First Look: Universal's Bourne Blu-ray + DVD Flipper Cover Art

On January 19, Universal Studios Home Entertainment is returning to their HD DVD roots with the standalone release of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum on Blu-ray + DVD "Flipper" discs.

To follow on that news, we have for you today a first look at the individual Blu-ray covers for each of the Matt Damon as Jason Bourne films. They are virtually identical to the artwork seen on the slim cases that came packaged in the Bourne Trilogy set with the exception of a giant banner across the top advertising the dual format discs within.

Online retailer Amazon.com has already begun taking pre-orders for the standalone Bourne films at $19.99 each for $60 total for all 3, $15 less than buying the Bourne Trilogy box set.

Click here to pre-order The Bourne Identity on Blu-ray for $19.99 at Amazon.com.

See The Sorcerer's Apprentice Movie Trailer

Disney has dropped the first trailer for the Jerry Bruckheimer produced and Jon Turteltaub directed The Sorcerer's Apprentice reimagining feature film.

The trailer gives us a first look at Nicolas Cage as the sorcerer putting his magic to work and the car chase sequence that resulted in a stunt gone awry leaving two bystanders injured. There is a lot of magic being used in Manhattan out in plain sight so either the story relies on a heavy dose of suspending disbelief or magic is coming out of the closet.

Along with the trailer comes an official synopsis: The Sorcerer's Apprentice is an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil. Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina »

Warner Bros. has pinned high hopes on Invictus, the latest from director Clint Eastwood that stars Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon that is scoring a solid 78% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.

In Disney's camp is The Princess and the Frog, the first hand-drawn animated feature in years based on the classic fairytale. It currently is enjoying an even better 81% fresh rating.

The Weekend Box Office Prophet game lets you predict the weekend box office totals for five films. The difference between your prediction and the final tally for each film is then weighed against the other players to determine a top finisher. Gears of War Movie Producer Dishes on Film's Timeline

The upcoming (hopefully) Gears of War movie producer Wyck Godfrey recently sat down with Making Of to discuss the challenges of translating the epic video game from Xbox 360 to the big screen.

He hints that the film will begin shortly before Emergence Day, revealing the planet Sera firing on all cylinders and running smoothly. Then Emergence Day strikes and the world is turned upside down with the Locust Horde decimating every city in less than 24 hours.

Godfrey envisions the bulk of the film taking place in the one to two days after Emergence Day as survivors struggle to cope with the catastrophe and avoid the Locust Horde. It is here we will meet Marcus Fenix and other Cog soldiers who form a resistance and strike back.

An interesting comparison Godfrey makes is to Cloverfield and how the film transitions from celebration to a surprise attack to the aftermath. Sounds like »

Weekend Box Office Prophet Results for Dec 4-6

7 December 2009 7:31 PM, PST

The Prophet approach this past round of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game with the logic that box office receipts would drop after the busy Thanksgiving weekend. The average scores for all the other players indicated the majority felt hot box office business would roll on for another weekend.

When the dust settled and final weekend box office numbers were plugged in, the Prophet had secured his first clean sweep in beating the average scores on all five films including missing The Blind Side by a mere $500k and picking the Sandra Bullock hit over The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Desert11 had the best performance overall followed by Leon and laureyrob in second and third, respectively. View the full results here.

A win by the Prophet means that, per the new rules, the prize of (500) Days of Summer on Blu-ray Disc or DVD rolls into the next round with an additional prize up for grabs. »

Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones Pushed to January

7 December 2009 11:14 AM, PST

DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures have pushed back the wide release date for Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones from Christmas Day to January 15, 2010.

The fantastical film will still be unspooled in Toronto, Canada on December 25, and in New York and Los Angeles this upcoming weekend. If you are in any of those markets then check your local cinemas for showings.

The reasoning behind this shuffle is unknown but it could have something to do with staying clear of Fox's Avatar on December 18 and Warner Bros.' Sherlock Holmes on Christmas. Its new competition will be The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and The Spy Next Door with Jackie Chan.

Keep in mind Paramount and DreamWorks might decide to move The Lovely Bones again so January 15, though just confirmed, is still subject to change. »

Saw VI Blu-ray Details and Cover Art

7 December 2009 10:03 AM, PST

Saw VI with Tobin Bell was the weakest box office performer in the series thus far despite managing decent reviews from critics which should make it a sought out commodity on home video.

