'Yogi Bear' Movie Adds Justin Timberlake, Dan Aykroyd And Anna Faris

6 November 2009 2:31 PM, PST

From Movies Blog: Remember kids, the truth is always far, far stranger than fiction. It was a little more than a year ago that we found out the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series "Yogi Bear" would be getting a big screen treatment. There was no casting announced or anything like that; just that the project was happening with "Surf's Up" director Ash Brannon at the helm and that it would feature a mix of live-action and CG animation.

Well today, the plot thickened. Variety reports that Anna Faris, Justin Timberlake and Dan Aykroyd are all in negotiations to join the cast of the movie, which will now be directed by "Journey to the Center of the Earth" helmer Eric Brevig from a script by Brad Copeland ("Wild Hogs").

Lionsgate Launches Official 'Kick-Ass' Movie Site

6 November 2009 1:47 PM, PST

Earlier today we got our first peek at a new set of "Kick-Ass" movie posters featuring the film's costumed vigilantes, and now Lionsgate has launched the official website for the big-screen adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar's ultraviolent comic book series.

Debuting today at iamkick-ass.com, the site doesn't offer much at the moment aside from a look at the same four images from the new posters and a countdown to the "Kick-Ass" trailer debut—which will apparently hit MySpace.com on November 15 at 1 Am Est.

However, the site does feature a cool introductory animation that sweeps through the city on its way up to the quartet of costumed characters perched on a ledge.

"Kick-Ass" is scheduled to hit theaters on April 16, featuring Aaron Johnson as superhero-wannabe Dave Lizewski, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as copycat "hero" The Red Mist, Nicolas Cage and Chloe Moretz as the father-daughter vigilante team »

'Sin City 2' Producer Options Joe Casey's 'Full Moon Fever' And John Romita Jr.'s 'The Gray Area'

6 November 2009 1:01 PM, PST

Sin City 2” producer Stephen L'Heureux’s Solipsist Films has picked up the options for two more comic book adaptations: Joe Casey and Caleb Gerard’s “Full Moon Fever” and Glen Brunswick and John Romita Jr.’s “The Gray Area.”

According to Mania.com, Casey and Brunswick are both attached to adapt their respective titles.

Full Moon Fever” was originally published as a graphic novel in 2005 by AiT/PlanetLar. The story follows an interstellar plumber—or “lunar waste disposal technician”—named Zeke Kirby who encounters a werewolf on a moon-based space station. Director Renny Harlin optioned “Full Moon Fever” a month before it was published, but the rights subsequently reverted to Casey.

"It's a lot like 'Alien' and 'Aliens'. It's fast-paced and really fun," said L'Heureux.

Brunswick and Romita Jr.’s “The Gray Area” was first published as a three-issue miniseries by Image Comics back in 2005. The series follows a »

Is John Cusack Chasing A 'Preacher' Role?

6 November 2009 12:16 PM, PST

With all the hub-bub surrounding the 20th anniversary of "Say Anything," it seems a little weird to think of actor John Cusack as a potential lead for "Preacher," Sam Mendes' in-development adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's very adult-oriented comic book series. However, that could indeed be the one comic book movie he's chasing these days—or something very similar to it.

In an interview with io9, Cusack described a comic book movie floating around Hollywood that he's trying to get involved with—and the description sounds an awful lot like a certain story about an ex-Preacher, his trigger-happy girlfriend and a vampire who set out to teach God a lesson.

"It's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story," said Cusack.

Asked whether it "Preacher" he was thinking of, Cusack said, "I think it might have been 'Preacher, »

'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' Musical Casts Peter Parker And Lead Villain Amid More Troubles

6 November 2009 11:31 AM, PST

The production of the upcoming Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” continues to spin a tangled web. Sources close to the producers claim that the budget has soared to $52 million—more than twice the cost of the “Lord of the Rings” musical which debuted in 2006 as one of the most expensive musicals ever – and at least $24 million is still needed to get the show off the ground.

