'Spider-Man 4' Sources Confirm Release Date Uncertain, Script Still In Progress
8 hours ago
Last month, a report hit the 'Net that "Spider-Man 4" production had been put on "indefinite hold" due to problems with the script — specifically, the choice of villain for the next chapter in the Sony Pictures franchise. Asked for comment on the report, the studio confirmed that production had indeed halted for the holidays, but denied that there was anything endangering the project's production schedule. Now, it seems, the story has changed yet again.
According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, production continues to be stalled on "Spider-Man 4" due to a difference of opinion between director Sam Raimi and the studio over the film's script, and now the film could miss the mark for its intended May 5, 2011, release date.
This report has been partially confirmed to MTV News by an informed source close to the film who said a May 2011 premiere has now become uncertain, and significant work is »

Poor "Preacher." For such a beloved comic book property, it sure has gone through a number of woes on the road from comic to live-screen adaptation, with the latest snag possibly arriving in the form of director Sam Mendes.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendes, the man currently attached to take the reins on "Preacher," is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise, with hopes for filming to start as early as June of this year.
Mendes landing the job is a decisive victory for Bond fans, who just recently suffered through a rumor that the latest film would be delayed due to financial difficulties at MGM. But if the deal goes through, what exactly does it mean for Mendes' involvement with "Preacher" and the film's future as a whole?

Preview: 'Conan: The Weight Of The Crown' By Darick Robertson
10 hours ago
Over the course of his comics career, Darick Robertson has tackled outlaw journalists, morally depraved superheroes, an X-Man, and the most famous gun-slinging vigilante around — but his next project harkens back to a time before his resume was filled with some of the most popular characters of the last few decades.
Next week, the co-creator of "Transmetropolitan" and "The Boys" turns his eye to Robert E. Howard's famous barbarian, Conan, in a one-shot story that he scripted and drew, titled "Conan: The Weight Of The Crown."
MTV News caught up with Robertson to find out where his Conan tale takes the bloodthirsty Cimmerian, and why he'll leave a host of bodies in his wake this time. Dark Horse Comics has also provided Splash Page readers with an exclusive preview of "Conan: The Weight Of The Crown."
"I was half-bluffing," laughed Robertson when asked how he first pitched the »

'Cowboys And Aliens' To Begin Shooting This July, Possibly In 3-D?
News regarding the adaptation of Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley's "Cowboys and Aliens" has put fans of the sci-fi western source material on something of a seesaw since the property was optioned a few years back. From "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau's tenuous-seeming involvement to various ongoing casting rumors to producers and screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof's admission to moving away from the original storyline, it's been hard to get much of a lock on the project.
According to The Daily Beast, however, there's a few details fans can count on: Favreau is on board to direct and the Dreamworks film begins shooting this July.
Of course, there's still a bit of room for speculation, with Tdb wondering if the more than $1 billion to-date box office success of James Cameron's "Avatar" might entice filmmakers to render "Cowboys and Aliens" in 3-D.

'Iron Man 2,' Tila Tequila, And David Finch In Today's Twitter Report
13 hours ago
Upcoming projects and announcements were all the rage in the Twitter Report feed this morning. Jon Favreau got together with his "Iron Man 2" leading man Robert Downey Jr. at his office, David Finch was announced as exclusive to DC (which Rob Liefeld says will make him the star of 2010). and Brian Michael Bendis and Bryan Hitch discussed a mature "Power Pack" collaboration that is highly suspect.
Not all of the info pouring was good, though. Actually, Chuck Bb's tweet about Tila Tequila had me quite baffled until I realized both that she was engaged to Casey Johnson and that Johnson was the heiress to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. Tequila's fiancée passed away Monday, as I found out during a follow-up search. Check out those retweets after the jump along with Ryan North's discovery of "Invincible," which NFL team Christos Gage is going to see this weekend, and some sternly worded advice from Karl Kerschl. »

