Fedoras, three-piece suits, pinstripes and overcoats, Johnny Depp is the very picture of 1930s sophistication in new crime flick Public Enemies, out at cinemas from tomorrow. It’s a crisp, smart style seen countless times in other gangster dramas and yet when worn by Depp it’s utterly irresistible. The actor has cultivated quite the fashion following offscreen and is famed for being a quirky chameleon onscreen, yet it’s one of his cinematic characters that has proved the most inspirational in the style stakes. The name’s Captain Jack Sparrow…

Talking to Total Film, Depp mused on the inspirational quality of his characters: “Maybe one or two of my characters have inspired some people. Children, I love it when I see youngsters dressing up as Jack Sparrow [he forgot the Captain bit!] from Pirates of the Caribbean, but that’s not vanity, it’s because we’ve fired their imaginations – and imagination is such a vital thing for them. »
