'Avatar' generates another $18M Wednesday!
James Cameron's successful sci-fi action adventure "Avatar" doesn't show any intention of slowing down at the North American box office anytime soon. Case in point: the film collected another impressive $18.4 million Wednesday, bringing its early domestic total to a superb $268.8 million after a two-week run.
Fox's "Avatar" actually gained one percent in earnings over Tuesday, scoring an average of $5,343 per theater at 3,456 locations. The film is poised for another big weekend that will certainly help it cross the $300 million mark, considering no new releases are opening wide this week (next release date is Jan. 8).
Still doing well at No. 2 Wednesday was Betty Thomas' sequel "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which picked up $11.7 million for a one-week total gross of $111.9 million. Following in third place with $9.7 million was Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes," which lifted its total gross to $93.5 million. »

Not the most exiting pic, but it sure gives us a clear look at the main character and her awfully long hair. Mandy Moore will voice Rapunzel, and the cast also includes Zachary Levi and Jason Alexander.
In the film, Rapunzel is locked in a hidden tower longing for adventure. Now an imaginative and determined teenager, she takes off on a hilarious, hair-raising escapade with the help of a dashing bandit. »

'Star Trek 2' pre-production to lift off in 2010?
29 December 2009 9:19 PM, PST
"Star Trek 2" is coming for sure, and earlier this year, director J.J. Abrams said work on the script had already begun. The plan is to have the sequel to the 2009 hit movie "Star Trek" ready for a 2011 release.
In a recent interview with MTV, Zoe Saldana, one of the film's stars, said that pre-production on the anticipated follow-up may kick off in a year or so. We'll know soon enough whether that's the start date.
"... We'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year," she said. She also said she recently talked to J.J. Abrams, who said they are still working on the script at this stage. »

Second 'How to Train Your Dragon' trailer tanks
29 December 2009 8:48 PM, PST
Back in November, we got a first look at DreamWorks Animation's upcoming 3D family adventure "How to Train Your Dragon," and clearly I remember the trailer was pretty boring and visually uninteresting.
A second preview has just hit the Web, and guess what? It is as equally disappointing as its predecessor. It's rather similar than the first trailer, and it still failed to win me over. Unfortunate, but true.
Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, this animated action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. »

'Ghostbusters III' shooting next summer?
29 December 2009 8:30 PM, PST
We've read a lot about the upcoming "Ghostbusters III" recently, but details about the sequel are still quite sketchy. Harold Ramis talked about the film earlier this year, and so did Sigourney Weaver.
Now Ramis is back with more information, although some of it is not exactly new. During an interview with Heeb, the Ramis said the project is definitely moving forward and could be shooting next summer.
He said the film may open in 2011. It will feature young Ghostbusters, even though all the old guys will apparently make an appearance as well.Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are writing the script. »

29 December 2009 8:07 PM, PST
James Cameron's "Avatar" doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon, because the sci-fi action flick bagged another impressive $19.4 million Monday. That brings its total gross to $232.1 million.
Sure, a lot of people may be off work this week and all, but this is still a rather solid amount for a pretty regular weekday. "Avatar" ended up scoring an average of $5,619 million per theater at 3,456 locations.
Following at No. 2 with a decent $12 million was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which lifted its domestic total to $87.6 million. The first film scored a total domestic gross of $217.3 million. »

Yahoo!'s most-viewed trailers of 2009 are...
28 December 2009 10:22 PM, PST
The folks at Yahoo! Movies always publish the list of the most-viewed trailers of the year, and this year's list is not entirely surprising. That said, the year's most-viewed trailers clearly aren't always the best.
The most-watched trailer is "The Twilight Saga: New Moon," which really doesn't surprise me. After all, that trailer is better than the entire film. "Moon" is followed by "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
The third most-viewed preview is "2012," followed by "Terminator Salvation." Wait, where is "Avatar"? It only made ninth place, and it's pretty much the only big surprise here. I expected it to be up higher. »

Joe Johnston's "The First Avenger: Captain America" may hit the production stage very soon. The film is currently slated for a release 2011, and according to the director, filming could start this summer.
That's right. Even though we haven't heard that much about the flick in a while, Johnston is ready to shoot this thing starting June. That's according to the folks at Fangoria, who recently interviewed him.
Johnston's new film "The Wolfman" is opening Feb. 12, 2010. He spoke to Fangoria from the art department of "The First Avenger: Captain America," a clear indication he's in full pre-production mode. »

Christopher Nolan's new thriller "Inception" will open July 16, 2010, and a brand-new teaser trailer for the film has debuted online. It looks stunning and totally intriguing, and you can check it out below.
Plot details are kept under wraps for now, and the film is still only described as an action flick set within "the architecture of the mind." Leonardo DiCaprio plays a CEO-type character involved in a scandal.
Marion Cotillard plays his wife, and Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe and Tom Hardy co-star. Nolan ("The Dark Knight") also wrote the script. »

2009 Screening Log Movie Awards Winners!
28 December 2009 6:10 AM, PST
A week ago I posted the nominations for the 1st annual Screening Log Movie Awards, and here are the winners I picked for the year 2009. These are really the best of the best of the year.
The big winner for me is "Up in the Air," which received three awards, including best film, best screenplay and best supporting actress (Vera Farmiga). Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" won two prizes.
As you can see below, the best actor category ended in a tie. It's something I don't usually like to do, but Nicolas Cage and Jeff Bridges just equally surprised me this year. Enjoy all the winners below. »

'Avatar' sequel to leave Pandora behind?
28 December 2009 12:07 AM, PST
Is it really too early to talk about an "Avatar" sequel? I don't think so. The movie is making a killing at the worldwide box office currently ($617.3 million), and James Cameron already has ideas for a follow-up.
That's right. Even though he recently said "Avatar" would first have to make a lot of money before he will jump into sequel plans, he also briefly spoke about one idea he has for a potential sequel.
The Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex interviewed the director at a recent screening, where Cameron said one idea he has is to leave Pandora and visit one or more of the planet's moon. Why not? »

'Avatar' rules international box office
27 December 2009 6:56 PM, PST
James Cameron really is the king of the world right now, considering his latest sci-fi action spectacle "Avatar" is dominating the worldwide box office. Overseas, the film bagged $145 million this weekend.
"Avatar" lifted its international total to $405 million, which means its worldwide gross currently stands at an impressive $617.3 million after a little more than one week in release. That's not bad for an early gross.
Following in second place this weekend was "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," which earned a solid $36.5 million in 42 territories. Domestically, the film grossed $77 million this week. »