Preview: 'The Authority' Heads Into Space With New Lineup And Creative Team!
Wildstorm's superhero series "The Authority" has passed through several prominent writers' hands in the past, including Warren Ellis, Mark Millar and Grant Morrison, but the latest writing duo of Marc Bernardin and Adam Freeman might be facing the greatest challenge of them all: taking "The Authority" home.
Bernardin spoke with MTV News about his upcoming run on "The Authority" with Freeman, revealing that the basic premise of the upcoming story arc focuses on the superhero team dealing with the fallout of the "World's End" storyline that involved the Authority's massive spaceship, The Carrier, crashing into the middle of London. Given that cataclysmic aftermath, there is literally nowhere left for the Authority to go but up.
Read on for an exclusive preview of "The Authority" #18 and more details about the creative team's plans for their run.

Who Is This Mystery Character?
Looks like it's time to flex your comics cred, folks. Idw Publishing dropped a mysterious image on us last night, and challenged Splash Page readers to guess the character featured in the design sketches.
"We thought we would get things started with a little guessing game — as in, guess who this is," teased the accompanying message. "It's a character from a series that's starting this month."
One of the most obvious clues regarding the character's identity is the red lapel pin that seems to be the logo for C.O.B.R.A., the sworn enemies of G.I. Joe. Could it be a new Cobra Commander? Could the pin be a red herring? Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think!

'Iron Man 2' Special: War Machine Creator Addresses 'Iron Man' Casting Change And Jim Rhodes' Debut
18 hours ago
Editor's Note: With 2009 behind us and "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — continuing with today's discussion of Jim Rhodes' debut in the first "Iron Man" and the switch from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle for the sequel.
Over the last 30 years, Bob Layton and David Michelinie have earned a reputation as one of the definitive “Iron Man” creative teams. And according to Layton, his status preceded him when he met Robert Downey Jr. on the set of “Iron Man 2” last summer.
“When I was on the set of ‘Iron Man 2’, Robert Downey Jr. was like 'What did you think? Were you happy?'" Layton told MTV News. »

Final Cover For 'Kick-Ass' Movie Book Revealed
4 January 2010 3:29 PM, PST
Last month, we got a look inside the upcoming "Kick-Ass" movie book, including some new art from the comic book series' co-creator, John Romita Jr., that might end up in the film. Now, we finally have a look at the final cover for the book, which as longtime readers might recall, went through a few revisions early in 2009.
Along with providing an up-close look at the results of its hero's crime-fighting ambitions, the new cover provided by publisher Titan Books also manages to give some face time to the story's other costumed vigilantes, Big Daddy (played by Nicolas Cage), The Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz). And like the film itself, the cover image appears to pay homage to the film's faithfulness to the comic by integrating Romita's art with photo images of the cast.
The "Kick-Ass" movie book currently has no release date scheduled.

Fan-Made War Machine Earns Nod From 'Iron Man 2' Director Jon Favreau
4 January 2010 2:31 PM, PST
Cosplay is not an uncommon act in the comic book community, though it's usually relegated to events such as Comic-Con International. But that's not stopping one fan from getting his "Iron Man" suit on early.
As posted on Jon Favreau's Twitter account, the "Iron Man 2" director has apparently discovered the creation of a fan-made War Machine costume, designed after the armor worn by Don Cheadle in the upcoming Marvel Studios film.
While the various technology-heavy weaponry featured on the costume isn't exactly operational — I sure hope it isn't, at least — the suit, designed by Anthony Le, is nonetheless an impressive feat.
Le lists a whole host of specs for the costume, including "repulsor gauntlets," laser-equipped "wrist rockets," an arch reactor that's "accurate" to the movie and a "Mini Gun simulated fire and drop lock system w/ laser." Like I said, I can only hope that these weapons aren't »

