Review: ‘A Christmas Carol’

Charles Dickens purists, fear not. Robert Zemeckis remains faithful to the beloved tale, all the while putting his own spin on the story. This version is a little more exciting, and a lot more sinister than previous outings (it also happens to be in 3D), but I loved it.
I don’t think I really need to spend much time on the plot. Everyone knows the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the original curmudgeon who hates everyone and everything and is just downright unpleasant. One Christmas Eve, he is visited by four ghosts; his former business partner Marley; the ghost of Christmas past, the ghost of Christmas present, and the ghost of Christmas future.

Preview of Top Cow’s ‘Tracker’ First Issue

Our friends at Top Cow have provides us with a sneak peek at their upcoming comic Tracker — which hits store shelves next week. The comic tells the story of Alex O’Roark, the FBI’s top tracker, who has his perfect life ripped to shreds when a case to capture the world’s most dangerous serial killer leads him straight into the maw of a werewolf.
Now, keeping his secret from his gorgeous fiancé and the FBI, he must hunt down the wolf that infected him before the disease turns him into a monster. Hey, how many time has that happen to you, right?
All kidding aside, this comic looks pretty cool and has some great art by Francis Tsai. Plus, combining two things I really like, FBI action and werewolves, can’t be a bad thing either.

New Extended Trailer for ‘The Killer Inside Me’

Casey Affleck has been known to take some pretty intense roles as of late. His first being the role of Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James and then his work on his brother’s project, Gone Baby Gone. It looks like Affleck is going to step it up once again as Sheriff Lou Ford in the ultra-violent The Killer Inside Me.
The film is based on the novel by Jim Thompson, who also wrote the novels films such as The Grifters and The Getaway were adapted from. The original 1976 film starred Stacey Keach, who took on the role that Affleck is now running with.
The extended trailer shows off some of the intense moments (hopefully not all) from the film, such as some raunchy aggressive sex with both Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson, as well as a violent murder of one of them. This may just be the »

Game Review: ‘WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010′ for XBox 360

Thq brings back its yearly moneymaker WWE SmackDown vs. Raw with a revised visual look to the game and brand new Create-a-Story mode. Since its inception on the Playstation in 2000, SmackDown has been an annual franchise that has continuously worked to improve itself with updated graphics, gameplay, new match types and, most importantly, user customization.
Taking pages from some real life WWE programming in its story mode while keeping as up to date a roster as possible with each iteration, there is an instant appeal for sports entertainment fans to pick up this game and play out the role of their favorite superstar or their own custom creation.

The gameplay of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is very similar to the previous years. Players move their wrestler with the left analog stick, use the right stick to lock up in to a grapple and use various combinations to perform specific moves. »

Fan Film Friday: ‘Titular Movie Lines’

We here at The Flickcast are fans of just about all films, but some of us around the office still get tickled when we hear the titular line in a film thrown out. Many comedy series have spoofed this concept, such as Upright Citizens Brigade with “I’m sick of all these Star Wars!” or Family Guy with “That’s why they call me Superman 4: The Quest For Peace” but nobody has ever gone to the length’s of this week’s Fan Film Friday Creator.
The cool cats over at VideoGum put together a pretty impressive compilation of just about every film that uses the title in dialogue. From Fried Green Tomatoes to Minority Report, this compilation has it all. It makes you wonder if the writers are being clever with that line, or actually really lazy.

Brand New ‘Modern Warfare 2′ Launch Trailer

There’s not much more to be said about the upcoming Modern Warfare 2 game that I haven’t said already. Until I get a copy to talk a look at and can play it for more than ten minutes, as I did at a recent event, I can only go by what I’ve seen so far. And so far, what I can say is that the game looks awesome!
I think you would agree, judging from the other information we’ve brought you about the game previously, that Modern Warfare 2 looks to be the game to beat this holiday season. Now, thanks to our friends at Activision (you know who you are) we can bring you the new launch trailer for the game featuring all the modern warfare, helicopters, gunfights, explosions and kick-ass action you’ve come to expect from this franchise and that this game delivers in spades. »

Review: ‘The Fourth Kind’

The Fourth Kind is a polarizing movie that is arriving in theaters after a clever but somewhat controversial promotional campaign. Whether you like the movie or not is largely going to depend on whether you buy into what you see on the screen. I didn’t, but I absolutely believe many people will. As actress Milla Jovovich (as herself) says in an intro to the movie: “What you believe is yours to decide.”
The unconventional film begins with Jovovich explaining there have been several people that have disappeared in Nome, Alaska, since the 60’s. She explains that she will be portraying Dr. Abigail Tyler, who has actual video footage of alien encounters. Seems that while she was placing some patients under hypnosis (for a sleep study) she uncovers some shocking truths about what has been happening to them at night, and why they are so freaked out. Brand New ‘Kick Ass’ Posters Hit The Web

