Bryan Singer Is Not Not Doing Superman: Man of Steel

4 December 2008 6:23 PM, PST

I just got off the phone with big shot Hollywood filmmaker Bryan Singer who’s newest film Valkyrie is coming out on December 25th.  We spoke at length about the film, about Tom Cruise, about why people lose their minds with gossip about Tom Cruise and what it is like working with a man who can’t sneeze without being on the front page of the New York Post.  (See pic above for Singer on the set working with said man.) We’ll have a full transcript of the conversation soon, but I wanted to get something to you as quickly as possible:  Bryan Singer on Superman:  Man of Steel: Jordan Hoffman:  Bryan, I have to ask you…..The Man of Steel!  Superman! Bryan Singer:  I couldn’t – I wish I had an answer. Jh:  I’m strapping you to a lie detector right now.

George Lucas Still Has Some Rape Juice In Him

4 December 2008 4:59 PM, PST

Professional ruiner-of-things George Lucas still has a little more ruining in him.  According to our friend Scott Huver who chatted up the man at a recent L.A. event, Mr. Lucas still has his eyes on a fifth Indiana Jones movie as well as squeezing more shekels out of Star Wars.  The newest idea is to re-package the films in 3-D, but in a way that is still makes him a friggin’ mint.  To quote:  “The technology is very difficult. It exists - it’s just extremely expensive, and so what we’re trying to do is figure out a more practical way of pulling it off.” Frankly, to see Star Wars in 3-D is kinda cool, sure, but Lucas’ psychotic need to continual re-package his previous films has gone past the point of funny by now. And wasn’t he going to be spending the rest of his career making avant-garde,

Punisher: War Zone Review

4 December 2008 3:10 PM, PST

Punisher: War Zone is the worst of the three Punisher movies.  Nerds know that the Dolph Lundgren and Tom Jane movies suck balls, but what makes War Zone such a steaming pile of corn-filled waste is how it squanders some seriously “That’S Awesome” opportunities.  The promise of Titus Pullo going at it with Jimmy McNulty while Dexter’s girlfriend Rita danced around all hot and sexy had me amped up for months.  Punisher: War Zone was a cable television fanboy’s wet dream.  And like all wet dreams, at the end of War Zone you wake up alone, pissed off you didn’t really get the fantasy you dreamed of and ultimately you soiled yourself.  Uggh.

Frost/Nixon Review

4 December 2008 1:20 PM, PST

I don’t know about you, but nothing riles up my blood than thirty-year-old justice obstruction obfuscation!  And when that obfuscating is done by none other than the President of the United States, I want Answers!!!! Maybe it’s a little dickish of me to shrug off the Watergate Scandal like that, but breast-beating about an inconsequential break-in seems so naïve given what recent more recent political administrations have put us through.  Seems like now would be the worst time to resurrect the ghost of Nixon as a big bad wolf of Constitutional criminology. Ron Howard’s Frost/Nixon, however, is based on a very sharp play by Peter Morgan, who also wrote the “I can’t believe how edge of my seat this is” film The Queen from a few years back.  Frost/Nixon wisely positions itself less as an Oliver Stone-esque exercise in demonology than, surprisingly, a

They Live…to Make Remakes

4 December 2008 11:35 AM, PST

I’m rarely one of those guys who instantly poo-poos an idea.  But a remake of They Live?  That’s just a disaster. Word has spread that Summit Entertainment is in talks for the remake rights to John Carpenter’s cold war masterpiece.  Apart from being the best performance on film by a pro-wrestler, They Live is very much a thing of its time.  From the synthesizer music to the then-proliferation of cable television, there is a cyberpunk element to The Live that, in my opinion, should be left alone as a wonderful time capsule.  I mean - just take a look at those glasses! But if there Has to be a They Live remake, who should star?  Maybe this is an opportunity for Mickey Rourke to really get into character as a wrestler and put on the glasses, eh? Below - in case you missed it - is the They Live/South Park mash-up.

