Salvage filmmaker plans a Drought
According to The Hollywood Reporter, British filmmaker Lawrence Gough, who currently has Salvage (pictured) doing the festival circuit, will next direct Drought for The Works International and Mann Made Films. The movie is an ecological action/horror story in the vein of John Hillcoat’s upcoming Cormac McCarthy adaptation The Road.
The screenplay by Colin O’Donnell, who also scripted Salvage, focuses on a couple with a sick daughter struggling to survive in a world depleted of water. Having survived as long as possible in their suburban home, they set out on a trek to London, plunging them into a bloody fight for their lives. Currently being presold at the American Film Market, Drought is scheduled to start filming next summer, with the budget contingent on casting. Salvage, which won the Trailblazer Award at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival and has also screened at Austin, TX’s Fantastic Fest and London’s Film4 Frightfest, »

DVD horror news #1: Pontypool, Hard Revenge Milly, Lost Skeleton, etc.
• IFC Films and Mpi Media Group gave Fango the first look at cover art for their DVD release of Pontypool (pictured), the acclaimed and unusual zombie thriller starring Stephen McHattie. Also coming this winter from the two companies is another well-received genre film, the Argentinean ghost story The Appeared.
Directed by Bruce McDonald and scripted by Tony Burgess from his book, Pontypool (streeting January 26; see our review here) casts McHattie as a shock jock who, one cold early winter morning, starts receiving mysterious reports from outside about violent and frightening acts committed by the local townspeople. It turns out that they’re infected with a spreading plague that is transmitted via speech and turns them into bloodthirsty killers. In The Appeared (a.k.a. Aparecidos, out January 12), writer/director Paco Cabezas spins the tale of a brother and sister who discover a diary documenting horrific murder and torture 20 years before. »

Robin Hardy Grows The Wicker Tree
6 November 2009 8:34 AM, PST
Last Friday at New York City’s 92YTribeca, fans of Robin Hardy’s 1973 British horror classic The Wicker Man got a special treat. Not only was a 35mm print of the movie screened with Hardy in attendance, but the director unveiled 10 minutes of clips from his latest feature The Wicker Tree (formerly known as Cowboys For Christ). Fango got a chance to speak with Hardy exclusively about the new project, which was partially encouraged by the misbegotten 2006 remake of The Wicker Man starring Nicolas Cage.
“It had been in my mind to do another movie,” Hardy says, “and when they made the Nicolas Cage version, I thought they missed the point of the first film completely. I say point, but I mean points, really. They just used the plot and threw away all the atmosphere and charm, the things which lulled you into a sense of this being a marvelous, »

More special screenings of new fear fare
6 November 2009 8:20 AM, PST
Halloween is over, but the horror-film screenings continue. A quartet of genre features that have yet to achieve general distribution will be shown this month on opposite coasts, all with special guests on hand.
Tonight at midnight (actually 11:55 p.m.) at Los Angeles’ New Beverly Cinema (7165 Beverly Boulevard), the Grindhouse Film Festival presents a special showing of Lee Damarbre’s Smash Cut, about a horror filmmaker (played by the original Last House On The Left’s David Hess) who uses real body parts in his screen shockers. Inspired by the films of Herschell Gordon Lewis (who has an onscreen role, along with his The Wizard Of Gore star Ray Sager), the movie also features adult-film star Sasha Grey, Jesse Buck and Fango fave Michael Berryman. Demarbre and Hess will introduce the Grindhouse showing—Smash Cut’s only big-screen engagement in La—and take part in a Q&A afterward. »

Herzog and Lynch’s My Son snags theatrical release
6 November 2009 7:35 AM, PST
Absurda and Industrial Entertainment have announced that their film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done has set a debut theatrical-release date. The movie marks the first collaboration between cinematic mavericks Werner Herzog and David Lynch, who directed and executive-produced respectively.
My Son, My Son will open Friday, December 11 at New York City’s IFC Center (323 6th Avenue), with playdates in other cities to follow. Though word from early screenings is that it’s not really a horror film, it does deal with rather twisted subject matter—a man (Bug’s Michael Shannon) who murders his mother with a sword while acting out a Sophocles play—and features a genre-centric cast including Antichrist’s Willem Dafoe, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny, Udo Kier (who discussed the movie with us here) and Brad Dourif. You can see the movie’s official website, with a trailer and more photos, here.

