More '24' Movie Talk
Two years ago it was widely reported that a feature film version of 24 was in the works, set to go into production as soon as the series completed its run…whenever that was. Many thought that the show had already perpetuated far too much of a good thing beyond its second season, and that it wouldn't translate well to the big screen without being forced to jettison the ticking clock gimmick that had made the series so successful. In other words, a bit of a catch 22.
Regardless of how you may feel about the idea, it's apparently still alive. According to Kiefer Sutherland, the cast and writers of 24 are determined to make a feature film version of the series. Speaking with The Press Association during a break in filming the Fox series, Sutherland joked, "We've been perpetuating the rumor for years!"
And still are, apparently. The actor added that if a film version is confirmed, »
Marvel Properties May Head for Television
28 December 2009 9:40 PM, PST
After nine seasons, no one can deny that Smallville has been a smash hit for WB/CW. The formula has been so successful, in fact, that Disney likely couldn't help but take notice. According to The Sacramento Bee, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said the company may initially develop new characters for television as opposed to the big screen, seeing huge potential in TV.
The plan is to develop this strategy for some of Marvel's lesser known characters such as Ant-Man and Iron Fist.
"Instead of making a $200 million movie and kind of betting the farm on one character, you can develop a television pilot, a television series," Iger told analysts.
While we like the idea, we're not sure about selling an entire series on a third tier hero. On the other hand, don your tinfoil hats for a moment and feel free to indulge in speculation about which of »
To Ghostbusters or Not to Ghostbusters?
28 December 2009 9:35 PM, PST
Truthfully, it's hard to gauge what the contemporary public's thoughts are concerning another Ghostbusters sequel. On the one hand, the new Ghostbusters 3 video game seems to have amped up the desire of fans to see another adventure on the big screen, and yet the only folks who ever seem to talk about another sequel are the original film's actors (Columbia brass are noticeably quiet most of the time…at least officially).
Chatter about a third film has been ongoing for many months now, yet no substantive announcements have been made. Of course, that hasn't stopped Dan Aykroyd from talking about his spec screenplay, and now, Harold Ramis has revealed to Heeb magazine that Ghostbusters 3 will begin filming during the summer, with a 2011 release date eyed.
"Something's going to happen," he said. "Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. »
What Will Happen in an 'Avatar' Sequel.?
28 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST
It's virtually a foregone conclusion that a sequel to Avatar will happen. The film earned yet another $19.4 million domestically on Monday, bringing the domestic total to $232 million in just 11 days. The film's success and remarkable FX advancements (note I said remarkable, not "industry changing"—the 3-D is rather conventional), doubtless has 20th Century Fox execs dreaming of sequels, and James Cameron has himself talked about this possibility since before Avatar arrived in theaters.
If you're curious how the film's ending would pave the way for another installment, Cameron sat down recently with the La Times and explained just how such a story might be handled—and that it might involve leaving Pandora, which is actually one of several moons orbiting a primary planetary body.
"The planet in Pandora's sky is called Polyphemus and its a primary for a system of moons just like in our solar system," Cameron confirmed. "We »
What Will the 'Star Trek' Sequel be About?
28 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST
During a recent conversation with MTV, Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek), discussed not only her forthcoming projects, Takers, The Losers and the Death of a Funeral remake, but also what's happening with the sequel to last summer's tremendously successful Star Trek reboot.
"I spoke to Jj [Abrams] and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci," she said. "And we'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year."
Thus, if pre-production begins in a year, then shooting will likely commence in November of 2011, with a likely release date of spring or summer, 2013.
Of course, what this also means is that the story idea must be well underway. And while no hints have as yet been dropped about what the story might entail, previous reports and some new speculation might point to likely possibilities. »
Martin Campbell Picks Best of the Best for 'Green Lantern'
28 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST
Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is wasting no time in putting together an A-list crew to help him bring Green Lantern to the big screen. It's a virtual 'who's who' of Oscar talent, from cinematography through to production design.
Dian Beebe, who previously won an Oscar for his work on Memoirs of a Geisha and was nominated for Chicago has signed aboard as cinematographer, while production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson, both of whom won Oscars for their work on Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, have also joined Green Lantern.
Art director Francois Audouy, who previously provided concept art for Avatar and I Am Legend, and worked as art director for Watchmen and the first Transformers, will bring his talents to bear on the DC franchise.
We're still waiting to hear who will be cast in support roles opposite Ryan Reynolds, and indeed, who »
New Trailer for Chis Nolan's 'Inception'
27 December 2009 9:15 PM, PST
We might still be waiting for a proper synopsis that describes director Christopher Nolan's forthcoming film Inception (indeed, we may never get one, which intentionally heightens the mystery), but we do have a new trailer for the film, courtesy of Warner Bros. and Apple, and you can watch it by clicking on the Trailer tab above.
All we know is that Inception is labeled as action/sci-fi, set within the architecture of the mind, and involves a CEO-type who becomes involved in a blackmailing scandal.
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ken Watanabe, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine and Dileep Rao.
Inception opens in conventional and IMAX theaters on July 16, 2010. »
It's 'Action' for 'Captain America' in June
27 December 2009 9:10 PM, PST
Speaking recently with Fangoria about taking over the directorial duties on his forthcoming film The Wolfman, Joe Johnston revealed that Marvel Studios is planning a June start for The First Avenger: Captain America.
Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. "By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three," recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of The First Avenger: Captain America, which he’s readying for a June start."
Casting has yet to be announced, so we can only speculate that we won't have long to wait before we find out who will play the coveted role of Steve Rogers, the young soldier, who, during WWII, volunteers for the secret Super Soldier program in the Us Army, ingesting a serum that gives him heightened strength and abilities.
Personally, I'm hoping writers Chris Markus and Stephen McFeely play to the Iron Man/Captain America historical tie-in. »
The 'T' in 'A-Team' Doesn't Stand for Mr. T
27 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST
Perhaps this is a good thing. While the popular trend is to entice former television stars to participate in cameos for the feature films based on the series in which they once starred, it's a bit of a "device," after all. And sometimes that "device" can actually take you right out of the film. Starsky & Hutch (2004) was certainly awful on it's own, but the tacked-on addition of original series stars Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul at the end only served to punctuate how dreadful the previous 90 minutes had truly been by making us long for the original series.
Seems Mr. T is wise enough to understand all this. Speaking recently with Latino Review — and quashing rumors that he might appear in the forthcoming A-Team feature film — Mr. T made it quite clear that he has no interest in appearing in the big screen outing…and was very clear about »
