We just got word from the folks at 20th Century Fox that the trailer for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie will be released next week. Ethan Hawke Talks About Joining the Horror Genre With Daybreakers
20 hours ago
Ethan Hawke is not the typical choice for a horror movie actor, and the upcoming Daybreakers is accordingly his first picture in the genre. Hawke explained to ShockTillYouDrop why he decided to appear in a vampire movie.
I wanted to do something I hadn't done. My first movie [Explorers] was with Joe Dante and all he'd talk about with Roger Corman, and those kinds of pictures like The Howling and Piranha, those are his first — he'd talk passionately about the power of genre filmmaking and what it can be. I have some base awareness of it, but I fancy myself a dramatic actor and I had finished Tom Stoppard's [play] The Coast of Utopia, which is nine hours about mid-19th century Russian radicals, and [Daybreakers], a vampire movie, sounded like a lot of fun.
Despite the current vampire craze, Hawke says Daybreakers will add something "new" to the genre.

Marvel President Describes Thor Screen Test
20 hours ago
Marvel Entertainment President Kevin Feige recently posted some memories from working on comic book movies for over 10 years on Marvel.com and, understandably, Feige concluded his thoughts by telling about his excitement over a screen test of Thor, which is heading into production in mid-January.
To be honest the thing that I'm most excited about right now, though, is the screen test we just finished for Thor. We've done some costume tests and watching the Asgardians walk onto the sound stage takes me back to that first time I saw the X-Men on the set all together in Toronto. Only it was unlike anything we've ever put on film before! It's great to be starting the next decade in such an exciting way just as we did last decade. We're really redefining the comic book genre and what a Marvel movie can be. It's going to be great.

The 10 Breakout Stars of 2010
Looking back at our first-annual "Breakout Stars" predictions (2009), we hit only about .300. Chris Pine, Channing Tatum, and 3-D were hits. Jody Hill, Saoirse Ronan, and Rian Johnson were misses, as was Ayelet Zurer, the Israeli stunner who we thought would finally catch on with American audiences as Tom Hanks' co-star in Angels and Demons. Damn.
This year we're looking to improve our batting average with these 10 new predictions &mdash and we didn't even include Rosamund Pike, who looks to be darn near a sure thing with four movies set for release in 2010. Check out our list of The 10 Breakout Stars of 2010.

Non-Stop Action in New Trailer for From Paris with Love
21 hours ago
Wisecracking and borderline crazy FBI agent Charlie Wax (John Travolta) has ostensibly come to France in pursuit of terrorists in Pierre Morel's From Paris with Love. But from what we see in the new trailer, what really gets him going is all the opportunities the mission gives him to shoot big guns and kick ass. He's having way too much fun to be Jack Bauer, but he certainly shares the 24 star's lack of limits ... and Paris may need some repair work after he's done.
The action sequences here are nicely choreographed, showing off the bent for the genre that director Morel honed in Taken. If the movie ends up anything like this trailer suggests, it should be a fun ride.

Taylor Swift Supergirl Rumor Debunked
The news that pop country singer-songwriter Taylor Swift might be up for the role of Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman, in a planned Supergirl movie seemed pretty far-fetched when it was first reported by Ireland On-Line. It seemed an especially strange move for DC Entertainment since company head Diane Nelson had said they did not have "any current plans" for another Superman movie.
Apparently, the news was as outlandish as it sounded. A DC Comics spokesperson was recently asked by Scotland's Sunday Mail if Swift would be donning the classic red-and-blue tights in a live-action movie and the unidentified rep scoffed at the rumor.
That's as clueless a thing as we've heard all year.
Sorry, comic book movie fans. If you're just itching to see Supergirl in live action, you can always hope for a return of Laura Vandervoort as Supergirl on TV's Smallville.