According to The L.A. Times, if “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” doesn't premiere by the end of April, the license from Marvel will expire in addition to missing the deadline to enter next year’s Tony Awards.

Despite the continuing financial peril, U2 bandmates Bono and the Edge—who collaborated on the songs for “Spider-Man”—insist that the show will still happen. "The visuals and the music are amazing, and that's what will matter," said Bono.

6 November 2009 10:59 AM, PST

From Movies Blog: Tolkien-ites freaked out over the fate of "The Hobbit" – when's it gonna start shooting? Will the studio's financial implosion affect production? Um, the movies are still happening, right?! – received a much-needed boost last month from Ian McKellen, who revealed he'd actually read the script.

MTV News had a chance to chat with Sir Ian while he was promoting his AMC mini-series, "The Prisoner," and the actor behind Gandalf the Grey revealed some more details—and clarified others—that keep the Tolkien boosts coming.

Stan Lee On 'Thor,' 'Micronauts' In IMAX And Danish 'Scott Pilgrim' In Today's Twitter Report

6 November 2009 10:01 AM, PST

Someone appears to have finally told Stan Lee that Anthony Hopkins will play Odin in "Thor," and he had a thing or two to tweet about it, including what he would like to do in the film when it comes out in 2011. Also on the Marvel movie front, "Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau expressed dismay over the effect "World of Warcraft" could have on his editing process.

Elsewhere, Bryan Lee O'Malley shared a look at the new Danish-translated "Scott Pilgrim" volume he received, as well as some on-the-fly Google interpretation of Danish. You can find all those tweets after the jump along with Dan Slott on "Micronauts," Jim Lee on the passing of Halloween and a rad custom Mockingbird action figure.

Exclusive: Green Arrow 'Super Max' Movie Isn't Threatened By 'Supermax' Horror, Says David Goyer

6 November 2009 8:32 AM, PST

Earlier in the year, David Goyer provided a much-needed update on "Super Max"—the Green Arrow-centric movie that would feature DC's Emerald Archer wrongfully imprisoned in a maximum security jail for supervillains—by saying that a new writer would be coming aboard the project.

Shortly thereafter, however, a potential game-changer came in the form of "Supermax," an almost identically titled horror project with a very similar premise to Goyer's planned film. Given that news, we recently explained why "Super Max" should be a priority for the newly formed DC Entertainment..

But according to Goyer, the arrival of "Supermax" isn't necessarily the end for Oliver Queen's prison sentence.

"Not necessarily," Goyer told MTV News when asked if "Supermax" was a threat to his own similarly titled project. "I don't think they're mutually exclusive."

While Goyer hasn't given up hope on "Super Max," the filmmaker did say that movement on the project has slowed down, »

New 'Kick-Ass' Posters Hit The 'Net

6 November 2009 7:29 AM, PST

A quartet of new posters from "Kick-Ass," Matthew Vaughn's big-screen adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s ultra-violent comic book series, have arrived online.

The four posters feature images of the film's costumed vigilantes: The Red Mist (played by Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson), Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) and Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage). Each character is poised on a rooftop, facing away from the camera, and the four posters form a skyline view when aligned.

Click on the image below to see a gallery of the four new "Kick-ass" movie posters.

Previously, we heard from Mintz-Plasse and co-star Clark Duke about the research (or lack thereof) they had to do for their roles in the much-anticipated film. Now that the project has received distribution from Lionsgate and has a release date set (April 16, 2010), fans who have been eagerly awaiting the film can finally look forward to seeing »

J.J. Abrams In Talks For 'Micronauts' Movie

6 November 2009 6:32 AM, PST

The Transformers and G.I. Joe have had their time to shine, now "Star Trek" director and "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams could be granting these franchises' action-figure forebearers a chance at the big time.

According to The Wall Street Journal Abrams is currently in discussions with Hasbro to produce a Micronauts film, the latest in a line of properties the toy company has optioned.

