5 reasons to see Brad's Status

5 reasons to see Brad's Status5 reasons to see Brad's StatusAdriana Floridia9/26/2017 2:49:00 Pm

Ben Stiller's new film, Brad's Status, sees the actor in a role that has grown to be his forte.

While Stiller is primarily known for his work in comedies, he's also ventured into the indie film world, and often plays a man having a mid-life crisis. No crisis has been quite as intense as the one we get from him in Brad's Status, the new film from Mike White that gets us deep inside of his protagonist's head. Stiller plays a father who is touring universities with his college-bound son in Boston, all the while realizing that his friends are more successful than him, and that his son likely will be too.

Brad's Status played at Tiff earlier this month, and it was one of our favourite films of the festival. Here are 5 reasons why

Film Review: Ben Stiller in Character For Thoughtful ‘Brad’s Status’

Chicago – Everyone comes to the point when they question their choices, their life and their truth. This concept is filtered through Ben Stiller in Brad’s Status, portraying a Dad taking his son for college visits, analyzing his life through the boy, his friends, plus his own angst and fears.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

This is written and directed by Mike White (who also has a small role), his first major director debut. White has fun with the character of Brad, as well as steering him to his truth. Although Stiller’s Brad seems to have it all… comfortable lifestyle, devoted wife and loyal son, he is bedeviled by the “what ifs” and comparisons to his old college friends that start to strangle his life. It all comes together with the college visit, as Brad goes through a series of situations that test his confidence and viability. What makes this all work – and

Brad’S Status – Review

With awards season approaching it’s time to get serious at the multiplex, at least for some actors that may be best known for rowdy raunchy comedies. That may be the case for Ben Stiller who’s playing this flick’s title character. Mind you, there’s still some funny stuff in this story, we’re not in heavy, somber tragedy territory at all. It’s just that Ben is playing an “everyman”. a fellow that many of us know, or “down deep” the person staring back at us from the mirror. Oddly, this man is constantly reflecting on his past, his regrets, and choices. These concerns and worries make up the bulk of Brad’S Status.

The title Brad is played by Mr. Stiller. Brad Sloan is sliding toward the big “5-0” and shares a home in Sacramento, CA with his lovely wife Melanie (Jenna Fisher) and their eighteen

There are different ways to measure success.

This is something we learned while watching Brad's Status. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and now it's coming to Cineplex theatres. The film features an A-List cast including Ben Stiller, Jenna Fischer, Jemaine Clement, Michael Sheen, Luke Wilson, and relative newcomer Austin Abrams. Written and directed by Mike White, Brad's Status follows Brad (Stiller) and his son, Troy (Abrams) who are touring colleges together in Boston, just as Brad realizes he hasn't amounted to the man he thought he'd be, at least not in comparison to his successful, wealthy friends.

We had the chance to chat with Stiller and Abrams about the film at Tiff.

Mike White on ‘Brad’s Status,’ Ben Stiller & Mid-Life Crises

Writer and director Mike White has built a career out of the eccentric neurosis that has been part of his persona since childhood. The 47-year-old filmmaker has a unique voice which can be seen and heard in HBO’s “Enlightened,” 2000’s indie sensation “Chuck and Buck, the screenplay for “The School of Rock” and just this month in a film he both wrote and directed entitled “Brad’s Status.”

In the latter, Ben Stiller plays Brad a middle-aged man going through a mid-life crisis as he tours his son (Austin Abrams) around prospective colleges in “Brad’s Status.” Narrating the film, Brad overthinks his status in life in comparison to those he went to college with.

Described as a cross between Scream and Clueless, this "biting satire" is about two girls at a high school who decide to start killing people themselves in order to gain more social media followers.
