Muse slate six U.S. 2010 tour dates, add Silversun Pickups

If you missed out on tickets for the scant four dates that Muse slated for the West Coast this month, don't feel too bad. The British space-rock band has added six new North American dates to its schedule, starting Feb . 27 in Atlanta. There are few concerts scheduled in between that at April 5, which makes us think more are on the way. Tickets go up on Dec. 12, with a fan pre-sale starting tomorrow (Dec. 9). Silversun Pickups have been tapped as openers. While Muse has performed at New York's Madison Square Garden before, this marks the first time... »

Listen: Sade makes a militant return on 'Soldier of Love'

If you’re under 30, unless your parents have introduced you to Sade, it’s probably impossible to understand how adored she was when her records first came out in the 1980s. In fact, you may have never heard her name.   Here was the stunning, exotic  British/Nigerian beauty , who sang with total ennui, in a somewhat flat monotone that nonetheless stirred emotions within the listener even if Sade remained impassive. Songs like “Your Love is King,” “Smooth Operator,” and “No Ordinary Love” were mainstays on MTV. Indeed, with her sleek, gorgeous presence and stylized videos, she and a then-nascent MTV were... »

Listen: Smashing Pumpkins' 'A Song for a Son'

The first of 44 new songs that will be unspooled for free on Smashing Pumpkins’ website is available now for download on the band’s website. Sp’s Billy Corgan told AOL’s Spinner that “A Song for a Son” is about the child he never had. It’s a moving, disquieting tune.   "It's got something to do about not having any kids and thinking about why I don't have any kids," Corgan tells Spinner. "And then also kind of thinking about my relationship with my father -- there's some kind of connection there, but it's not overt. I didn't set out to write that.... »

TV Review: ABC's 'Better Off Ted' returns for Season Two

There aren't that many problems with ABC's "Better Off Ted," which kicks off its second season on Tuesday (Dec. 8) at 9:30 p.m. Before "Parks & Recreation" kicked into overdrive in its fall episodes and before "Modern Family" found its early consistent footing, "Better Off Ted" was probably my pick for the year's best new comedy, in fact. One of the things that *is* wrong with "Better Off Ted" isn't at all the fault of the Victor Fresco-created workplace sitcom, but it's this: I may have written about "Better Off Ted" too many times. I reviewed it (positively) when it premiered... »

Are John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway the villains in 'Spider-Man 4'?

I don't know what to think about this latest "Spider-Man 4" rumor from Movieline. John Malkovich as The Vulture?  I can get behind that.  He's physically right for the part, and he's at the age where he suggests the way the character was written, but he's still got the right stamina to actually play the part.  And certainly he's a great actor, and a great villain if the material is right.  And, let's not forget, he was one of the actors considered for The Green Goblin for the original "Spider-Man," and was evidently a real possibility at one point before the... »

TV Ratings: 'Men,' 'Big Bang Theory' top Carrie Underwood on Monday

Fast National ratings for Monday, December 7, 2009.   Fox actually got a solid audience for its Carrie Underwood holiday variety special, solid enough that we can probably expect to see the "American Idol" winner in future network programming, but the country superstar was no match for CBS' comedies, which dominated in the demo and set the network up for a comfortable Monday win.   Among adults 18-49, CBS did a 4.1 rating, well ahead of the 2.3 rating for Fox and ABC's 2.2 rating. NBC was fourth with a 1.5 rating, while The CW's 1.2 rating was a close fifth.... »

Review: Chris Brown's 'Graffiti': Is it just scrawl?

How about if we just agree to ignore the elephant in the room and judge Chris Brown’s “Graffiti” solely on its musical merits instead of through the filter of an admitted domestic abuser?   The problem is he won’t let us.  It’s impossible to listen to much of “Graffiti” without parsing it for apologies to Rihanna and “he didn’t just say that” moments.  For example, “Crawl” is one of the album’s high spots, a gorgeous, yearning ballad worthy of R. Kelly full of regret. It’s easy to imagine it at a love letter, a public apology of sorts to Rihanna... »

TV's Best of the Decade: No. 25 -- 'The O.C.'

