Christmas Movie Reviews: “Sherlock Holmes” and “Dr. Parnassus” Both Disappoint (but in Different Ways!)
24 December 2009 11:03 PM, PST
Two new movies open today: Sherlock Holmes (in wide release) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (in Los Angeles and New York), the film Heath Ledger was working on when he died.
Let’s look at each in turn:
Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. Watson
Let’s get one thing clear from the start: there is nothing gay about the new movie adaptation of Sherlock Holmes.
Earlier this year, star Robert Downey Jr. made headlines when he was quoted as saying the movie was about "two men who happen to be roommates, wrestle a lot and share a bed. It's bad-ass."
Cue the predictable conservative outrage from film critic Michael Medved and the idiots on talk radio.
But now that the movie is opening, other critics are chiming in on that meme, seeing some sort of gay subtext between Holmes (Downey Jr. »

The Morning Meme (Thursday, December 24, 2009)
24 December 2009 6:42 AM, PST
Info Meme
As if I wasn't already finding him swoon-worthy,, a newly single Jake Gyllenhaal stepped out in New York City last night to a benefit for God's Love We Deliver, an HIV/AIDS charity. People bills it as a guy's night affair, as the party was thrown by Justin Theroux, Mark Ronson and Scott Campbell. Still, cute, single, and doing good? Call me Jake!
File this under news I didn't expect to ever hear, but the official Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has issued a statement praising The Simpsons. The Vatican says that without the residents of Springfield, "many today wouldn't know how to laugh" and even said it could be possible to come up with a "Simpsonian philosophy." Okely-dokely then.
I know I show my true colors as an Anglophile fairly frequently in these Memes, but one thing that does put me off is how intrusive it feels law enforcement is at times. »

2009’s Naughty and Nice List!
24 December 2009 5:06 AM, PST
Before the Ball dropped in Times Square to ring in 2009, the Great Gay Debate was underway in America. Prop. 8 was the catalyst, and in its wake everyone had an opinion on Glbt civil rights. We listened. We blogged. But someone else was watching too. Someone who sees you when you're sleeping, who knows when you're awake. Someone who knows when you've been bad or good — and keeps a list to prove it.
Yep, Santa Claus is coming to town in just a few days, and we've managed to get our hands on his 2009 Naughty and Nice list. The folks on the Naughty list will get a lump of clean burning coal in their stockings this year, and a rainbow-colored Asshat. The Nice list will receive an AfterElton.com Crown of Visibility, and "Glee: The Music, Volumes 1 and 2."

"Nurse Jackie" Creator Says Show Still Gay; Harvey Fierstein to Guest Star
23 December 2009 6:56 PM, PST
Haaz Sleimann as Mo-Mo and Edie Falco as Nurse Jackie
Earlier this week it was reported that Showtime's hit series Nurse Jackie had dropped the character of Mo-Mo (Haaz Sleimann), the gay nurse who is one of Jackie's (Edie Falco) closest friends, for the second season. No explanation was given except to say the character's storyline "had run its course."
AfterEllen.com editor Karman Kregloe spoke with Linda Wallem, the series' co-creator about what was in store for the show gay-wise, despite Sleimann's departure. Karman was kind enough to ask some questions for us and share the scoop!
AfterEllen.com: The Advocate reported this week that with the departure of Haaz Sleiman, who plays gay nurse "Mo Mo," Nurse Jackie is going to be "less gay" in the 2nd season. Care to respond?
Linda Wallem: Nothing could be further from the truth. That's an assumption on their part based »

"A Single Man" Suddenly Decides To Make the Yuletide Gay
23 December 2009 1:57 PM, PST
Nothing gay about that. Wait...
We've made some noise about Tom Ford's directorial debut, A Single Man, based on the Christopher Isherwood novel. The book is unabashadly the story of a gay man's life, and indeed, the movie holds true to that. But the marketing has been somewhat straightlaced, playing up the relationship between George Falconer (Colin Firth) and Charley (Julianne Moore).
Perhaps reacting to a slightly lackluster opening box office, or perhaps part of the plan all along, the movie has released a set of stills and a new trailer that get to the heart of the movie, and the relationship that Colin is mourning.
And this is what every man wants to come home to.
But the trailer is what leaves little doubt to the story, and even goes a long way to explaining some of the beautiful stills that had been released in the past. »