We can now confirm that Lionsgate has pegged January 26 as the release date for Saw VI on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. For a first time in the series, the original Saw film will be packaged in with the Blu-ray and both DVD versions to help introduce newcomers to where it all began -- and of course spur sales of the "middle" films.

Lionsgate is bringing the unrated director's cut of Saw VI to Blu-ray like its predecessors in 1.78.1 1080p video and 7.1 DTS-hd Master Audio. Full bonus features play out as follows:

Fox Releases Final Avatar Run Time

7 December 2009 9:01 AM, PST

Fox stepped on all the circulating rumors regarding James Cameron's Avatar run time by releasing the official final cut's duration down to the second.

James Cameron's Avatar's run time will be 161 minutes and 34 seconds, or 2 hours and 40-and-a-half minutes.

When rumors first began to spread about how long Avatar would run the times were in excess of three hours. Then they began to shrink down towards the two hour mark with the final number falling in the middle.

Featurettes like this one narrated by Sigourney Weaver suggest to me that James Cameron has a large cache of additional footage not crucial to the plot that was cut to maximize showings per day. The eventual 2010 release of Avatar on Blu-ray Disc and DVD will hopefully bring that footage home. »

The Last Airbender Trailer Delayed

7 December 2009 8:06 AM, PST

Producer Frank Marshall Tweeted late last week that the anticipated first full trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar: The Last Airbender has been delayed from debuting this month all the way to February.

The reasoning behind the delay per Marshall's Tweet is that Ilm has not finished enough shots despite the effects being on schedule. That makes some sense given it is an effects-heavy film but if so is atrocious planning on Shyamalan's part.

I'm thinking there might be more to the delay than some missing CGI. Pure speculation here, but Fox might be waiting for James Cameron's Avatar to come and go before unspooling the first full look at Night Shyamalan's flick which shares the same name. The last thing Fox needs is their film getting lost in consumer confusion.

So for now, The Last Airbender teaser trailer and fuzzy character images will have to suffice. »

Dead Space 2 is Official; First Details

7 December 2009 7:18 AM, PST

Electronic Arts has formally announced a sequelt to the wildly successful and creepy horror game Dead Space is currently in development at Visceral Games for Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC. A separate Wii version was not part of the announcement.

Dead Space 2 puts players back into the role of Isaac Clarke to battle another seemingly neverending onslaught of Necromorphs as the "infection" begins to spread throughout space. There will be new characters, weapons, zero-g environments and of course nasty enemies to battle against.

Twists in the story are to be expected and promised by EA. The only hint they'll offer as to what to expect from the story is this time "Isaac will be calling the shots."

EA offers no timetable for Dead Space to arrive in stores but considering the first game was released in 2008, a late 2010 speculative arrival timed with Halloween makes sense. »

McG Talks Terminator 5 and 6 in Salvation Blu-ray Bd-Live Chat

6 December 2009 7:18 PM, PST

Saturday's Terminator Salvation Bd-Live chat with director McG saw the director brimming with confidence or arrogance, depending on your point of view, about the future of the Terminator franchise.

When asked about the possibility of a Terminator 5, McG not only stated one is coming but also that he will direct it. And Terminator 6.

McG went on to state that his vision for Terminator 5 would include Sarah Connor and possible Robert Patrick playing a scientist who would become the model for the liquid metal T-1000 model.

Keep in mind the rights to Terminator could be changing hands before February 1, 2010, when Halycon has announced the currently ongoing auction will come to a close. There is a chance Halcyon will retain the rights and could bring back McG but if Terminator goes to another studio, that studio may be more comfortable finding their own man for the job. »

Sigourney Weaver Narrates Awesome Avatar Featurette

6 December 2009 6:58 PM, PST

Fox is doing a fantastic job building interest in James Cameron's Avatar if my rapidly increasing curiosity is any indication. My eyes are glued to the television with each new TV spot in anticipation of peeking some new footage.

Then something like this new featurette comes along that should seal the deal for anyone on the fence about seeing Avatar theatrically. Narrated by Sigourney Weaver in a deliberate nod to her work with BBC's Planet Earth series drawing parallels between our world and the film's, the nearly four-minute long look at Pandora's landscape, inhabitants and ecology blows the door open on how majestic the alien world James Cameron has concocted is. And we're not even seeing it in 3D yet.

The featurette is viewable at Canal Plus (via AICN), a French website. But don't worry; the narration is in English. Go see it now. »
