‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Projected to Nab Second Highest Grossing Opening Weekend Ever

Though Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League have yet to open, there's little to no disagreement amongst box office prognosticators that 2017's box office king will be Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Of course it will be. It's marketing thus far as been predictably excellent, including the latest trailer that threw in a number of possible plot twists that range from Daisy Ridley's Rey being tempted by the dark side and a face-off between Adam Driver's Kylo Ren and his mother (Carrie Fisher). Domestically speaking, there is simply no way that The Last Jedi will … »

Weekend Box Office: ‘Boo 2!’ Takes the Top Spot with $21 Million

The lesson to take from this weekend at the box office is never discount Tyler Perry. While this weekend proved to be remarkably middling at the multiplex, the famed Madea creator's latest (largely intolerable) film, Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, ably outpaced all comers to end up with $21.6 million. It's closest competition, Geostorm, came in with $13.3 million off of a truly jaw-dropping $120 million budget, whereas Perry's film cost a paltry $25 million. Director Brett Morgen on ‘Jane’ and Directing the Pilot of Marvel’s ‘Runaways’

From director Brett Morgen (Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, The Kid Stays in the Picture), the remarkable documentary Jane tells the story of Jane Goodall, a trailblazer who became one of the world’s most admired conversationists, through never-before-seen footage from the National Geographic archives. Her chimpanzee research not only discovered fascinating aspects of their life and behavior, never before known, but it taught us so much about our own similarities and differences with them. During the film’s Los Angeles press day, filmmaker Brett Morgen got on the phone with Collider to talk about how this documentary … »

James Wan & Jason Momoa Take to Social Media to Celebrate Wrapping Production on ‘Aquaman

21 October 2017 12:10 PM, PDT

In just about a month, we'll finally get to see Justice League, DC's latest step toward reversing the curse that they've been laboring under while Marvel has grown more ambitious, both visually and in terms of story. Though there's a basic fascination for me in the story, the more potent reason to pay the ticket price is to see what a film essentially co-directed by Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon looks like. After Wonder Woman, the best movie based on a DC property since The Dark Knight, expectations are high, especially considering the movie will … »

Despite awards season now officially kicking into high gear, we still have plenty of big blockbusters still left in the pipeline, whether that be Thor: Ragnarok and Justice League or Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. And yet, eyes are already turning toward the bevy of blockbusters that will be hitting theaters in 2018, which is still well over two months away. Friday Box Office: ‘Boo 2! A Madea Halloween’ Leads Pack of New Releases

21 October 2017 9:21 AM, PDT

In one of the most crowded weekends of new releases of the year, Tyler Perry is once again on top of the box office. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween is currently holding court at number one with some $7.4 million between previews and Friday estimates. That's about $2 million less than 2016's Boo! A Madea Halloween, which may not look good for the franchise's future but is still more than enough to clear the way for Perry's film to take the weekend. Full Synopsis for P.T. Anderson’s ‘Phantom Thread’ Teases a Unique London-Set Love Story

21 October 2017 8:35 AM, PDT

As it is with Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan, every P.T. Anderson movie is a cinematic event, whether you like the films or not. In a society that has glommed onto Marvel, DC, and Star Wars, Anderson has a largely unimpeachable track record, even when there is dissent about the substance of, say, Inherent Vice or Punch-Drunk Love. That's still impressive in this day and age, and one can see his reputation working overtime in the run-up to his upcoming ninth feature, Phantom Thread, about a famed dressmaker in 1950s London. A ‘Disaster Artist’ Headshot of James Franco as Tommy Wiseau Can Be All Yours

20 October 2017 3:45 PM, PDT

The Disaster Artist is one of the best films I’ve seen all year, and James Franco is genuinely great as The Room director Tommy Wiseau. It’s a performance that could have easily lapsed into parody and instead Franco gives Wiseau real pathos and heart in addition to being painfully hilarious. However, it’s harder to sell a multi-dimensional performance in ads, so A24 is resting on Franco going Wiseau to sell some tickets. Their latest bit of marketing allows fans to print out a headshot of James Franco as Tommy Wiseau for free right now. I’m … »

‘Geostorm’ Review: The Big Summer Blockbuster of 1998

20 October 2017 11:48 AM, PDT

I can only imagine what it was like working on the set of Dean Devlin’s Geostorm, but I like to think it involved Devlin, who after writing such 90s blockbusters as Independence Day and Godzilla, told cast and crew to gather round and hear stories about making movies in the 1990s. Everyone then proceeded to make a movie that looked like it came out of the late-90s in terms of plot, characters, stakes, and set pieces. It’s a movie that feels positively ancient by today’s blockbuster standards, and rather than coming off like a decent throwback, … »