Moving a little closer to home, it looks like Jai Rodriguez had some fun during a recent production of Rent:
And speaking of the theatre, how many of you will just die when Michael Urie and company actually hit the stage with this?
Meanwhile, Chris Colfer and the rest of the Glee kids are already prepping for spring’s new episodes, and it looks like Kurt is going to be just as fabulous as ever:

In Memoriam: 2009 Took Many Beloved Names From Us
22 December 2009 11:10 AM, PST
It was a rough year.
As we look back at 2009, it seems to be the year death came calling. Celebrities young and old passed away, each dimming the lights of Hollywood and Broadway just a bit with their passing. It seems fitting to pause for just a moment before we go off to celebrate the end of 2009, and remember those we lost.
She will always be golden.
Some remember Bea from her Broadway roles, and others for being a perfect foil to Archie Bunker. But ask any gay man about Bea, and you’ll see a mist form in their eyes as they recall her as one of the surrogate grandmothers living in a house together in Florida, forever golden.
No one quite understands the connection so many of us feel to the Golden Girls, and why it’s still so strong many years later, but let's just »

The Morning Meme (Tuesday, December 22, 2009)

Info Meme
Leading the news in decisions made in Hollywood that should never have been considered, much less funded, we find out that Columbia Pictures is going to let Phil Lord and Chris Miller direct the big screen adaptaion of the 1980s hit 21 Jump Street that launched Johnny Depp's career and causes Richard Greico to throw a bottle at the television whenever it's mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I watched 21 Jump Street. I also liked Lord and Miller's last project, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I just don't think any of those things go together in 2012, which is when they're releasing it. Fantasy casting - go!
I live in a moderately small town in West Virginia, so whenever I get to mock another place, it's like Christmas and my birthday rolled into one. Today, we have Laredo, Texas, which has achieved the dubious distinction of being the largest »

AfterElton Briefs: "Big Love" Goes Gay, Plus Soap Hunks, "Real World DC"'s Bisexual, Lady GaGa Goes Nsfw, and more.
21 December 2009 2:38 PM, PST
Happy Solstice
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
It's the shortest day of the year, so for all you folks who aren't kept in the Blungeon™ (I owe snicks a royalty for that), starting tomorrow you get more seconds of precious sunlight. Happy Solstice, to those who celebrate it. Lady GaGa was photographed by David Lachapelle for a booklet in a special, limited edition of Fame Monster. Most of the pictures are actually Nsfw, so we won't be printing them here, but she has lovely taste in bodies to be strewn at her feet. In the teaser photo on the front page, you see The Bold & The Beautiful's Brandon Beemer, who won basically every category in the Soap Hunks voting I asked you to go participate in a couple weeks ago. Gays won nada. »

Meet "Team Gay" from "Project Runway Season 7"
21 December 2009 1:19 PM, PST
Let's face it — the last season of Project Runway was pretty much a bust. The challenges were dull, the designs were uninspired, and there was no consistency with the judges.
Perhaps it had something to do with the show moving to Los Angeles, which is always a debacle (remember Laverne & Shirley?), but there was definitely something ... missing.
There's reason to be hopeful about Season 7, though, as the show will return to New York, and it appears that our favorite judges will be back.
Premiering on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at 10Pm Et, host Heidi Klum, mentor Tim Gunn, judges Michael Kors (leading designer) and Nina Garcia (fashion director for Marie Claire magazine) will be joined by 16 new designers vying for a shot to make their way to Bryant Park and show their collection in front of top industry insiders during New York Fashion Week.
There are only three four out designers that »

