Casey Johnson, 'Iron Man 2' And 'Toy Story 3' In Today's Twitter-Wood

The death of Johnson & Johnson heiress and fiancée to Tila Tequila Casey Johnson had a lot of Twitter-Wood's attention this morning a few of Johnson's close friends tweet their thoughts on her passing, including Paris and Nicky Hilton and Lindsay Lohan.

Elsewhere, it was business as usual. Jon Favreau entertained his leading man Robert Downey Jr. at the "Iron Man 2" office, and Lee Unkrich posted that animation is almost done on "Toy Story 3." Check out their tweets after the jump, along with a photo from Simon Pegg, what Diablo Cody's doing hanging around with Quentin Tarantino and which "New Moon" actress has been writing songs. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for January 5, 2009.

'American Beauty' Director Sam Mendes May Step Up To Helm 'Bond 23'

Sam Mendes is a big talent. James Bond is a big franchise. Put the two together... crap, I don't know what to think. How about "Sweet!"?

The news, coming to us by way of The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, is that the Oscar-winning director of "American Beauty" may next turn his attention to the smooth-talking, lady-seducing, martini-drinking -- shaken, not stirred, 'natch -- MI6 agent with a license to kill. The article states that Mendes is "in negotiations" to helm "Bond 23." MTV reached out MGM for comment, but the official line is that they are not confirming anything at this time.

All that said, Mendes sure could bring something fresh to the Bond series. He's a filmmaker with an eye for visual spectacle, but not in the action-packed event blockbuster style that the franchise is known for. He has a special talent for painting moving portraits with his films; look at "American Beauty, »

'Jersey Shore' Stars Teach 'Youth In Revolt' Star Michael Cera How To Fist Pump

Yesterday, you got to watch as Michael Cera had his hair styled by "Jersey Shore" star Pauly D. Today brings lesson two: fist pumps. Cera, now properly styled and decked out in a new Ed Hardy tee, gets a lesson in how to beat the air with his fist from people who know a thing or two about such things. It's a pretty hilarious scene.

Cera's hang time with the "Jersey Shore" crew is part of a promotion he's doing for "Youth in Revolt," which hits theaters this Friday. You'll be able to see more from Cera and his new pals in commercial breaks during Thursday's night's airing of the latest "Jersey Shore" episode on MTV.

Exclusive: David Belle Shows Off His Parkour Skills In This 'District 13: Ultimatum' Clip

"District B13," released in 2004 (2006 in the States), is a stylish action flick written/produced by Luc Besson and directed by Pierre Morel, who is making headlines today for signing on to helm "Dune." The movie stars David Belle, founder of le parkour, so it's highlighted by some amazing feats of acrobatic artistry.

I haven't yet seen the sequel, "District 13: Ultimatum," but Belle is the star once again so I expect more of the same stylish action. That's certainly how things look in this clip, in which Belle dispatches a group of bad guys with little more than his limbs and an unframed painting. The story -- written by Besson once again -- picks up three years after the last movie, with Belle's Leito and Cyril Raffaeli's Damien returning to the titular district to fix the lawlessness that runs rampant there. You can check out "District 13: Ultimatum" right now via Video On Demand, »

Check Out 'Bitch Slap,' 'Sweetgrass' And 'Mine' In This Week's unLimited

It's the first full week of 2010, and that means it's the beginning of dumping ground season. New movies out of Hollywood will be looking less and less appealing over the next few months, but that shouldn't stop you from going to the movies, especially if you live in a major metropolitan area. Now is the time especially for foreign films hoping for Oscar contention to start rolling out in America, and of course tons and tons of documentaries will continue to see limited release. This week, there's even a hot new exploitation flick opening, for those of you who like that sort of thing. So if you're not too excited about daybreaking vampires, leap years or youths in revolt, read on to see what other options you might have this weekend.

"Bitch Slap"

What it is: A modern, stylish exploitation action movie in the vein of "Grindhouse" and somewhat like "Sin City, »

Exclusive: 'Daybreakers' Clip Illustrates The Dangers Posed By Synthetic Blood

Ah "Daybreakers." Much like Stephenie Meyer's phenomenally popular "Twilight" series, you give us a fresh, original viewpoint on a long-since-established cornerstone of popular culture: the vampire myth.

The world of "Daybreakers" is one that has been overrun by a humanity transformed into the blood-suckers. Few humans remain and blood supplies are dwindling. Life has in many ways carried on as it always has when the story opens, only now blood is mixed into everyone's diet. In this exclusive clip, we see star Ethan Hawke's Edward treating a patient with a synthetic blood substitute that he's developed. Things do not go as planned...

