The Sound of Fright Night: An Interview with David Chackler
1 hour ago
A few weeks ago I peeled open my rib cage to reveal my raw, beating heart and the sound of that heart was (to the tune of “thump-thump, thump-thump”) : Fright-night, Fright-night, Fright….
Yeah, I worship writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire gem and I fly that fanged flag with pride.
But outside of the ace performances from Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, outside of Holland’s sharp, affectionate script and tense – yet playful – direction and outside of Richard Edlund’s gorgeous special effects, one of the major hooks that Fright Night jabbed into me was the soundtrack, a sexy, atmospheric synth score by Brad Fiedel and a motley collection of 80’s pop and metal tunes that fit the material perfectly, almost as if they were written specifically for the action on screen.
Well, it turns out for the most part, they were.
See, shortly after I published »

Oh Yeah! Haunt Me Morella!
You ever have one of those nights you can’t sleep? So you go down to the living room, turn off all the lights, make sure no one is home, and “accidentally” turn on Cinemax? If you’ve done so, then you know about the cavalcade of skin that takes over the late night airwaves, especially during the late 80’s and early 90’s. Many of these films stay with us, occupying a special place in the back of our minds. We know they’re there; we just would never admit seeing them to anyone else.
While doing my weekly foraging at the Goodwill searching the VHS rack looking for rare horror titles, I stumbled upon a memory. I exclaimed aloud, “Holy shit! The Haunting Of Morella! Where have I seen that before?” I glanced over at my fellow horror comrades and saw the look of shame in the eyes of »

Snoop Dogg's Malice N Wonderland gets cinematic
2 hours ago
Next Tuesday, Snoop Dogg will unleash his latest studio effort when Malice N Wonderland hits the streets. Marking his return to Priority Records, Malice is Snoop's first album of all-original material since 2008's Ego Trippin, and is a return to some familiar territory, steeped within a story-driven concept. No stranger to genre fare with Bones and Snoop Dogg's Hood Of Horror to his credit, the new album finds the rapper taking on the role of Malice, which Rolling Stone describes as a "Batman-with-corn rows character who attempts to reassemble his old crew of troublemakers to help overthrow the dictator of Wonderland". Fangoria Musick has the trailer for the "mini movie" (set for a 2010 release) below, along with the first music video "I Want to Rock."
The entire Malice N Wonderland album is now up for streaming on Snoop's MySpace page, and you can pre-order the album by clicking here. »

Paul Naschy 1934 – 2009
Spanish horror legend dies.
Jacinto Molina Álvarez, better known worldwide as Paul Naschy, died at his Madrid home Tuesday morning following a year long battle with cancer. The actor, writer, producer and director publicly played down the extent of his ill health, attributing his appearance in a wheelchair at last October’s Sitges Festival to mere fatigue after a long journey and few people were aware of the gravity of his illness. I last talked to Paul three weeks ago and he spoke as enthusiastically as ever about the numerous projects he had on the go: sound editing on the vampire movie Empusa which he directed, the completion of the script for a wartime horror thriller titled Groton El Grande and his pet project, Mi Perro Aquiles, for which he had secured the services of Christopher Lee in the role of Don Quijote.

Trinity of Terrors: Meet Mister Sam Shearon
16 hours ago
One of the coolest things about Fangoria's 30th anniversary Trinity Of Terrors in Las Vegas was an impressive poster depicting every guest of the blood-soaked weekend. Besides classic covers and various personalities including Slipknot, there were various monsters and creatures. It also served as the cover of the event's program.
That central image was created by talented British artist, Sam Shearon. The illustrator sat down to discuss his work for Fangoria and his other horrifying imagery. The cheerful bearded Brit talks about his influences and inspirations.
Pat Jankiewicz: How did you come up with the impressive painting for Trinity of Terrors?
Sam Shearon: Initially Scott Licina asked whether I'd be interested in creating a peice of dark-art for the front cover for the official programme to the event. It would be printed up as a limited edition comic sized souvenir to the Halloween weekend at the Palms to celebrate »

Bsb: Jacinto Molina, Paul Naschy, Waldemar Daninsky....no more.
I have just learned the news: one of my heroes, Jacinto Molina aka Paul Naschy has passed away.
I was hoping to meet this man before he died, hoped to tell him how much his dearnged and beautiful gothic horror films and unique screen presence meant to me all these years...but alas, never to be.
So here then, in tribute and from my vaults, is my love letter to one of my favorite Naschy romps, The Werewolf Vs. The Vampire Woman.
Rest in Piece, Jacinto...I'll keep carrying your fur faced fire.

