MacGruber Test Screening Review: “Best SNL Film Since Wayne’s World”
Amir Bednarsh was given the opportunity to see an early screening of MacGruber, and posted an early test screening review on The Vertex. It should be noted that this is not a review of the final film, but thoughts on an early cut of the movie (sans final effects, edits, music...etc). Basically, everything could change. I have included a few excerpts from the review below, minus spoilers: I was wary that it would follow in the path of prior Saturday Night Live films. Most sketch concepts generally flourish when they’re just that - sketches. A full-length comedy falls into the trap of relying on the same old recycled jokes to the point where you not only loathe the film, but you retroactively dislike the sketches they were based on. You might not believe me when I tell you this, but there’s no doubt: MacGruber was amazing. ... Unlike other comedies, »

Cool Stuff: New Era Japan’s 59Fifty fitted Star Wars Caps
2 hours ago
New Era Japan have announced a collaboration with LucasFilm, in releasing a new line of 59Fifty fitted Star Wars caps. Included below is a preview of only some of the first wave, showing us a variety of designs, including character heads, iconic scenes, and logos. But are these cool... or just silly? I think I like the Han Solo in Carbonite black cap pictured above as it isn't too flashy. The caps sell for around 7,000 yen, which is somewhere around $80 Usd. Check out more photos after the jump. Sundance Photo Preview: Skateland starring Ashley Greene
3 hours ago
Anthony Burns makes his feature film directorial debut with Skateland, which premieres at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival as one of the 16 films which were selected from 1,058 submissions for the U.S. Dramatic competition. Skateland is a coming-of-age story which takes place in the early 1980s in small-town East Texas. Dramatic events force a 19-year-old skating rink manager named Ritchie (played by Deadgirl's Shiloh Fernandez) to look at his life in a very new way. Ritchie is on the verge of having his life change when the skate park he works at closes down and with it his carefree life of hanging with his friends. With responsibilities suddenly thrust upon him, he spends the rest of the summer transitioning into an adult. “Where he worked at represents a dying age,” Burns explains. “Skateboarding is becoming popular, East Texas is big in exporting energy and industrial chemicals, so there’s a »

Casting Notes: Elijah Wood, Andrea Savage, Hobbit Begins Casting This Week
4 hours ago
George Miller may have a new Mad Max movie brewing, but before that happens he's got to finish a film that is the polar opposite of the action sequel: Happy Feet 2. (I guess it's kind of an action sequel, too.) Elijah Wood and Robin Williams are returning to the roles they voiced in the original film (Mumble and Ramon, respectively) and will do the voice work in Australia early next year. Miller again wrote the script; hopefully he gets all the dancing out of his system before making Mad Max. Actually, scratch that. I think Max could probably cut a mean rug. [THR] After the break, Andrea Savage has dinner with schmucks, and the latest on The Hobbit. Dinner for Schmucks, the Jay Roach-directed remake of French film Le Diner de Cons, already has some great cast members. Zach Galifianakis, Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are all at the table. »

Mystery Team Extends NYC Run, Demand It!
Derrick Comedy's feature film debut Mystery Team had the fourth-highest per screen average this past weekend, a period during which they were the second-most Demanded thing on Eventful. Demand the film come to your city. I've been told that they're trying to respond to those demands in as timely a fashion as their schedule and budget will allow. The film's New York City run has been extended through next week (showtimes), and they will have a special limited engagement this Friday and Saturday night at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, Nm. Several more cities will be announced soon. Derrick will be in New York doing Q&As every night, and handing out swords to people who see the movie twice, until the end of the run. This morning we received a very nice e-mail from Derrick, which they said we could share with you, our readers. You can read that »

