12 August 2017 4:50 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Not crazy about the job President Donald Trump is doing? Blame his predecessor, Barack Obama. At least that’s what Seth Meyers had to say in an interview with “Sunday Today,” which airs Aug. 13. In what we’re pretty sure was a joke, Meyers told Willie Geist that he knew way back in 2011 that Obama would force Trump to make a bid for the highest office in the land. Reflecting on the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which Meyers performed at, the “Saturday Night Live” alum said that he knew Obama’s merciless roasting of Trump over Trump’s suggestion that Obama. »

Charlottesville Protesters Douse Journalists With Urine, Katie Couric Reports

12 August 2017 2:41 PM, PDT | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, clearly have no love for the media. According to Katie Couric, who is covering the “Unite the Right” rally for her upcoming series on NatGeo, two of her producers “got sprayed with urine” while reporting on the increasingly violent protests Saturday morning. “Lovely. Hard to keep your cool,” she added. Couric, a graduate of the city’s University of Virginia, posted several short videos of the protests on her social media channels — including clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters. President Donald Trump drew swift and harsh criticism after addressing the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia on Saturday, with critics calling him out on a number of fronts. Many detractors took issue with Trump condemning the violence “on many sides,” without specifically calling out the white nationalists whose rally sparked the unrest. “Did Trump really say that he condemns the violence on ‘many sides’? The white folks with tiki torches brought the violence, own it,” activist DeRay Mckesson weighed in. Analysis: Hate Groups Bank on Charlottesville Media Coverage as Recruitment Tool

12 August 2017 12:08 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The turnout of white nationalists that sparked violence in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend reflects an alarming level of cooperation among disparate hate groups to gain mainstream media attention. That’s the view of an expert at the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Montgomery, Ala.-based civil rights org that has tracked the activities of white supremacist groups since the early 1980s.

Keegan Hankes, a research analyst for the Splc, said the Charlottesville gatherings on Friday night and Saturday morning were heavily promoted in a months-long organizing campaign via social media by multiple white nationalist organizations in a bid to demonstrate a show of force in numbers. The effort not surprisingly brought out counter-protesters from leftist organizations, including those identifying with the Black Lives Matter movement, as well as clergy and others who tried to advocate for non-violent protest.

The timing of the rally dubbed “Unite the Right” was pegged to the city’s decision to remove a »

‘Rescue Dog to Super Dog’ Trainers on Bonding Service Dogs and Their Owners

12 August 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Animal Planet’s mission is to present projects of passion, and they are delivering upon that promise with their new series “Rescue Dog to Super Dog.” The show features dog trainers Nate Schoemer and Laura London working with a variety of individuals in need of service dogs. They visit shelters to find the perfect match, and then they begin training the animal to be able to provide the specific type of support each person needs.

“I think both of these populations — people who are disabled and shelter dogs — are marginalized and a little without voice, so I think bringing them together empowers both of them and shines a light on both groups,” London tells Variety. “The heart of the show is undeniable, and I think when people watch it, whether or not they have a disability, it’s going to speak to them.”

A jury that included high profile directors Olivier Assayas and Miguel Gomes has awarded Wang Bing’s unblinkered documentary “Mrs. Fang” the Golden Leopard at the 70th anniversary edition of the Locarno Festival, which will end Saturday night, Aug. 12. In keeping with the director’s usual stripped down, uncompromising style, the film focuses on the death of a woman with Alzheimer’s in an impoverished corner of China. The Special Jury Prize has gone to Brazil’s “Good Manners,” a werewolf story with lesbian overtones directed by Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas, while best director was awarded to veteran filmmaker F.J. Ossang for “9 Fingers.”

Rounding out the prizes in the international competition were best actress to Isabelle Huppert for Serge Bozon’s ironic comedy “Madame Hyde,” and best actress to Elliott Crosset Hove for Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason’s debut, “Winter Brothers.” »