I was a teenage Frankenhooker!
With her pale blue eyes and long blonde (sometimes black) hair, striking Kathleen Gati is one of Hollywood's busiest character actresses. From her ruthless slaver in Trade to Desperate Housewives, Gati really gets around.
You've heard her sultry voice in The Devil's Rejects and seen her protect Jack Bauer as Anya Suvarov the first lady of Russia on "24".(She even lets the gun-toting hero storm the Russian Embassy!) So what is the polished, beautiful actress doing in Frankenhooker?!?
Frankenhooker, the notorious New York horror/comedy from twisted Big Apple filmmaker Frank Henenlotter (Basket Case), is a loose re-telling of the Mary Shelley classic. A failed med student vows to re-build his dismembered girlfriend out of Times Square prostitutes.(This is before Disney and Broadway teamed up to clean up Times Square!) When he goes trolling for tramps, the lovely Gati is one of his first targets.
"Ohhh, Frankenhooker," giggles Kathleen Gati. »

Colorado's Allegaeon (pronounced: uh-lee-juhn) has joined forces with Metal Blade Records! Formed in early-summer 2008, with the release of their self-titled Ep immediately following, Allegaeon has quickly spread their brand extreme metal locally, nationally and internationally, with many accolades from fans. Gay Of The Dead #29 - Socket’s Alexandra Billings
1 December 2009 2:29 AM, PST
December 1 is World AIDS Day, and I have the pleasure of knowing someone HIV+ who is both connected to the horror/sci-fi world and a huge fan, actress Alexandra Billings.
I met Alexandra ages and ages ago, right around when someone invented fire. We were both eyeballs deep in the Chicago theater community, doing show after show, sometimes two or even three different plays a night, with the energy only a 20-something possesses. We worked together, became friends, and eventually both moved to La around the same time. You can read a fairly detailed account of her Chicago days (through my eyes) including a lot of info about her transgender journey in my other blog here: http://zombietruckstop.livejournal.com/2006/12/01/ - and of course on her own website.
After so much theater, Alexandra now swims around the Los Angeles on-camera, TV and film pool, slowly but surely convincing forward-thinking casting »

Obituary to release Live Xecution Party DVD
30 November 2009 3:35 PM, PST
Beginning their career as Xecutioner in 1984, Obituary remains one of the most influential and groundbreaking bands in the death metal genre they inadvertently helped forge. Hailing from the sunny state of Florida, the band's decidedly un-sunny take on metal integrated devastatingly slow, lead-footed riffing with obliterating overtures and guttural screams; the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. It was a sound unlike anything anyone had heard prior. Engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio (which would consequently become one of the most sought after production facilities during the death metal surge of the '90s), Obituary's Slowly We Rot debut remains a pinnacle release among all walks of metal; a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike. After eight full-length albums and several smaller releases the band remains one of the most important death metal bands in the world. »

Limp Bizkit reveal new album title...
30 November 2009 1:17 PM, PST
As the 90's resurgence continues, cautious eyes and ears have been pointed at the Limp Bizkit camp for the past year. After reuniting the original Bizkit lineup, the band has made several appearances throughout Europe playing club shows and festivals, most notably Rock Am Ring, and June's Download Fest in the UK (video below).
For awhile things have been quiet, but the silence has been broken by Fred Durst as he revealed the title for the new album exclusively to Kerrang! Magazine prior to a posting on the band's Twitter page.
"We thought we'd tell Kerrang! before everyone," says Durst. "I'm ready to make this post on Twitter but I figured I'd call you guys first.
"The name of the new Limp Bizkit album is Gold Cobra," he continues. "We will slowly be revealing the meaning of the title over the next few weeks. Cobras are quite venomous. I wish it were a much longer, »

Terror Tidbits (Fango #289): What’s Scary?
30 November 2009 1:06 PM, PST
All my life I’ve been going to see scary movies, beginning with 1950s black-and-white monsterfests like The Black Scorpion and Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers (where the alien invaders look very much like the prawns in District 9), and although much has changed in my life since the days when it cost a quarter to get in and the butter on the popcorn was real, I find myself asking the same three questions.
First, why do so many so-called horror movies, even those with big budgets (maybe especially those with big budgets) not work? Second, why do genre fans such as myself so often go in with high hopes and come out feeling unsatisfied…and, worse, unscared? Third, and most important, why is it that others—sometimes those most unheralded others, with teensy budgets and unknown, untried actors—do work, surprising us with terror and amazement?
Oh, and here »