Expanding the Avatar Universe
With a box-office take of $1.025 billion and climbing, James Cameron's Avatar has already surpassed The Dark Knight to become the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time and it is quickly closing in on the number three movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. In all likelihood, Avatar will also end up surpassing The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, giving Cameron the top two movies on the list.
Before Avatar was released, Cameron said that he didn't want to talk about sequel plans until he saw the box-office numbers, but after the movie grossed more than $600 million in 10 days, he admitted that there was plenty of source material for a possible future story. What he didn't say was if he was referring to a movie sequel or some other form of story, such as a novel or comic book set in the Avatar universe he created. »

Dune Finds a New Director
One reason Dune keeps getting remade is that the original novel offers up one of the most richly imagined worlds in science fiction with lots of room for the director to give the story his own spin.
David Lynch's ill-fated 1984 adaptation was a mixed bag that ended up pleasing neither the critics nor even the director, himself. The 2000 miniseries adaptation was more faithful to the original and got a bit better reception, picking up a couple of Emmys.
The latest version was originally to be directed by Peter Berg, but he abandoned ship in October. Now Taken director Pierre Morel is taking the helm, promising to make "a very faithful adaptation." The first draft of the script was penned by Quantum of Solace's Josh Zetumer and had already picked up some pretty positive buzz, but the studio says it's looking around for a new writer to help infuse »

National Society of Film Critics Picks The Hurt Locker; Does That Hurt Its Oscar Chances?
The Hurt Locker was the big winner when the National Society of Film Critics announced their awards for the movies of 2009. The Iraq War drama took home Best Picture, Best Director for Kathryn Bigelow, and Best Actor for Jeremy Renner, who plays a soldier addicted to the adrenaline rush of disarming landmines.
If history is any indication, this may be bad news for the movie's Oscar chances. In 40-plus years, the only movies that have ever won Best Picture from both the Nsfc and the Academy are Annie Hall, Unforgiven, Schindler's List, and Million Dollar Baby. The match-up is better, however, for the director and actor categories, so Bigelow and Renner may be soild contenders when the Oscar nominations are announced on February 2.
The Best Actress award went to Yolande Moreau for her performance as French artist Séraphine Louis in the biopic Seraphine. Christoph Waltz and Paul Schneider split the »

Ethan Hawke on a Before Sunset Sequel
5 January 2010 1:09 AM, PST
When Before Sunrise was released in 1995, it enjoyed a modest success in theaters that grew when it was released on video and DVD and ultimately inspired a sequel, Before Sunset, in 2004. Sunset enjoyed larger box-office success, prompting even more sequel talk. Ethan Hawke told Collider that after making Sunset "there was not a doubt in the three of our minds [Hawke, co-star Julie Delpy, and co-writer/director Richard Linklater] that we would do it again" and discussed what it would take to make a third movie.
The success of the second film has made it a little difficult to see our way around how to do it. Because the first time we revisited it there was no expectation. I remember when it first came out that Before Sunset was going to be released, I remember reading some article "They must believe in themselves because why would they?" I mean there was no expectation on it. And now every time »

Iron Man Writer Discuses the Origins of War Machine
4 January 2010 8:42 AM, PST
Movie audiences were introduced to the character of Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes in Iron Man and, as the recent trailer revealed, will meet War Machine, the hero Rhodey becomes, in Iron Man 2. Comic book fans, however, were enticed by Rhodey's prophetic declaration of "next time" in Iron Man, having been aware of the character for decades.
In an interview with MTV, Bob Layton, the co-creator of the comic character, talked about Rhodey's origins.
Part of the problem was that Tony Stark never had a best friend. He didn't have anyone who he could confide in and share his point of view. We wanted to create someone who was a counterpart to him who didn't have superpowers and wasn't just an employee — somebody that he had a personal relationship with. We felt he needed a human foil there. It was never our intention for him to take over as Iron Man. »

The Road Director's Next Project Is Dead
4 January 2010 8:40 AM, PST
Some depressing news regarding the next project from Australian director John Hillcoat, who helmed The Road and The Proposition. Writing in a diary he kept for The Telegraph, Hillcoat confirmed that his next project is now kaput.
The Promised Land was written by Nick Cave, who adapted the screenplay from Matt Bondurant's novel The Wettest County in the World. The story looks at a family of thieves and smugglers in Virginia during the Great Depression and is based in part on the experiences of Bondurant's family.
The project has had Shia Labeouf, Ryan Gosling, Michael Shannon, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Dano, and Amy Adams all rumored as possible cast members.
The demise of Millenium Films is in large part responsible for The Promised Land's premature ending, and in the diary, Hillcoat expressed deep regret and pessimism, not only for his project, but for the fate of all quality smaller productions. »

The Orphanage Remake Gets a Director
4 January 2010 8:30 AM, PST
When American movie studios discover an effective foreign horror movie, their first instinct is to schedule a remake. Such is the case with the creepy Spanish horror movie The Orphanage, directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and produced by Guillermo Del Toro, which followed a woman who takes over the orphanage where she was raised to find that the same imaginary friend who terrorized her as a child is now friends with her son.
Variety reports that the remake has found a director in Mark Pellington (Arlington Road and The Mothman Prophecies). Del Toro is clearly interested in seeing a decent remake — he's serving as producer and co-writing the script with Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter).