Redbox $1 DVD Rentals Cost Hollywood $1 Billion? But How Many Discs Does Redbox Buy at Retail?
A new study has been published by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp that claims the one-dollar DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks have cost Hollywood one billion dollars, and that the economic fallout could get a lot worse as home video revenue losses spur job cuts and wipe out up to $400m in wages. I think it's time for studios to give Tommy Wiseau his first real big Hollywood gig -- he could do ads parodying his famous cries from The Room, in protest of the DVD rental kiosks. "You are tearing me apart, Redbox!" The study, which you can read in full on the Lacedc's website, cites Hollywood's reliance on exclusive windows of availability to justify different pricing for DVDs and distribution of revenue. In other words, the results are in line with studios like Fox, which want Redbox to be forced to wait at least a month »

John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway as Spider-Man 4’s Vulture and… Vulturess?
This is where those Black Cat stories from a few weeks back get really interesting. It's also where some purists start throwing little fits. New reports have John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway in the frame for roles in the new Spider-Man picture as father and daughter villains. Malkovich would be playing The Vulture, and Hathaway would be playing The Vulturess. The who...? You might be surprised, if not outright appalled, when you read just who she is... According to Movieline, Hathaway would indeed be playing Felicia Hardy, the comics character also known as Black Cat. In this version of events, however, she won't be going feline but will instead "become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess". The first report on there being a father-daughter villain team up actually would have pointed straight at the Vulture if somebody had a better memory. A source at the time kept referring to »

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Public Enemies, Lost (Season 5), and More
6 hours ago
This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Harry Potter And The Half-blood Prince (DVD available as single-disc and 2-Disc Digital Copy Special Edition) The Harry Potter franchise has marked a rare occasion in cinema, or perhaps even a first. To my knowledge, there is no other long-running, self-contained film series in history where the later entries have improved considerably on their predecessors. As the young Harry Potter has matured, so too have the films depicting his wizarding adventures, turning what initially began as a family friendly adaptation of, essentially, fluff wish-fulfillment silliness, into an artistically rendered journey of kids attempting to balance their growth into adults against the never-ending onslaught of horrors that plague their lives. Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban may remain the champion »

Saint John of Las Vegas: Photos, Poster and Movie Trailer
9 hours ago
Steve Buscemi has been doing a lot of indie films recently, and his latest is no different. Saint John of Las Vegas is a dramedy directed by another first time feature film director Hue Rhodes. The film follows "the wild and funny trip a guy has to take to discover there’s more than one way to hit the jackpot in life." After a run of bad luck, John (Steve Buscemi), a compulsive gambler, runs away from Las Vegas and toward a normal job and life. Taking a nondescript position in an auto insurance company in Albuquerque, he tries to get ahead in the straight world, amid the ever-present temptations of scratch-off lotto tickets. When his boss, Mr. Townsend (Peter Dinklage), asks John to accompany his top fraud debunker, Virgil (Romany Malco) on an investigation of a dubious car “accident” near Vegas, John sees an opportunity to get a promotion »

Dare Comics’ The Hunter Being Adapted to Film
10 hours ago
Another day, another comic book adaptation. This time we've learned that Scarlet Fire Entertainment is developing an adaptation of the Adam Hamdy's Dare Comic property, The Hunter. The series concerns an FBI agent who discovers that he has extraordinary powers. Hamdy is set to produce the adaptation, and will also be writing an entirely new adventure for the film. Apparently, Hamdy first intended for Hunter to be a film project, so news of the adaptation brings his initial concept full circle. Here's the synopsis for the first book in the series: When coordinated attacks devastate America, Gabriel Mot, a CIA agent with extraordinary powers, is determined to find those responsible. He reveals a hidden world of dark beings with tremendous destructive powers. In a world where monsters walk the Earth, nothing is what it seems. The main character seems like an amalgamation of superhero meets counter-terrorist. I'm imagining something »

Focus Hires Directors: Steve McQueen to Film Fela Kuti; Lone Scherfig to Helm One Day
12 hours ago
When Focus Features announced in January the intent to make a biopic based on the life of Nigerian band leader and activist Fela Kuti, I was immediately intrigued. Would the film look more at his music, or his status as sort of an emergent voice of the people? A mix of both is likely (and necessary) but now that we know the film's director, I expect the political overtones will take priority. Steve McQueen, director of the film Hunger, will take the reigns, according to Variety. This is great and interesting news; now I can't wait to see who he casts, and to what extent he's known in North America. When this was first announced, Fela Kuti was primarily a name known to music geeks and lovers of afrobeat, the dance-inducing form he invented. But now there's a Broadway musical that portrays his life and work in a massively upbeat manner. »