Gays Aren't Celebrating "Valentine's Day" New Trailer
21 December 2009 12:13 PM, PST
This is as close as they get in the trailer.
We've been keeping you updated on the star-studded movie Valentine's Day since we first heard Bradley Cooper was playing a gay man in it. We had fun with the fantasy casting, and even though Hollywood didn't take our advice, we weren't complaining about them casting Grey's Anatomy's Eric Dane in the role of the closeted football player boyfriend.
We weren't thrilled about the teaser trailer when it came out, because it almost looked like Julia Roberts and Bradley were a couple, but we mostly laughed it off since it was a teaser.
The full length trailer dropped over the weekend, and once again, Eric and Bradley don't appear together in it. In fact, the picture above is as close as they get, which is consecutive frames in the trailer. Romantic, huh?

Liveblogging "One Life To Live": The Monkey Wrench
21 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST
A scheming Nick tries to come between Kyle and Fub. But will it work?
Join us for the fun and refresh for updates!
2:05Pm Est: Roxy is firing on all cylinders today, and I love it. She sees Kyle helping the wounded Nick into Kyle's apartment, and she says "doesn't he have a mother?" Nick says "yeah, but she's not nearly as warm as you are". Roxy says "I guess it was a lousy break running into those meatheads. That'll teach you to park in a dark alley." Way to blame the victim, Rox! She pulls Kyle aside and says "What do you think Fish is going to say when he finds out you're shacking up with your ex?". The words are barely out of her mouth when Oliver saunters in with Nick's stuff and says "Where do you want this?" The look on Roxy's face is priceless.

AfterElton.com's Hero of the Year
21 December 2009 9:52 AM, PST
Last Friday's Best Gay Year Ever column included a poll which asked readers to identify their "Hero of the Year." 10-year-old Will Phillips won by a wide margin, as you can see from the results below:
We contacted Will and his mother Laura Phillips via email to congratulate him and they let us know what the family was up to after Will made headlines last month for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to make a statement for gay rights. Check out the interview after the break!
Please note, we almost never do email interviews, but given Will's age we decided that was the best approach in this instance. The questions below are either Laura typing out Will's answers or Laura answering questions herself.
AfterElton.com: Congrats on Hero of the Year, Will! Anything you'd like to say?
Will Phillips: Thank you very much for this honor. I am »

AfterElton.com's 2009 Visibility Awards!
20 December 2009 10:46 PM, PST
What?! It’s not enough that we spent the whole year providing you with insightful news and analysis on gay and bisexual entertainment – now we have to pick which 2009 projects we think best represented gay and bisexual men?!
Sorry, we’re getting a little Grinch-y around here come year-end.
But the fact is, gay and bisexual entertainment-related news is inexorably linked with the issue of visibility. If you know anything at all about the history of such entertainment, you know that it’s almost always been “controversial.” As passionate as the creators of these projects have always been, there’s been a similarly strong counter-pressure to keep these themes hidden or under wraps.
As a result, for a website like ours, covering the “news” of these projects inevitably becomes a question of championing the ones of quality (and giving the hook to those who don’t measure up, or that »

Exclusive: Rapper Ash Roth Not Gay According to Manager
20 December 2009 5:04 PM, PST
Late this afternoon the blogosphere started buzzing with reports that American rapper Ash Roth would be coming out in an interview. Terence Dean, the founder and creator of Men's Empowerment Inc. posted on his blog that "Asher Roth Admits He is the Gay Rapper From My Book."
Scooter Braun , CEO of Schoolboy Music and Roth's manager, just spoke with AfterElton.com and had the following to say.
Asher's straight. He's in a serious relationship with a woman. Someone not a fan of Asher is trying to hurt him this way in hip hop and thought this would be a way to hurt his career. Asher's probably not going to make a statement and doesn't want to dignify this. It's sad that it's almost 2010 and they think this is a way to belittle him.
I personally find it sad they would use sexual preference as something that is negative.