Sundance Film Festival Lineup

4 December 2008 1:02 AM, PST

Despite the war-weary, economically ravaged state of the nation and the industry, the Sundance Institute announced a generally upbeat 2009 competition lineup on Wednesday. While the offerings certainly include some somber fare, the roster breathes enough fresh takes on romance, sci-fi and politics to satisfy moviegoers and industry players looking for some warmth during the snowy 11-day event. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s how fest organizers Geoffrey Gilmore, Sundance’s longtime director, and John Cooper, its programming director, choose to see it. “What you might have expected is that the festival would be really reflective right now of a very dark time, and it’s not really true,” said Gilmore, in his 19th year overseeing the fest. “We haven’t seen the numbers drop, we haven’t seen productions severely impacted yet by these factors, and we really haven’t seen a darkness in terms of content. In fact,

Q&A With “Wonder Woman” Casting/Dialogue Director

4 December 2008 1:01 AM, PST

Andrea Romano, arguably the best known casting/dialogue director on the animation scene today, brings the voices of yet another DC Universe animated original film to life with “Wonder Woman.” Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation are set to release the all-new film on March 3, 2009, as distributed by Warner Home Video. The action-packed movie will also be available OnDemand and Pay-Per-View as well as available for download day and date, March 3, 2009. “Wonder Woman” is the fourth DC Universe film in the ongoing series, and Romano has returned - after the first three successful ventures - to cast and direct the likes of Keri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Alfred Molina, Virginia Madsen, Oliver Platt and Rosario Dawson. In an industry that once treated voiceovers with the anonymity of the witness protection plan, Romano has become a household name to legions of animation fans. Just name a show - “Animaniacs” or “Smurfs,

In this exclusive peek from The Dark Knight’s collection of DVD special features, we get a look at Gotham Tonight’s spotlight on controversial cop Jim Gordon. Moving Pictures: The Motion Picture

3 December 2008 4:52 PM, PST

So this movie Cadillac Records is coming out this weekend and I’m sure it is good and all....but when will these biopics end?  I’m so sick of biopics that I didn’t even want to see Walk Hard the movie for people who are sick of biopics.  It’s only a matter of time before news will creep down from the Great White North that the Film Board of Canada is backing the production of Moving Pictures: The Motion Picture a feature length look into the life and time of polyrhythmic nerds Rush. Casting is simple.  Guitarist Alex Lifeson will be played by Keifer Sutherland.  Drummer/Lyricist Neal Peart will be played by PBS talk show host Charlie Rose.  And Bass Player/Vocalist/Synthesizist Gary Lee Weinrib a/k/a Geddy Lee will be played by U2’s Bono crossed with Froot Loops’ Tucan Sam voiced by Sally Field.

Timecrimes Review

3 December 2008 2:54 PM, PST

There’s an easy trap out there for many of us, the desire to champion a low-budget or foreign film because we all like rooting for the underdog.  The Spanish sci-fi feature Timecrimes has been a darling of online critics since its debut at Sundance.  It will finally be released in theaters this weekend.  And while I enjoyed the film a great deal, I honestly wonder if there’d be this amount of hoopla if the picture, say, starred a yamhead like Val Kilmer and was set in New Jersey. Nacho Vigalongo’s feature (distributed by Magnet Releasing, currently enjoying much Sweedish Vampire success) is a head-trippy time travel story that, shockingly, manages to make the time travel elements make sense.  Anyone who has spent time agonizing over Primer or Memento can breathe a sigh of relief at this one.  What’s so annoying is that having cracked selling the

Cameron Puts Story First (And 3D A Close Second)

3 December 2008 3:01 AM, PST

FirstShowing.net caught James Cameron’s keynote presentation at the 3D Entertainment Summit where the director explained that “he went into Avatar with the goal of making a big blockbuster movie in 3D and hoped that there would be enough theaters to show it in. Since it took so long to make, that isn’t a concern anymore, Cameron joked. But it was more important for him to “think like a filmmaker” and not like an executive. “3D has to be content driven” was his most valuable message. While most of the industry is still experimenting in 3D, Cameron says that his “proof of concept” was the two documentaries that he and Vince Pace have made - Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep.” The site reports that Cameron also stated that “3D shouldn’t occupy the minds of filmmakers while they’re shooting, but should just be another item on the agenda,

