Out doing promotion for "Sherlock Holmes", British thesp Mark Strong ("Body of Lies," "Rocknrolla") tells Cinema Blend that most of his work on the upcoming "John Carter of Mars" film will not involve much CG.
"My character doesn't actually get involved in any of the motion-capture stuff. All the stuff is live action. Although I can shift my shape, so I have to be photographed by a 360-degree camera. I can adapt into anything. That's going to be my particular talent" says Strong who plays Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems.
He adds that "there's some filming in Utah, but most of it is in a studio outside of London". Joining him are the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker, Thomas Haden Church and James Purefoy.
Andrew Stanton helms the project currently scheduled for a Summer 2012 release. »

Director Andrew Stanton would currently be in the midst of shooting John Carter of Mars, if the original start date had not been pushed back from November until early 2010. All of the lead actors have been in place for several months, with Taylor Kitsch in the title role. Back in September, actress Lynn Collins, who will star opposite her X-Men Origins: Wolverine co-star as the Martian princess Dejah Thoris, said that some hair and makeup tests were being done.
Apparently, however, the casting process has not even been completed yet, which could account for some of the delay in the production. Spoiler TV recently released a casting call sheet listing several supporting roles, including one "motion capture" Martian role.

He hasn't been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but Taylor Kitsch's status for season five of Friday Night Lights is questionable.
The incredible drama - which is currently airing on Direct and will premiere on NBC this spring - will start working on its likely final season in March.
But that coincides with Kitsch's filming schedule on the movie John Carter of Mars. As a result, he says Kitsch “will miss part” of the season, producer Jason Katims told Michael Ausiello.
“[But] we are communicating with the [John Carter] production to work out the schedule so that Taylor can be in as much of season 5 as possible," he said.
There’s been no official announcement that the show will go off the air after its fifth season, but Katims added that “everybody is operating under that assumption.”
As for the current season, which we've been watching on Directv, we »

Welcome to your Monday morning television briefing. Bad news for Tim Riggins fans. Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Friday Night Lights executive producer Jason Katims has confirmed that Taylor Kitsch will "will miss part" of the production of Season Five of Friday Night Lights, due to his role in Disney's feature film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burrough's "John Carter of Mars." But there's still hope that they can work around Kitsch's schedule. "We are communicating with the [John Carter] production to work out the schedule so that Taylor can be in as much of season 5 as possible," said Katims. Production begins on the fifth season in March. (Entertainment Weekly's Ausiello Files) HBO has given a pilot order to Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films for an untitled drama about a woman who walks out on her perfect marriage and children in order to fulfill her secret fantasies in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles. »

One of the most integral and interesting characters on Friday Night Lights may be out of the lineup for much of the rest of the season. And he may not be back for next season, either. Taylor Kitsch could be out of Friday Night Lights after the next few episodes. Michael Ausiello is reporting that executive producer Jason Katims confirmed that Taylor's conflicting schedule with a big screen project has mucked up the works.
Taylor's playing the title character in John Carter of Mars, a big screen adaptation of the famous Edgar Rice Burroughs' books, which isn't slated to be released until 2012, but will require extensive filming. It doesn't look like he'll be able to fit more of Friday Night Lights into the mix. And a lot of the predicament could be on the Disney side; will they free up his shooting schedule for John Carter to let him play Tim Riggins. »

It looks like Tim Riggins will be warming the bench for at least a portion of Friday Night Lights' fifth season. Executive producer Jason Katims confirms that Taylor Kitsch will be off filming his lead role in John Carter of Mars, Disney's big-screen adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' book series, during production of Fnl's probable final season. As a result, he says Kitsch "will miss part" of the season. " we are communicating with the [John Carter] production to work out the schedule so that Taylor can be in as much of season 5 as possible." The news comes as production on Fnl's fourth season, »

I don't know if you caught last night's 2009 Scream Awards on Spike TV last night. But if you didn't, then you missed out on one of the strangest parades of Hollywood back-patting ever staged. For those unfamiliar with this new heir to the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the Scream Awards are ostensibly all about celebrating the best in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror on both the big and the small screen. And just to show that the event is even cooler than the MTV Movie Awards, the categories honor such superlatives as Best Horror Movie, Best Villain, and my personal favorite, »