The Box (Film Review)
6 November 2009 4:22 AM, PST
To answer the most obvious question right away: No, sadly, Richard Kelly’s The Box is not a return to the absorbingly strange glories of his knockout debut feature Donnie Darko. But nor is it as frustratingly out of control as his follow-up film Southland Tales either. In fact, it’s kind of a combination of both: opening and closing reels of compelling and dark personal drama surrounding more expansive, elaborate plotting that loses its grip.
Based on Richard Matheson’s 1970 short story “Button, Button,” The Box relocates the action to Virginia in 1976, where Arthur Lewis (James Marsden) is a Nasa technician and his wife Norma (Cameron Diaz, with a fetching drawl) teaches at the private school attended by their preteen son Walter (Sam Oz Stone). They’re a loving couple, and Arthur is even taking advantage of his skills and facility to create a prosthesis for Norma’s disfigured »

Ringu’s Nakata finds his English-language Voice
6 November 2009 3:10 AM, PST
Variety reports that Hideo Nakata, who helmed the Japanese Ringu chillers among others as well as the American The Ring Two, will direct Voice From The Stone for Zanuck Independent. The project is based on the Italian cult novel La Voce Della Pietra by Silvio Raffo.
The story concerns a female psychologist treating a young boy who has vowed to remain silent until his deceased mother’s spirit returns—and discovers that the mother’s ghost intends to use her body as the vessel to live again and be reunited with her child. Former Fango contributor Mark Wheaton, whose credits include The Messengers and the Friday The 13th remake, wrote the script. Shooting will take place next spring/summer for producers Dean Zanuck, Stefano Gallini-Durante, Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur. »

The Fourth Kind (Mike's Film Review)
5 November 2009 4:56 PM, PST
The trick to making a successful vérité horror film, especially in this post-blair Witch age of audience skepticism, is not forcing the issue that the events on screen are real. The makers of The Fourth Kind have geared their campaign toward encouraging viewers to make up their own minds, but the more the movie itself insists—frequently and blatantly—that it’s authentic, the harder it is to buy any of it, undercutting a number of genuinely creepy sequences.
The movie lays it on thick right away as star Milla Jovovich addresses us directly, telling us that what we’re about to witness is all based on true case histories, followed by, “Please be advised that some of what you’re about to see is extremely disturbing.” (To which the more cynical onlookers might well reply, “We’ll be the judge of that.”) Subsequent plane’s-eye views approaching the central setting of Nome, »

Updates on Robert Rodriguez’s Predators
5 November 2009 4:50 PM, PST
The original Predator inspired more American Film Market-screened knockoffs than just about any other movie, and the word on the street here at the sales event is that the upcoming Robert Rodriguez production Predators will also jumpstart a whole new stream of human-vs.-aliens movies. And those who gotten a look at the Predators screenplay have been raving.
These sources tell Fango that this sequel ignores Predator 2 as well as both Alien Vs. Predator movies, and is a direct sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starrer. The script, by Michael Finch, Alex Litvak and Rodriguez, not only takes place on Earth, but its human characters also travel to the Predators’ planet to hunt the extraterrestrials. We will see new species—including Predator dogs!—and there’s going to be a Berserker Predator, the meanest badass of them all. And in some surprising FX news, Knb Efx’s Howard Berger and »

A couple of new SHARKs from Roger Corman
5 November 2009 4:47 PM, PST
Roger Corman (a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award at our recent Trinity of Terrors) is a mainstay of the American Film Market and always has been, and that’s where we caught up again with the veteran producer, who’s doing a couple of new killer-fish movies for the Syfy channel. “Dinocroc was a big hit for us,” he tells Fango, “and Syfy wanted another one, so now we have Dinoshark, which we shot in Mexico, and that has turned out so well, the next one we’ll do for them is…
“Octoshark!” No doubt this flick is about a crossbreed between the two sea species, though we’d like to think it concerns a great white trying to raise too many offspring and becoming a media sensation. In any case, Dinoshark was directed by Kevin O’Neill (who also helmed Dinocroc) from a script by Frances Doel and »