Things have been pretty quiet on the Kick-Ass front since the bootleg trailer hit the web right after San Diego Comic-Con back in July. Lionsgate recently picked up the distribution rights to the Matthew Vaughn film based on the Mark Millar comic series.
We’ve now got a bit more to chew on until the April release date, as a series of character posters has gone live, and we’ve got them for your viewing pleasure. Each of the posters show off the main characters of the film, Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage), Hit-Girl (Chloe Moretz), and Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson)
The film is based on a comic where superheroes aren’t real (go figure) and one nerdy, wallflower high school kid decides to take crime fighting into his own hands and don the persona of “Kick-Ass.”

Old Navy Giving Away ‘Lego Rock Band’ With $20 Purchase

Whenever you think about video games, the first place you think of picking them up is Old Navy, right? Probably wrong. But this Black Friday will change everything.
Kotaku reports that your favorite Performance Fleece retailer will be giving away free copies of Lego Rock Band with every $20 purchase this November 27th. In addition, Old Navy will give out free guitar controllers with every purchase of Rock Band 2.
This deal is only available on Black Friday, while supplies last. Stores opens at the ungodly hour of 3 Am, so you’ll have to be up pretty early to be sure to get your chance at this rockin’ sale.
Old Navy won’t be the only retailer trying new things to get customers in the door on Black Friday, so keep your eyes peeled for more interesting combinations.

Behind the Scenes of Marvel’s ‘Astonishing X-Men’

Excelsior! Sorry, couldn’t resist. Actually, that word completely applies in this case seeing as how the X-Men were created by the great Stan “The Man” Lee and Jack “King” Kirby. Still, its a pretty good day today and a pretty cool thing we have to share with you right now.
Our pals at Marvel have provided us with a new video showing a bit of behind the scenes with the folks who make the Astonishing X-Men motion comic. Hosted by producer Kristine Stone, you get a tour of the production facility and get to meet many of the people responsible for putting this cool project together. All in all, not a bad way to spend a few minutes.
You get to learn some things and have a little fun too. What could be better than that? Not much, so be sure to check out the video after the jump. »

Cortney’s TV Digest: What’s On In November

It’s getting colder and darker every day (at least in my part of the world), so it’s certainly time to curl up on the couch with some apple cider and some great TV, or at least that’s what I’ll be doing! While November brings us very few new TV shows, this month’s edition of Cortney’s TV Digest will let you know everything that’s going on with your favorite shows, no matter if they just premiered or have been with us for awhile.

A reimagining of the 80’s classic TV mini-series, V tells the tale of aliens who have landed on Earth in peace, but secretly have sinister motives. Starring Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Scott Wolf, V premiered November 3rd to big ratings and will run for four weeks.
It will then go on hiatus, returning in March 2010 to finish the season. »

New Clip From This Week’s Venture Bros. – ‘Return to Malice’

Last week, we brought you an exclusive preview clip of that week’s Venture Bros. episode “Perchance to Dean.” Now, we’re doing the same thing with this week’s episode, entitled “Return to Malice,” which looks to be a bit Monarch-centric.
Though Adult Swim is running the episode out of order (the season premiere was actually the sixth episode in this season), this episode is technically the third. According to Adult Swim, the episode looks like we’ll finally get a sweet Henchman 21 story.
In the aftermath of the death of his best friend, Henchman 21 has rededicated his life to become the most feared and skilled of all of the Monarch’s Henchmen. But tonight, all bets are off as Henchman 21 begins the hunt for the murderer of Henchman 24. Alliances shift, secrets are revealed, and the Venture brothers are kidnapped. Again.

William Shatner Reads Levi Johnston’s Tweets on ‘The Tonight Show’

A few months ago, legendary actor known for playing himself (and a certain starship Captain), William Shatner, made a special appearance on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to read Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin’s resignation speech. It was pretty epic, and you can relive it over here.
Last night, Shatner returned to the show, this time to read the impossibly intelligent tweets of Levi Johnston, the 19 year old baby daddy to Palin’s granddaughter — a development that may have been one of the reasons why she and McCain lost the Presidential election. His tweets are pretty painful, but given his accidental celebrity status, that makes them all the more funny.
Shatner made sure that everybody knew just how poetic Johnston could be, in a tribute poem. Check out the video after the jump, and long live Shatner!