Hasbro recently acquired the rights to the Micronauts from Japanese originators Takara. Originally marketed under the Microman banner, the interchangeable-style action figures were imported by the now-defunct Mego toy company in 1976, later to be revived by Palisades Toys in 2002.

Of course, this isn't Hasbro's first partnership with Takara. Back in 1984 the toy companies essentially transitioned their shape-changing Micronauts and Diaclone toy lines into what would come to be known as the Transformers.

Exclusive: Sam Rockwell Explains What Inspired His 'Iron Man 2' Character

5 November 2009 4:11 PM, PST

Way back in May, we gave actor Sam Rockwell one of his first looks at Justin Hammer, his "Iron Man 2" character, when we gave him an issue of the comic book during an interview that occurred a few months after he was cast in the blockbuster sequel. When MTV Movies Editor Josh Horowitz recently sat down with Rockwell, he was able to offer us a bit more info about his character—specifically, his relationship with Don Cheadle's character, James "Rhodey" Rhodes.

He also revealed what sort of research he did after that earlier meeting and where he drew his inspiration for Tony Stark's rival.

"I got some research—they sent me over some stuff," Rockwell told MTV News. "I looked it over and that was about it."

"I kind of took my own ideas from other things," he added. "A little bit of Lex Luthor stuff—[Kevin] Spacey and [Gene] Hackman. »

David Goyer Explains Marc Guggenheim's Exit From 'FlashForward' TV Series

5 November 2009 3:41 PM, PST

From Movies Blog: A few weeks back, Marc Guggenheim departed his role as co-showrunner of "FlashForward," leaving the job solely to co-creator David Goyer. The move came as a surprise to many, considering the critical approval that the show has received. Goyer himself touts tonight's episode as the best installment yet. Sure there are challenges, but that is true of every show on television.

Many have wondered how Guggenheim's exit might effect the upcoming slate of episodes. Goyer has a great background in film and TV; his writing on Chris Nolan's "Batman" films revived the ailing franchise and he executive produced the underrated TV series "Threshold." "FlashForward" is his biggest TV project yet, but he brings a lot of experience to the table and will be fine without Guggenheim.

Besides, Goyer told MTV in a recent interview that the departure was hardly a surprise—indeed, it was always part of the plan. »

Transformers Invade Australia (Very, Very Slowly)

5 November 2009 2:46 PM, PST

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" already arrived on DVD and Blu-Ray here in the U.S., but it looks like the Autobots are doing a bit of world-traveling these days to promote its release elsewhere. At least, that's what some images from Australia that recently popped up on the 'Net would seem to indicate.

Bumblebee was seen floating around in the general vicinity of the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bride in the gallery of photos you can check out by clicking on the photo above. And while we're not entirely sure why he was out there, the people of Sydney should certainly feel safe knowing that they're safe from the menace of giant robots... for now. »

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Catwoman In 'Batman 3'?

5 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST

In all likelihood, we're still quite a ways off from any real news regarding a third "Batman" movie from director Christopher Nolan—if he's even returning to the franchise, that is—but that's not stopping us from wondering which Dark Knight villain we should see in the inevitable sequel.

There's no shortage of rogues to choose from, but the one I think is an absolute necessity is Catwoman. Given the state of Bruce Wayne's life after the events of "The Dark Knight," this feels like the perfect time to introduce Selina Kyle—the woman who could either help mend Bruce's fences, or bring all of the walls tumbling down.

If Nolan, David Goyer and the other folks at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. decide to go the Catwoman route, I think that these five actresses would be great for the role.

The Yankees, Guy Fawkes Day And New Jim Lee Art In Today's Twitter Report

5 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST

Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.