'Doctor Who' Finale, 'Avatar' Vs. 'The Ant Bully,' And Batman's Cowl In Today's Twitter Report
4 January 2010 1:31 PM, PST
Viewers on both sides of the Atlantic have been sounding off about David Tennant's send-off from "Doctor Who" in the two-part "The End of Time" story that concluded last week. "Dw" comic creators Tony Lee and Pia Guerra were among them.
"Avatar" is still on everyone's minds as well, though, with the film globally passing the $1 billion mark. Comics industry tweeters have been pointing out similarities to "The Last Samurai" and "Dances With Wolves" for a while, but Pj Holden was the first I've seen who drew a parallel between James Cameron's film and "The Ant Bully." Check out his retweeted assessment after the jump along with Erik Larsen on Neal Adams' Batman cowl, some Mike Oemming "Powers" pages and Marc Bernardin's bold statement about "The Hobbit."

Marvel President Describes 'Thor' Costume Tests
4 January 2010 11:01 AM, PST
With director Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of “Thor” scheduled to begin filming later this month, further updates from the set have begun to spring up online.
“To be honest the thing that I'm most excited about right now though, is the screen test we just finished for ‘Thor’, related Marvel President Kevin Feige in a retrospective on Marvel’s feature films posted on Marvel.com. “We've done some costume tests and watching the Asgardians walk onto the sound stage takes me back to that first time I saw the X-Men on the set all together in Toronto. Only it was unlike anything we've ever put on film before!"
"It's great to be starting the next decade in such an exciting way just as we did last decade," he continued. "We're really redefining the comic book genre and what a Marvel movie can be. It's going to be great.”

Disney Acquires Stake In Stan Lee's Entertainment Company
4 January 2010 8:29 AM, PST
As if The Walt Disney Company's approved acquisition of Marvel Entertainment wasn't a satisfying enough victory for the House of Mouse, Disney has also bolstered its partnership with one of Marvel's single most iconic creators — none other than Stan Lee.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has acquired a 10-percent stake of Lee's Pow Entertainment for $2.5 million. As part of the deal, Disney is acquiring "exclusive consulting services" from Pow as well as the "enhanced rights" to the company's creative side.
At this time, specific details on the nature of Pow and Disney's new deal aren't entirely known — but rest assured, Lee himself is a very happy camper.
Over the weekend, the Pow Entertainment founder spoke about the deal on Twitter, suggesting that Disney must have realized the influence that Lee's 35,000 followers must have.
"[Maybe], when we hit 100,000, Disney'll host our party," the acclaimed comic book writer declared. "But one thing at a time. »

'Iron Man 2' Special: From Jim Rhodes To War Machine With Creator Bob Layton
4 January 2010 7:01 AM, PST
Editor's Note: With 2009 behind us and "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — starting with today's chat about the origins of War Machine and the man under the armor, James "Rhodey" Rhodes.
In over 40 years of “Iron Man” comics, few creators have been more influential than Bob Layton and David Michelinie. The long-time collaborators have co-written almost 100 issues of “Iron Man” over the course of the series.
Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes (a.k.a. War Machine) is perhaps their most significant contribution to the “Iron Man” mythos. Created in "Iron Man" #118 with artist John Byrne, Rhodes was originally introduced as a soldier who helped Tony Stark escape from behind enemy lines »

Michael Cera Describes 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World' Action Sequence, Doesn't Expect A Sequel
4 January 2010 6:01 AM, PST
It's hard to imagine Michael Cera as an action star, particularly when his "Arrested Development" character couldn't even catch a mop. Still, the young actor will get his chance at combat in the lead role of "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," Edgar Wright's upcoming adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's comic book series.
Cera spoke with Collider about his work on "Scott Pilgrim," which he described as "a pretty smooth transition" from his romantic comedy roles thanks to the physical training provided during pre-production.
But even Cera can't help himself from marveling at some of the action scenes in "Scott Pilgrim," particularly one that takes place between two of his co-stars.
"There's an amazing fight between Mae Whitman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead where they're using these weapons, and it's really amazingly done," Cera said of the sequence that pits Roxy Richter and Ramona Flowers against one another. "And, there are some other things, »