Independent’s Spirit Award Nominations

3 December 2008 2:01 AM, PST

The Hollywood Reporter has the word that, with six nominations each, “Ballast,” a drama about survival in the Mississippi Delta, “Frozen River,” a portrait of two single moms on the Canadian border, and “Rachel Getting Married,” the account of a dysfunctional family wedding, led the nominees for Film Independent’s Spirit Awards. All three films were nominated for best feature along “Wendy and Lucy” and “The Wrestler.” Charlie Kaufman’s “Synecdoche, New York,” a twisty, M.C. Escher-like film, was singled out as the winner of the group’s Robert Altman Award, give to one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. Kaufman will share the award with casting director Jeanne McCarthy and his actors Hope Davis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Catherine Keener, Samantha Morton, Tom Noonan, Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest, and Michelle Williams when the Spirit Awards are handed out Feb. 21.

Delgo Is Coming

3 December 2008 1:01 AM, PST

Is it wrong that I’m looking forward to this?  “Experience peace and goodwill this holiday season with the fantasy action-adventure Delgo, debuting in theaters nationwide December 12 from Fathom Studios.  Starring award-winning actress Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., this enchanted family film is a timeless story set in the magical land of Jhamora.” ...See?  As the description says, it’s set in the magical land of Jhamora.  I’ve always wanted to see a movie take place in a magical land called Jhamora!  It’s here! “With non-stop action and exciting characters, including a deliciously wicked villain, a beautiful winged-princess, an all-to-eager teenager, his bumbling sidekick friend, and a legion of bizarre monsters and winged creatures, Delgo is a fun film for every member of the family.” ...I happen to be a member of my family - so this works out awesome for me! That, combined with the voices of Val Kilmer,

Sukiyaki Western Django DVD Review

2 December 2008 3:12 PM, PST

The “High Concept Western” has an interesting place in the movie lexicon. Everyone wants to make them, no one wants to see them. But Sukiyaki Western Django is no Bad Girls (all girl western) or Terror of Tinytown (all midget western) or even Young Guns (all idiot western) This is Takashi Miike’s (Ichi the Killer) All Japanese Western, and it won’t get seen in the Us that much either, but it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. It’s a lot of fun.

I Was a Centaur in Narnia

2 December 2008 2:43 PM, PST

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian comes out on DVD and Blu-ray today and I recently got a chance to experience the film’s creature effects first hand.  I actually got to become one!  I travelled to the Knb Efx studio, which did the makeup effects and there I was transformed into a centaur.  They’ve done the makeup/effects work for films like Grindhouse, Spy Kids and Masters of Horror.  I had glue in my hair for days and I freaked out more than a few people, but it was an incredible experience.  Once upon a time I worked as a makeup artist, but I’ve never gotten a chance to sit in the chair myself.  I have a new respect for what the actors go through on a daily basis. The “before” picture They put me in the chair, draped me in the hairdresser cape, and took the “before” picture.

17 Again Trailer

2 December 2008 2:01 PM, PST

A good premise never dies.  Call it Like Father, Like Son call it Freaky Friday or call it (shockingly) 18 Again, seeing an old dude go back and be young again must really connect with the emotionally stunted producers in Hollywood.  Next spring we’ll see Zac Efron as the younger version of Matthew Perry in 17 Again.  For those of you who need a peek now now now, we offer the trailer.

Forbidden Planet - a Sidequel?

2 December 2008 1:00 PM, PST

J. Michael Straczynski’s forthcoming Forbidden Planet is neither a remake or a reimaging or a prequel, he tells MTV News.  What it is, he won’t precisely say, although he is quick to point out he has a lot of top Artificial Intelligence experts at his beck and call for consultation.  ‘Cause that’s what makes excitement - the specificity of the scientific community. I’ve got a bug up my arse about Jms simply because he likes to go around saying that Deep Space Nine was ripped off from Babylon 5.  I dare you to look Captain Sisko in the eye and say that.  The recently released Changeling, which he wrote, may strangely give him more clout if it gets a lot of awards nominations, even though most people who’ve seen the flick thought it was no good. The original Forbidden Planet is a remarkable piece of