'Dune': A Mini Cheat Sheet On The History Of The Remake

The arrival of "Taken" director Pierre Morel on the planet Arrakis is the latest development in the twisty history of a big screen remake of "Dune." Based on the 1965 sci-fi novel, David Lynch's version—awesomely weird, or just plain weird, depending on your sensibilities—arrived in 1984. Little over two decades later, rumors that a second cinematic take was in the works.

In the fall of 2007, Ain't It Cool News suggested that "Friday Night Lights" director Peter Berg was Paramount's top choice to helm the remake. That December, MTV News exclusively confirmed the news.

"If it weren't for the writer's strike, we'd be in it right now," Berg told us.

Describing the size and scope of the film, the director said, "Big, big, big."

Exciting stuff, no doubt. But then we didn't hear anything for a while. Berg launched his very first blockbuster with "Hancock" and fielded an avalanche of other offers, »

Exclusive: Check Out This New 'City Island' Poster

I'll admit, I don't know a whole lot about "City Island," from director Raymond De Felitta. My parents caught it last year at the Tribeca Film Festival and it was their favorite of the 'fest, which is enough of an endorsement for me. The comedy follows the family Rizzo, a dysfunctional crew who all have something to hide from one another. That all starts to change after an ex-con named Tony (Steven Strait) comes to live with the family.

"City Island" opens in theaters on March 19. You can find more on the flick and its cast -- which includes the talents of Andy Garcia, Julianna Margulies, Emily Mortimer and Alan Arkin -- on the official website at www.cityislandmovie.com. What we exclusively have for you today is a shiny new poster featuring the family Rizzo and their new friend. The image up on the right is just a small »

The 'Lost' Supper: What Clues Can We Glean About The Show's Final Season From These New Promo Images?

"Lost" is coming to an end. Considered by many, including yours truly, to be one of the single greatest television shows of all time — heck, one of the most compelling stories ever told — there's an understandably high level of interest from fans as the mysterious show ramps up for its final episodes, beginning in February. While ABC has refused to air preview footage from the upcoming season based upon the requests of executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, that's not stopping them from creating their own brand new promotional campaigns.

Case in point — the latest "Lost" promo images depict the final season's regular cast as participating in "The Last Supper," the famous religious image that's been replicated for other shows in the past, such as "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Sopranos."

But as "Lost" is already a show based entirely upon paying attention to the details, it's clear that this »

'The Hobbit' Casting Breakdowns Reveal Details About Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield And More!

While we're still not sure what Bilbo Baggins hates — other than chipped glasses, cracked plates, blunted knives and bent forks, of course — we're a bit closer to learning what Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson are looking for in their titular Hobbit.

A casting call for "The Hobbit," featuring breakdowns of several of the movie's main characters, is making the rounds online courtesy of Spoiler TV. Those of us who have already read J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved novel — or at least have seen that hilariously wonderful cartoon adaptation — already know a good deal about some of these characters, but it's nonetheless a treat to see the breakdowns in print.

Bilbo, for instance, is accurately described as a "well-to-do, respectable Hobbit," who has an unknown wealth of courage, sense of humor and practicality. Of all of these characteristics, Bilbo's strongest trait is "his humanity; he is empathetic with a big heart and generous spirit. »

James Bond 23 Could Be Delayed By MGM Financial Troubles

Update: MGM has informed MTV News that "Bond 23" is not on hold, and that scripting is still underway.

We knew this would happen. Ever since it was reported that MGM was nearing bankruptcy, we feared that the 007 franchise would be in trouble. Now we finally have an update from producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli from TotalFilm magazine (via Mi6.com) confirming that the production timeline for Bond 23 is "up in the air."

The uncertainty was already hinted at a month ago by screenwriter Peter Morgan, according to Mi6.com, with pre-production on the "Quantum of Solace" follow-up being put on hiatus until February. How this might affect the overall plans to begin shooting late this year and release the film in 2011 is unknown, but it doesn't sound good.

Yet TotalFilm's interview with Wilson and Broccoli doesn't really make it sound as if the next installment is »

Angelina Jolie Flies High, Gets Bloody On The Set Of 'Salt'

You've all seen the trailer for "Salt" by now, right? If not, you should. It's badass. It's also embedded after the jump for your viewing enjoyment, so go on and take a look. First though, feast your eyes on this pic of star Angelina Jolie on the set of "Salt"...

I can't quite tell what she's doing with her hands there, but she's definitely dangling from something and she's definitely got blood all over her chest. What does it all mean?! For those who don't know, Jolie stars in the movie as Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent who ends up on the run after an enemy agent fingers her as a Russian spy. Sounds good to me. Check out the trailer after the jump.

'Dune' Adaptation Goes To 'Taken' Director Pierre Morel

We've known for awhile now that Peter Berg is going to be too busy with other commitments -- like "Battleship" -- to direct the long-awaited adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune." As they say in the book however, the Spice must flow. And flow it will, as Paramount has hired a new director to step in for Berg.

