Scoop This: 'The Hobbit' Casting, 'Avatar' TV Spots and Mel Gibson as James Bond?
Guillermo del Toro Joins The Hobbit…Cast? Yup, you heard that right. The Hobbit director Guillermo del Toro revealed on the One Ring message boards that he will be playing one of the creatures in the movie. He says, "I had a hand on the design of the creature and I will personally sculpt the appliances that will be applied on my face and hands. I used to sculpt the creatures for Necropia (my FX company) and I miss it a bit. I will have a line or two and die quickly." In another interview with Total Film, del Toro described the film's monsters as being "absolutely gorgeous" and "majestic". Recently Viggo Mortensen was asked whether he'd be interested in returning to the franchise, and while he'd love a chance to do that, he admitted...

Will Smith's Latest Tearjerker Is...
It's not too hard to pick up on Will Smith's acting pattern. Usually he'll star in some big-budgeted affair, and then follow that up with a smaller, awards-type movie. Sometimes he'll wedge a comedy in between, though Smith tends to like two kinds of movies: really Giant blockbusters and really sappy awards contenders. This latest rumored Smith film falls into the latter sappy awards contenders' category, somewhere along the lines of The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. In fact, that same director, Gabriele Muccino, may once again collaborate with Smith on Flowers for Algernon, based on the book by Daniel Keyes that has gone through several adaptations over the years – most notably with Ralph Nelson's Charly, which nabbed Cliff Robertson an Academy Award in...

Spider-Man 4 Villain Rumor: Rachel McAdams as Black Cat
5 hours ago
With Spider-Man 4 heading into production early next year, we're going to be hearing about the film's casting a whole lot in the next month or so – especially since they're already meeting with actors and actresses for those unspecified villain roles. Mania.com has reported (via some inside source) that producers have already met with Rachel McAdams regarding the role of Black Cat in Spider-Man 4 – which, if true, would mean that Sam Raimi is definitely including more than one villain in his fourth installment, contrary to earlier reports. Similar to Batman's Catwoman, Black Cat (aka Felicia Day) is a cat burglar and sometimes crime fighter who grew pretty close to Spider-Man and felt a sort of kinship to him since, to a certain degree, they were both...

DVD of the Week: 'Up'!
Yet another masterwork from the Pixar folks, Up dominated the summer box office and will no doubt come through at Oscar time, and for good reason, thanks to gorgeous animation and pitch-perfect writing and dialogue that will bring tears and laughter--sometimes both at the same time. The story begins when an annoying 8-year-old stows away on an old widower's floating house, which he's rigged with thousands of balloons to be able to drift to South America, the land his wife always wanted to see. The more adult message of life, death and hope might escape the young ones, but they'll be plenty amused by the antics of all involved once they touch ground. Quite possibly nothing tops Up's first four minutes, though: a beautifully animated montage set to music with no words that tells...

Jake Gyllenhaal Goes All 'Groundhog Day' for 'Source Code'
9 November 2009 6:42 PM, PST
This past summer, a small sci-fi film called Moon took everyone by surprise and not only amassed a pretty large fanbase, but also inspired a grassroots Oscar campaign for the film's star, Sam Rockwell. Now, Moon director Duncan Jones will follow up his debut feature with a very cool sounding flick called Source Code, which will star Jake Gyllenhaal, according to Variety. Summit Entertainment will distribute the sci-fi thriller, which follows "a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it." It kinda sounds like a more intense take on a Groundhog Day-type concept, and the script – which has been floating around since 2007 (when Shane Abbess was tapped to...

Nicole Kidman and Gwyneth Paltrow to Play...Lovers?
9 November 2009 2:58 PM, PST
Oh you read that correctly – two of our generation's most beautiful, seductive and charming actresses are now set to appear opposite one another on the big screen as a pretty unique pair of lovers. Both ladies will star in a film called The Danish Girl, which is based on David Eberschoff's novel and will be directed by Tomas Alfredson, who wowed audiences last year with his vampire flick Let the Right One In. In The Danish Girl, Paltrow (who just signed on, replacing Charlize Theron after the actress ditched the project for unspecified reasons) will play Greta, a portrait painter in 1920s Denmark who, in need of a model, asked her husband Elnar (Kidman) to dress up in women's clothes. Elnar liked "being" a woman so much that he began living as one named Lili, who Greta...

Funny or Lame: Taylor Swift's SNL 'Twilight' Spoof
9 November 2009 2:44 PM, PST
If you managed to catch Saturday Night Live over the weekend, then you probably watched this week's host, Taylor Swift, poke a little fun at Twilight in a parody trailer for a film called Firelight. Here, instead of a girl falling deeply in love with a vampire, Swift plays a girl who, aside from biting her lip, like, a lot, falls for Frankenstein. Oh yes, when "The Franks" invade a small town high school, things take a drastic turn for the weird as our heroine does all she can to keep her relationship with Frankenstein going without being accidentally strangled by her one true love. I thought the spoof was cute, and Swift definitely deserves kudos for turning out a pretty hilarious performance – not just in this video, but throughout the entire episode. But what do you...
