Second-place Idol Contestant Ahead In Record Sales

22 August 2008 10:34 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

David Archuleta, who was thought to be a sure bet to win last season's American Idol -- but came in second to David Cook -- may be beating Cook where it counts -- in record sales. Billboard magazine has placed Archuleta's debut single "Crush" in second place on its Hot 100 singles chart. That bested the third-place debut of Cook's "The Time of My Life" in June. The trade publication observed that "Crush" marked the biggest bow by an Idol contestant for a song never performed on the show. The two Davids are due to challenge one another again in November when their first album CDs are released.

David Cook Rocks Prime-Time National Anthem

What's harder – belting out hits on American Idol or singing the national anthem before an NBA playoff game? "The nerves are way worse [than on Idol]," David Cook told reporters moments before his Tuesday night rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. "It's the one song you don't want to mess up. I'm going to try not to notice Jack Nicholson sitting in the front row and think about the lyrics." The only saving grace about his performance before game three of the Celtics-Lakers NBA championship series? "No matter what I do, I don't have Simon [Cowell] telling me how dreadful it was," the 25-year-old joked.

Archuleta Lands Record Deal

6 June 2008 5:09 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

American Idol runner-up David Archuleta is set to release an album later this year after signing a major record deal - even though he failed to win the U.S. TV show.

Archuleta was widely tipped to come out triumphant on the TV talent competition, but he eventually lost by a landslide 12 million votes to opponent David Cook in the final episode last month.

The 17-year-old's contract with 19 Recordings/Jive Records mirrors the paths of former 'Idol' stars Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson and Clay Aiken, who all lost in past seasons but have successfully launched careers in the film, music and theatre arenas.

In a statement released Thursday, series creator Simon Fuller says: "It was fascinating to watch David's journey through 'Idol'. He is a genuine pop star, and is a gifted singer."

Daughtry managed to achieve the best-selling album in the U.S. in 2007, while Hudson won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in the same year for her role in Dreamgirls. Aiken finished a four-month stint on Broadway last month playing Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot.

The Other David Wins Idol

22 May 2008 10:25 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

After being declared the champ by American Idol judges on Tuesday night, 17-year-old David Archuleta saw voting viewers take the title away from him on Wednesday and award it to 25-year-old David Cook. The show's judges on Tuesday were joined by several talk-show hosts, entertainment magazine commentators, and newspaper columnists in forecasting a win for the teenager. When host Ryan Seacrest announced on the show Wednesday night that the final vote was not even close -- 56 percent to 44 percent -- much of the audience appeared to believe that Archuleta was the big winner. Then, just before the announcement, judge Simon Cowell, who had praised Archuleta the previous night by saying that he had "won by a knockout," told Cook that he was sorry that his words verged on the "disrespectful" to him. Cowell said that when he watched the show at home, "it wasn't quite so clear cut as we called it." Seacrest said that a record 97.5 million votes had been cast by viewers, with Cook winning by a margin of 12 million.