The new blood is Pierre Morel, according to a report from EW's Hollywood Insider. director of "Taken," the movie in which -- as MTV Newsroom editor Kyle Anderson puts in -- Liam Neeson shoots the entire population of France in the face. Morel also directed the parkour-flavored "District B13" and the upcoming John Travolta-starring action flick, "From Paris With Love," and he served as the cinematographer on popcorn action fare like "The Transporter," "War" and "Unleashed."

EW also reports that Paramount is on the hunt for a new writer, »

Measuring 'Avatar' Star Sam Worthington Against 'Titanic' Star Leonardo DiCaprio

From MTV.Com: At first glance, the pair would seem to be miles apart. Leonardo DiCaprio is arguably the biggest movie star in the world, a three-time Oscar nominee in the prime of his career, a fiercely private all-American actor whose name can get any script the green light. Sam Worthington is an endearingly outspoken British/Australian veteran roughly the same age, positioned as "the next big thing" for some time and only now breaking through with a series of high-profile flicks.

To some, however, history may be repeating itself. A little more than a decade after DiCaprio became a household name with "Titanic," a billion dollars' worth of moviegoers have now seen Worthington's face in "Avatar." With that in mind, here are three reasons why King of the World James Cameron might be once again playing kingmaker — and three others why Sam will never reach Leo's heights:

'The Final Destination' Gets In Your Face, It's Raining Meatballs And More, In The DVD Report For January 5

It's the first Tuesday of a new year, and coming out of the Christmas buying season it's a pretty slow week for new releases. Only two theatrical titles make their bow, along with a few catalog and television titles. This is the DVD Report for Tuesday, January 5.

The venerable "Final Destination" franchise had already gone through three films by 2006, and understandably the producers wanted to shake things up for the next volume. They did that by entering the world of 3-D. The film series, which finds young folks having premonitions of death that come true for people around them, is known for concocting outlandish death scenes (roller coaster accident, a race car careening into the crowd, etc.). So it was only natural to take it to the next level by literally throwing these bizarre tragedies into audience's faces with 3-D.

"The Final Destination" comes to Blu-ray and DVD equipped with those red-and-blue glasses, »

See A 6-Year-Old Amanda Bynes In Today's Daily TwitPic

Amanda Bynes isn't a regular visitor on our Twitter-Wood feed, but she pops up from time to time. She's probably best known for her now-finished TV work on the WB series "What I Like About You" and the Nick comedy series "All That." Bynes also had keys roles in "She's the Man" and the 2007 "Hairspray" remake. She's been pretty quiet recently, but you'll next get to see her in "Easy A," a comedy starring Bynes, Emma Stone, Stanley Tucci and "Twilight" star Cam Gigandet

In today's Daily TwitPic you get to see Bynes at the tender age of 6. This was just a few short years before she joined the cast of "All That" in 1996. In the pic, you can see Bynes and her brother Tommy hanging out in what look like barber chairs aboard their father's old Navy ship (not to be confused with an Old Navy ship). Check out the picture after the jump. »

Jason Mewes, 'Super' And 'Empire Records 2' In Today's Twitter-Wood

4 January 2010 3:30 PM, PST

Kevin Smith hit his Twitter account hard today in response to a comment made by Neil Patrick Harris about Smith's pal and frequent collaborator Jason Mewes. The discussion is summarized as neatly as possible in the three retweets I picked out, but you'd be well served to sift through the questions Smith has been answering all day. Nph chimed in later in the day on his own account with an apology.

In other Twitter-Wood exchanges today, Edgar Wright and Bryan Lee O'Malley teased their unreleased trailer for "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" and Brian Lynch and Diablo Cody pondered a mad plot to craft an "Empire Records" sequel. Check out those posts below along with a shot of Amanda Bynes at 9 years old and a run-in between Terry Gilliam and Salman Rushdie. Our Favorite Performances From Sandra Bullock, The Top-Earning Star Of 2009

4 January 2010 3:00 PM, PST

Sandra Bullock had herself a kickass 2009. "The Proposal" and "The Blind Side" were massive hits, enough to make the sour cherry on top that was "All About Steve" a non-entity. The two big ones have grossed more than $500 million in ticket sales so far, and "The Blind Side" has yet to even see anything more than a domestic opening. The success was enough for a survey of movie theater execs to paint the star as the top-earning performer of 2009, according to /Film.

Not too shabby for an actress who was last seen in the 2007 thriller "The Premonition," which boasts a lowly 8% rating on RottenTomatoes. Is it really so surprising though? Clunkers like "Premonition" aside, Bullock has had more than her share of fine performances. Given her recent honors, we felt it would be fun to run through some of our favorites...