Bear with me while I try something out here...   "The O.C." was "The Decameron" for The Aughts.   Like I said, bear with me.   In Giovanni Boccaccio's "The Decameron," 10 young people flee Florence in the midst of The Plague. Holing themselves up in an isolated villa, they recount stories, many of them tales of deceit and debauchery, as a way of passing the time and avoiding directly facing the tragedy below.   Created by Josh Schwartz, "The O.C." premiered in August of 2003 and aired 2007. Examined now, years after its 92-episode run, "The O.C." stands as a... »

Golden Globes ready to go gaga for 'Avatar'

Over a decade ago James Cameron was battling media reports that his delayed and pricey epic "Titanic" was a creative disaster and ready to sink at the box office like the famed ocean liner whose story it dramatically re-told.  Instead, the Paramount Pictures/20th Century Fox production became a cultural phenomenon and grossed over $1.8 billion worldwide and won a staggering 11 Academy Awards including the prestigious Best Picture trophy.  In less than two weeks, Cameron returns to the big screen with his almost as hyped Sci-Fi motion capture adventure "Avatar." The film has sparked heated debate among genre fans and everyday... »

Summit cheats on 'Twilight' with the world's most famous vampire

Jeeez, Summit.  If you love vampires so much, why don't you marry them? Oh, wait, I think you probably are in one of the next few "Twilight" movies.  Just goes to show you, no one has more riding on the continuing relevance of vampires as cultural icons than Summit Entertainment.  The second installment of the "Twilight" series was released last month, and since then, "New Moon" has earned 275 grazillion dollars.  Roughly. Now they're trying to do the one thing that "Twilight" would never be accused of doing:  they want to scare you. And it looks like actor Charlie Hunnam, best... »

'The Forgotten' remembers Elisha Cuthbert

7 December 2009 12:34 PM, PST

We know she hasn't had any truly memorable projects outside of her run on "24," but we wouldn't exactly say that Elisha Cuthbert has been forgotten.   Oh wait. Nevermind. Elisha Cuthbert hasn't been forgotten, she's just been cast in a recurring role on ABC's mostly unremembered freshman procedural "The Forgotten."   ABC announced on Monday (Dec. 7) that Cuthbert will join the cast of "The Forgotten" in February playing Maxine Denver, described as "a strong and successful Chicago professional who is forced to put her skepticism of 'amateur detectives' aside when The Forgotten Network begins investigating a case close to... »

HitFix Interview: Sarah Chalke talks 'Prep & Landing' and 'Scrubs'

7 December 2009 10:59 AM, PST

While new seasonal interlopers arrive every year, the Christmas Special market is still dominated by the old classics featuring Charlie Brown, The Grinch, Rudolph and Frosty in the same form they've had for decades.   ABC will attempt to produce a new classic with Tuesday (Dec. 8) night's premiere of "Prep & Landing," the network's first television special produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The story has a leg-up on achieving classic status thanks to the presence of Pixar mastermind John Lasseter as executive producer.   "Prep & Landing" reveals the untold story of the elves who make up Santa's advance... »

On Dec. 6, a tour bus carrying Cuomo, his wife, infant daughter and nanny slid off the road after skidding on ice in New York. The group’s website has a full report, including pictures of rescue crews using the jaws of life to pry out Cuomo, who suffered three broken ribs.   “We are sorry to say that the rest of the December Raditude Tour has been cancelled - when we can reschedule the dates we will, of course,” according to the site.... »

TV Ratings: Even in defeat, Brett Favre wins Sunday for NBC

7 December 2009 8:47 AM, PST

Fast National ratings for Sunday, December 6, 2009.   As "Monday Night Football" ratings-watchers can tell you, America loves Brett Favre. And on Sunday night, America got to watch Brett Favre lose to the Arizona Cardinals, which didn't benefit the Minnesota Vikings, but certainly helped NBC to a ratings win.   Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 5.6 rating, comfortably ahead of the 3.9 rating for Fox and ABC's 3.4 rating in the key demographic. CBS was fourth with a 2.4 rating.   Overall, NBC averaged an estimated 15.1 million viewers in primetime to go with a 9.1 rating/14 share. ABC... »