Rumor: Zombieland Writers to Take On Deadpool? Plus, Ryan Reynolds Dreams of Tarantino Directing
14 hours ago
As much as I wanted to love Wolverine, I couldn't get past the horrible dialog, plot, and misuse of iconic Marvel characters. They couldn't even get Wolverine's claws right---and it's not like they haven't had several other films to perfect such a simple effect. Needless to say, my enthusiasm for the upcoming Deadpool film has been fairly tepid thus far. Now Chud is running an interesting rumor that, if true, could actually make me hopeful for a Deadpool film. Apparently, Fox may be looking to hire the writers of this summer's Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, for the film. The writing duo, who have worked together on television projects like The Joe Schmo Show and Invasion Iowa, are pretty much a perfect fit for the wise-cracking character. They're certainly a better pair than Wolverine's David Benioff (a legitimately good writer, having written both the novel and screenplay »

Yet-another-clip from James Cameron's Avatar has shown up online, this time on the Fox-owned portal IGN. The new one-minute clip features Jake Sully's first glimpse at Pandora, by air. Watch the clip now, embedded after the jump. In the epic action adventure Avatar, James Cameron, the director of “Titanic,” takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. The film was first conceived by Cameron 14 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, Avatar delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film, disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story. Exclusive: Disney’s Upcoming Hand-Drawn Movies Revealed, Including The Snow Queen
20 hours ago
On Friday December 4th, I was lucky enough to spend the whole day at Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank. My mission was to film footage for a /Film Exclusive documentary about the return of hand-drawn animation, focusing on Disney's superlative new picture, The Princess and the Frog. During the day I carried out filmed interviews with the film's directors John Musker and Ron Clements, leading lady Anika Noni Rose, producer Peter del Vecho and a whole host of animation, storyboarding and design talent. I think I pushed deeper than you'd typically see on a behind-the-scenes piece for DVD, for example, and I'm sure I managed to get an awful lot of good footage and interesting discussion, as well as some genuine revelations about the current state of hand-drawn animation and the creative qualities of The Princess and the Frog. That documentary will be some time coming, however - I've »

Set Photos: Natalie Portman in Darren Aronofsky’s The Black Swan
21 hours ago
The first set photos of Natalie Portman from Darren Aronofsky's The Black Swan have been discovered online at Accidental Sexiness (via: our friends at Collider). The film, which is currently filming in New York City (the scene pictured took place in Lincoln Center), is a supernatural drama set in the world of New York City Ballet. Head on over to Accidental Sexiness to see more photos. Natalie Portman stars as Nina, a veteran ballerina who finds herself locked in to a competitive showdown with a rival dancer named Lilly (played by Mila Kunis) "with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance." The big twist is that Portman's character is not sure whether her rival is a supernatural apparition or if she is having delusions. And if that wasn't enough, you may remember reading that the script includes a sequence where the two main characters »

Wtf: Secret Wachowski Brothers Futuristic War Movie In Production?
Are the Wachowski Brothers shooting a top secret movie right now? This is the question I received in my email from /Film reader Seann A, who included a link to Arianna Huffington's twitter account. Many of you will recognize Huffington as a syndicated columnist and co-founder of the liberal news website The Huffington Post. Arianna sent out a bunch of interesting tweets today claiming to be shooting a part in a Wachowskis Brothers film, a movie about the Iraq War, from the perspective of the future. I would normally just write this off as not legit, but Huffington has posted photos from the set, one of which features Wachowski brother turned sister Lana Wachowski. Is it possible that the Wachowski Brothers have actually sneaked their next film into production without anyone noticing? Or is this just part of a short film, commercial, or test footage for a potential future project? »
