"The Thing" Prequel Thaws In March

Pre-production is slated to kick off in March on Universal Pictures' prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic "The Thing" reports Production Weekly. The story will deal with the initial dredging up out of the ice of the shape-shifting alien life form by researchers at a Norwegian Antarctic facility. Matthijs Van Hejningen helms the new film from a script by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer. Shooting runs from March till June in Toronto. »

Pellington to Direct "Orphanage" Remake

New Line/Warner Bros. has hired Mark Pellington to direct the English-language remake of "The Orphanage". Guillermo del Toro and ContraFilm's Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson will produce the redo of the Juan Antonio Bayona-directed Spanish film. Larry Fessenden and Del Toro wrote the script for the new version. The original centers on Laura (Belén Rueda) who purchases her beloved childhood orphanage with dreams of restoring and reopening the long abandoned facility as a place for disabled children. Once there, Laura discovers that the new environment awakens her son's imagination, but the ongoing fantasy games he plays with an invisible friend quickly turn into something more disturbing. Pierre Morel Takes Over "Dune" Remake

"Taken" director Pierre Morel is set to take over the directing reigns of the "Dune" remake at Paramount Pictures reports Entertainment Weekly. Peter Berg ("Hancock") was originally attached to direct but dropped off the project in October. A new scribe will now be hired to incorporate Morel's vision of the project into the current script by Josh Zetumer ("Quantum Of Solace") which is expected to be a very faithful adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1965 sci-fi novel classic. Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing. »