Two New Clips From Tonight’s ‘Fringe’

Fringe, much like some of the new hour-long dramas on Fox, has been picking up quite a bit of steam this season. Things have been heating up quite a bit with Agent Dunham and the mysterious Massive Dynamic, as well as some interesting developments between Walter and Peter.
We’ve got some brand new clips from tonight’s episode, “Earthling”, for you. In the first, Walter (John Noble,) takes on a puzzling investigation where victims inexplicably disintegrate into ash. He and Peter (Joshua Jackson) discuss the trials. In the second clip, Agent Dunham (Anna Torv) and Agent Broyles (Lance Reddick) discuss this week’s strange killer, and how it could be connected to the others.

Magneto Announced as Final Character Added to ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2′

With the first full downloadable character pack for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 hitting the Xbox Live Arcade later today, the final character has also been announced, which will round out the five-character bundle. That character is none other than the Master of Magnetism, Magneto.
It was rumored that Magneto was going to be added to the game after a tester leaked the info a few weeks back, but this is the first actual confirmation we’ve received from the game developers. The character will have more telekinetic and energy-based powers for you to toy with in the game, which should be a nice addition to your roster.
Magneto tops off the five-character bundle (consisting of Carnage, Psylocke, Cable, and Black Panther), which can be picked up on the Xbox Live Arcade later today for 800 Microsoft Points (or roughly $9.99). There is also the opportunity to purchase Juggernaut as a downloadable character for only $1.99, as well. »

John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker See ‘Red’

According to THR’s Heat Vision Blog, John C. Reilly and Mary-Louise Parker are now in negotiations to join the cast of Red, Summit Entertainment’s adaptation of the Wildstorm/DC Comics miniseries written by Jon and Erich Hoeber and being directed by Robert Schwentke. If they do end up signing up for the film, they will join a cast that already includes Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren.
Originally published in 2003 and 2004, Red was co-created by writer Warren Ellis and artist Cully Hammer. It centers on a former black-ops agent Paul Moses (Bruce Willis), now in retirement, who has to contend with younger, more high-tech assassins who want to kill him and keep his former exploits from going public. Naturally, the first hit squad fails and alerts Moses that he’s being targeted. So, he goes on the offensive in order to stay alive.

Uncover the Secrets of Suresh’s Work On ‘Heroes’

If you watched Monday’s episode of Heroes, which was a pretty good one, you know that it featured Mohinder Suresh’s (Sendhil Ramamurthy) long-awaited return to the show. But the question still remains: What is Samuel’s plan for him and why is Hiro so annoying now? Well, that first one is a real question anyway. Hiro isn’t that annoying.
While you ponder those question, we’ve got a bunch of clips for you that will potentially help you discover some of the answers about Suresh, Smauel, Hiro and the mysterious past and origins of all your favorite characters. These clips feature Mohinder’s father, Chandra Suresh, at Coyote Sands research camp. He was doing research at the camp, you may remember, during last season’s episode “1961″ and what he is doing there may hold the key to mysteries only hinted at until now.

First Look at James Marsters In ‘Caprica’

Over at the blog run by the network formerly known as Sci-Fi, they have a new trailer for the upcoming series Caprica featuring a glimpse, albeit a brief one, of James Marsters in character as terrorist leader Barnabus Greeley. Not sure I’m in love with that name yet, sorry Jane.
Anyway, this is one of those situations where if you blink, look away or sneeze, you will miss Marsters’ appearance. Still, its kinda cool to seem him and know that the premiere of Caprica is only a short two months (or so) away. Plus, his “Someone’s dying today” line is also pretty darn cool. Also, there’s some other stuff in the trailer that’s worth watching so do, please, watch it — after the ever-present jump of course.

Parallels Desktop for Mac Updated to Version 5.0

In the interest of being fair, we bring you news of an update to the other really good Windows virtualization software for the Mac: Parallels Desktop. Much like VMware, this software allows you to, gasp, run Windows in a , well, a window on your Intel Mac running Os X. Here’s all you need to know about this update.
This latest version of Parallels features Snow Leopard compatibility, Windows 7 support, full support for Aero, including Flip 3D in Windows Vista and 7, OpenGL 2.1 and a bunch of other new or improved features. You aren’t limited to Windows, actually, as Parallels also adds support for other operating systems like Linux.
Parallels 5.0 is a free upgrade for those who purchased version 4 on October 1st, 2009 or later. Others will have to pay U.S. $49.99 to upgrade, or U.S. $79.99 for a new license. Parallels is also offering a crossgrade licensing option to VMware Fusion 2 users. »