Clear eyes, shirtless Riggins, can't lose! (Wait, is that not how the mantra goes?) The brilliant Friday Night Lights returns to TV tonight at 9 p.m. on DirecTV's channel 101, and even though Dillon football is in a state of upheaval, a few things remain the same: the heart, the humor, and yes, Taylor Kitsch will still "forget" to button those tricky buttons from time to time. But the big question is this: What happens to the series now that beloved characters like Riggins and Zach Gilford's Matt Saracen have graduated? Are we losing them forever? And what happens with their lovely ladies, Minka Kelly's Lyla Garrity and Aimee Teegarden's Julie Taylor? We caught up with »

Released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK last Monday, 20th Century Fox's X-Men Origins: Wolverine has already broken records for disc sales in the USA.
Over the past week, I've been steadily working my way through the Blu-ray with its hours of bonus features.
Wolverine has been a somewhat controversial project. There were persistent rumours of production troubles; an unfinished version of the movie was leaked online a month before its cinema release; and when it did come out, it was clawed by critics and received mostly negative reviews.
Some have said the DNA of the 20th Century Fox franchise has mutated into a mess or even a monstrosity.
So what's it like? Is this a Blu-ray worth adding to your collection? Well, let's find out...

Other than a few cast additions, the last news we had heard about Pixar's already-delayed live-action production John Carter of Mars came from actress Lynn Collins, who will play the Martian princess Dejah Thoris opposite Taylor Kitsch. Collins said that "some hair and makeup tests" had begun, but knew little else about the production.
Now, two-time Academy Award-nominated actor Willem Dafoe confirms that pre-production on the CGI/live-action mash-up is chugging along. Dafoe will portray Tars Tarkas, a four-armed, nine-foot-tall Martian, or "Barsoomian," as they are referred to in the classic 11-volume novel series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Dafoe said that although his character will be rendered digitally, his performance should shine through, thanks to the incredible skills of the Pixar artists.
[Pixar will] use my face, but they'll enhance it in a way — both after and before — in a way that I may not be recognizable. But, I'm good with that. »

Not long after the announcement that Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins were cast in the lead roles in the upcoming adaptation of John Carter of Mars, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ series of novels, we found out the talented Willem Dafoe would be playing an important character in the film(s) as well.
At the time, we knew that Dafoe would be playing the role of Tars Tarkas, a big green Martian who eventually befriends the Kitsch’s John Carter, after an unfriendly beginning to their relationship. Tarkas is a warrior and leader of his people and a very unique one at that because he, against the laws and norms of his society, shows compassion and sympathy, and even had a child secretly with the woman he loved (child bearing is a major criminal offense of his people) - he actually believes war isn’t the answer for his kind.

Willem Dafoe is out promoting Antichrist, but a few people have also got him to talk a bit about his upcoming role in John Carter of Mars, the hybrid live-action CGI animation Disney feature to be directed by Pixar's Andrew Stanton. We know the basic story, that Confederate officer John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is transported to Mars and initially finds himself among the green, four-armed Tharks. Dafoe plays Tars Tarkas, a Thark warrior. Now we've got a few more details on what to expect from the film; even though it's all very early stuff, having seen some of Avatar we can draw some conclusions. The key quotes come from an AICN interview. The first pertinent line should clarify a point that I think some people have found confusing: this is primarily a Disney movie, not a Pixar one. (Though Pixar will likely be involved in the animation process -- again, »

Willem Dafoe is a special man—a man deserving, like Tracy Morgan, of his own Oh Please Join Twitter campaign—and anything he has to say is intriguing to me. And it's especially intriguing if what he's talking about is "John Carter of Mars," Edgar Rice Burroughs' sci-fi series currently getting the big screen adaptation treatment from Pixar eye-candy guru Andrew Stanton ("Wall-e").
With shooting set to start in January, Dafoe's gearing up to play Tars Tarkas, a many-limbed green Martian warrior who befriends Carter (Taylor Kitsch) after he gets mysteriously transported from Civil War-era America to the Red Planet. And after getting a chance to see early takes on what his character will look like, Dafoe is pumped.
"I’ve seen renderings," the actor told MTV's Josh Horowitz recently while promoting "Antichrist" in Toronto. "Andrew Stanton comes out of Pixar and the amount of research and development that »
