin, starring Korean pop star Rain, is getting the predictably lousy reviews such films ordinarily elicit. "No one expects much from a film like this, except R-rated bloodletting with some excitement to it," Michael Phillips remarks in the Chicago Tribune, noting that the "target audience" has "already spent weeks vivisecting bad guys on one gaming system or another, most of them without turning into sadistic killers in real life." As usual, Kyle Smith in the New York Post offers the most cutting put-down: "Not to brag, but who is this Ninja Assassin fellow compared to me? He: gets sliced to the bone by whirling blades, is blasted unconscious by stun guns and does handstands on a bed of nails. I: sat through Old Dogs." [The critics themselves are eliciting reviews of their reviews on their newspapers' own blogs. One writer posted this message on the Post's movie blog: "I haven't seen this yet, but all I can say to all these 'big time critics' out there is...Are You All Retarded. The Critics in the New York Post, La Times and all these other big name places must really hate action, gore and martial arts; because I'm all for it. I'm so anxious to see this thing that I'm tearing the hair off my head in antisipation (sic)."] »

New Ninja Assassin Red Band Trailer

26 November 2009 7:47 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

With Ninja Assassin going on general release in the USA, a new red band trailer has been released online and it is very different from the previous trailer. Although this new trailer has been released to help promote the film for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, I suspect the complete change in tone from the last trailer is partially to help combat the overwhelming negative criticism the film has generally received so far.

Ninja Assassin has been criticized by many for its overly complex and unnecessary plot, although it has received much praise for its stylish action sequences. Whereas the previous trailer was more dramatic and attempted to display some of the film’s back-story, this new trailer is basically an entire minute of nonstop ninja action.

The film stars Korean pop idol Rain, is produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski Bros. (The Matrix Trilogy), is written by prolific science »

Kevin Carr’s Weekly Report Card for 11.25.09

25 November 2009 10:23 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Old Dogs Studio: Disney Rated: PG for some mild rude humor. Starring: John Travolta, Robin Williams, Kelly Preston, Seth Green and Ella Bleu Travolta Directed by: Walt Becker What it’s about: Robin Williams plays a sports marketing businessman who learns that he has seven-year-old twins. When their mother needs to go to jail for two weeks, she begs him to take care of them and learn to be a father. He takes on the challenge, but it proves to be a wild time along with his business partner, played by John Travolta. What I liked: There are times when the slapstick actually works in this film. It's not often, but it happens. The best part of the film is Seth Green as the marketing protege who never quite makes the grade. Sadly, the funniest scene in the film is when the characters sneak into the gorilla enclosure at the zoo, which »