The Thing Prequel to Start Shooting in March
4 January 2010 8:04 AM, PST
A prequel to John Carpenter's classic horror movie The Thing will head into production in March. Production Weekly announced the shoot date on its Twitter page.
Universal's prequel to John Carpenter's classic thriller The Thing, is due to begin filming March and continue till June in Toronto.
Newcomer director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. will work from a script by Ronald D. Moore (creator of the rebooted Battlestar Galactica series) and Eric Heisserer (A Nightmare on Elm Street). The prequel is supposed to deal with the events before Carpenter's movie, which likely means it involves the initial Norwegian team that unearths the alien (that ultimately terrorizes Kurt Russell and the rest of the scientists of the Anatarctic outpost). No release date for the prequel has been announced.

Michael Cera Finally Getting Some Action in Scott Pilgrim vs The World
4 January 2010 6:11 AM, PST
Visualizing Hollywood's hottest nerd actor Michael Cera as an action hero is a difficult proposition, but that is exactly what we'll get to see in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Cera's character in the movie must defeat the seven evil ex-boyfriends of his new girlfriend to win her heart.
Those who have seen bits of it already have praised its action scenes, and now Cera himself has given his own assessment in a recent interview with Collider.
There's an amazing fight between Mae Whitman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead where they're using these weapons, and it's really amazingly done. And, there are some other things, like battles with music in it and the sword fighting. There's all sorts of different things.
Cera dropped some other suprising news in the interview, namely that there will be no development of the franchise past the first movie. When asked about potential sequels, he said, »

The Western Gets Religion and Mad Samurai Skills in The Book of Eli
4 January 2010 1:53 AM, PST
Moviemakers have repeatedly insisted that The Book of Eli, despite its setting, is not a Western. Sure it's all about a showdown in a small Western town between a mysterious stranger and the the local powers that be. But, as they pointed out in a recent group interview with Sci Fi Wire, there are some significant departures from the genre classics.
First of all it's set in a bleak, post-apocalyptic future. And then there's the religious angle that has been highlighted in the movie's recent poster campaign. Eli is on a quest to deliver a book with a key to the salvation of what's left of humanity to its rightful place. As Denzel Washington, who plays Eli, puts it, the movie is essentially
a classic battle between God and the devil, or even more specifically for the character of [Eli], I mean, he's five days' walk from the Promised Land, if you will, »

Oren Peli Thanks the Fans for the Success of Paranormal Activity
4 January 2010 1:25 AM, PST
The incredible success of Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity has nearly as much to do with the support of its fans as it does with Peli's relentless determination to get the movie into distribution, a fact that is not lost on the first-time director.
Made for only $15,000, Paranormal Activity premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival on October 14, 2007, but languished for nearly two years before Paramount Pictures decided to release the movie in 13 college towns. Based on the box-office numbers from those viewings, and from the nearly 1.3 million people who used eventful.com to "Demand it!" show in their area, the movie finally got a nationwide release on October 16, 2009.
To show his gratitude, Peli recently sent a thank-you letter to the fans via MTV.com.
To our Paranormal Activity fans,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your incredible support now that Paranormal Activity is out on DVD and Blu-ray. »

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil Trailer
4 January 2010 12:51 AM, PST
An interesting twist on the stereotypical, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil takes a shot at the overdone "sexy college kids go camping and get murdered" scenario. The comedy-horror will be one of the indie offerings at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, this month.
Starring as peace-loving and non-violent hillbillies, Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine take a trip to their dilapidated mountain cabin, but their vacation goes horribly awry when some skittish college kids arrive and "start killing themselves all over the woods."
Tucker & Dale vs Evil does not have a U.S .distributor yet, but will surely find one at Sundance.