Jon Favreau, it seems, didn't have time to commemorate anything last night, as he was hard at work editing "Iron Man 2." If he was following Joe Quesada or Matt Fraction, however, he probably kept up on the game's details just fine. Scope out all of those posts below, along with a new Jim Lee page and Geoff Johns' mystery project that he wants to work with Greg Rucka on.

It's all in the Twitter Report for November 5, 2009.

Exclusive: Zack Whedon Reveals Dr. Horrible's Origin—And We Have Your First Look!

5 November 2009 9:29 AM, PST

We all know last year's award-winning online musical "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is getting a sequel at some point, but just in case you can't wait for the next chapter of Nathan Fillion and Neil Patrick Harris' hilarious (and occasionally heartbreaking) battle, a prequel of sorts arrives this month courtesy of Dark Horse Comics.

Written by Zack Whedon (who co-wrote the "Dr. Horrible" musical with brothers Joss and Jed and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen), the one-shot "Dr. Horrible" comic tells the tale of Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer's first encounter.

I spoke to Whedon about his plans for the project and received an exclusive preview for Splash Page readers.

"It's a prequel to the web series, and you get to see his first of many embarrassing encounters with Captain Hammer," Whedon said of the 24-page story, which hits shelves November 18. "But the web series is really an origin story too, »

Remember, Remember The 5th Of November: Celebrate Guy Fawkes Day With 'V For Vendetta'

5 November 2009 8:21 AM, PST

Do you remember, remember, the fifth of November? Aside from being the day after the New York Yankees won the 2009 World Series, it's also widely known as Guy Fawkes Day—a day that has some significance not just for our revolutionary-minded readers, but also for comic book fans in general thanks to Alan Moore's "V For Vendetta."

Guy Fawkes, a 17th century revolutionary, attempted to blow up England's Parliament building on November 5, 1605, in what is now commonly referred to as as the Gunpowder Plot. After getting caught, tortured and subsequently executed by British authorities, Fawkes' efforts and likeness became immortalized through parables, rhymes and other such stories—including comic books.

Moore's "V For Vendetta"—the graphic novel that inspired James McTeigue's 2005 film starring Hugo Weaving and Natalie Portman—focuses on a vigilante named V that's taken more than a few cues from the long-deceased Fawkes, including the constant »

John C. Reilly And Mary-Louise Parker In Talks To Join 'Red' Cast

5 November 2009 7:41 AM, PST

"Walk Hard" star John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds") are reportedly in negotiations to join the cast of “Red”, an adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s miniseries created in 2003 for Wildstorm.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reilly would portray a retired CIA agent who is paranoid that everyone is out to kill him while Parker would play a federal pension worker who is romantically involved with Bruce Willis’ lead character and becomes entangled in his struggle to evade the high-tech assassins out to kill him. Morgan Freeman is also attached to play a leading role.

“Red” appears to be picking up steam as it heads in front of the cameras in January. Earlier this week, it was announced that Helen Mirren has been cast in a role rumored to be the former handler of Willis’ character. The film is also tentatively scheduled to be released in November »

'Sin City' Producer Bringing 'Almighty' To The Big Screen

5 November 2009 6:58 AM, PST

Ed Laroche’s graphic novel “Almighty” has been optioned by “Sin City” producer Stephen L'Heureux’s Solipsist Films.

According to Mania, “Black Hawk Down” screenwriter Ken Nolan is also attached to adapt the script and “Almighty” is already being shown to potential directors.

Created, written and drawn by Laroche, “Almighty” takes place in 2098 and follows Fale, a female mercenary who is hired to rescue a girl from kidnappers and bring her home safely across the dangerous terrain of a "third world America" that has descended into neo-tribalism.

According to Laroche, Fale is a departure from the standard female action hero—embodied in recent years by Kate Beckinsale’s Selene from the “Underworld” film series and numerous Milla Jovovich movies like “Resident Evil” and “Ultraviolet.”

"I don't see a five foot four, hundred and ten pound girl kicking everybody's ass in that role, and then she's pretty too, on top of it, »
