'Pirates' Fails to Claim Box Office Treasure

New Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel, At World's End, appears to have fallen short of reclaiming its place in the U.S. box office record books - but Johnny Depp and his crew are still celebrating. The second sequel has scored an estimated $112.5 million in its opening weekend, although official figures won't be released until after Memorial Day. The figure, though impressive, is well below last summer's $135.6 million opening weekend take for Pirates sequel Dead Man's Chest. And it's way short of Spider-Man 3's record-breaking $151.1 million opening weekend earlier this month. But the Pirates won't exactly be walking the plank - At World's End scored the fifth-biggest three-day opening ever. The film has also made an additional $205.5 million internationally since it hit cinemas worldwide on Wednesday. The sequel easily tops the new U.S. box office chart, which is led by the third films in three franchises. Shrek the Third comes in second with an impressive $51 million second-weekend take, while Spider-Man 3 holds on to third place with $13.7 million. The third Spider-Man film has now notched up $303.3 million in America alone - in just a month. The movie's worldwide figure has already topped $800 million.

Lohan Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Troubled star Lindsay Lohan has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. The Mean Girls actress lost control of her Mercedes convertible at around 5:30am on Saturday, hitting a curb and trees, and was taken to Century City Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. After receiving a 911 call about the incident, Beverly Hills Police placed Lohan under arrest on suspicion of DUI after finding a small amount of a substance, thought to be cocaine, at the scene of the crash. Lieutenant Mitch McCann of the Beverly Hills Police said it appeared as if Lohan was speeding when she lost control of the vehicle. He also added the drugs found were "not on (Lohan's) person", but declined to reveal where they had been discovered. Two people traveling in the car with the actress were not injured, and Lohan is not currently being held in custody.

Romanian Drama Scoops Cannes' Top Prize

The Romanian film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was awarded the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday. The drama, which explores issues of abortion and repression in 1980s communist Romania, beat competition from Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park, Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights, and The Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men to win the prestigious award. Accepting the prize, director Cristian Mungiu said, "This story, in which we believe so much, is going to reach lots of people now. I also hope that this award that I am getting tonight is going to be good news for small filmmakers from small countries because it looks like you don't necessarily need a big budget and a lot of stars." The jury, headed by British director Stephen Frears, awarded two jury prizes to Persepolis, a film about a young woman growing up during the Iranian revolution, and Silent Light, which explores a husband's infidelity in a Mennonite community based in Mexico. Meanwhile, former Palme d'Or winner Van Sant received the 60th Anniversary Prize for Paranoid Park, while Julian Schnabel was honored with the Best Director gong for The Diving Bell and Butterfly.

O'Donnell Quits 'The View'

Actress-turned-U.S. TV personality Rosie O'Donnell has quit her job as a host of The View after a vicious war of words with a fellow presenter hit the headlines earlier this week. The A League of Their Own star clashed with co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck on Wednesday's program after the pair fell out over their political views, and she has not returned to the daytime show since. She appeared on a show that aired yesterday, but that was taped on Tuesday. In a posting on her blog after the on-air fight, she told fans she didn't know when she'd be back, but now the show's producers have confirmed O'Donnell has quit. On her blog late yesterday, O'Donnell said, "I have said all I needed," and posted a scrapbook tribute to her The View co-hosts as a touching swansong video. The outspoken TV star had already chosen to depart the talk show when her year-long contract expires next month, but has now decided to leave The View early. Network President Brian Frons at ABC revealed yesterday, "We had hoped that Rosie would be with us until the end of her contract three weeks from now, but Rosie has informed us that she would like an early leave. "Therefore, we part ways, thank her for her tremendous contribution to The View and wish her well." O'Donnell, who sent ratings for the daytime show soaring with outspoken attacks on Donald Trump and American Idol, says, "It's been an amazing year and I love all three women (on the show)."

Lee Cut from 'Sweeney Todd'

Horror movie icon Christopher Lee has been cut out of another major movie - director Tim Burton has axed the actor's role as a ghost in Sweeney Todd. Lee raged when his character Saruman was cut from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - and now he's been left out of another major blockbuster. According to FilmStew.com, Lee was slated to play a Gentleman Ghost in Burton's movie musical, which stars Johnny Depp as the fabled Demon Barber of Fleet Street, London - but Lee won't be needed afterall. But at least the aged actor didn't waste time filming his scenes for the movie. He tells London's Daily Telegraph, "It would have been worse if I had done the scenes, but I never got to film them."

Pregnant Jovovich Puts Wedding on Hold

Milla Jovovich has stalled her wedding to director Paul W.S. Anderson because she doesn't want to be a pregnant bride. The couple was planning to wed later this year , but now the nuptials have been put on hold. The actress/model says, "I don't want to do a white-trash wedding with a big belly." The Fifth Element star and her Resident Evil director are expecting their first child this autumn.

Newman to Retire from Acting

Hollywood legend Paul Newman is to retire from acting - as he has "lost confidence" in his movie star skills. The veteran actor, 82, who has appeared in more than 50 films including Cool Hand Luke, admits his elderly years are behind his decision to withdraw from Tinseltown. He says, "I'm not able to work anymore as an actor and still at the level that I would want to. I'm just, you know, you start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Parker Urges Young America to Cover Up with New Fashion Line

Actress Sarah Jessica Parker has launched a crusade to cover up young America with her new cheap-chic clothing line Bitten. The former Sex & the City star's new Steve & Barry line of affordable womenswear features only conservative attire - because the actress is tired of seeing young girls baring almost all. The 2004 Designers of America Fashion Icon award winner says, "There's not going to be any inappropriate midriff showing, regardless of your age. I really don't care for it. I feel like, as a culture, we have seen enough damage done by it. It's provocative in a way that I just don't feel comfortable with."

Carnahan Surprised at 'Smokin' Aces' Sequel Request

Filmmaker Joe Carnahan is amazed his box-office flop Smokin' Aces became so successful as a rental DVD movie bosses now want to shoot a prequel. Crime drama Smokin' Aces slipped in and out of cinemas almost unnoticed upon its release last year - despite a cast including Ben Affleck and Andy Garcia - but became a hugely popular rental. However, although he will be involved with the film, Carnahan won't be directing the follow-up. He writes on his website: "Universal wants to move ahead with a direct-to-video prequel of Smokin' and asked me if I wanted to Godfather the thing and make sure we did a really cool story. "The DVD numbers Smokin' Aces has done are astounding and they want to strike while the iron is hot. Whatever reluctance I have is alleviated by the fact that we can really do this balls out, hardcore prequel and not be constrained by ratings or any other puritanical MPAA bulls**t. That I love. "I won't be directing. I will probably help break story - something lean and mean and nasty."

McGregor Launches Second Motorcycle Odyssey

British actor Ewan McGregor has embarked on monumental motorcycle journey from London to Cape Town, South Africa, in a bid to raise money for charity. The Star Wars star has already arrived in Italy with friend Charley Boorman - on the first leg of their trip, dubbed Long Way Down. The pair completed a similar adventure in 2004 from Scotland to New York via Europe and Asia, which was made into the BBC documentary Long Way Round. McGregor and Boorman will pass through 20 countries including many areas plagued with poverty, violence and civil strife. They hope to raise funds for UNICEF the Children's Hospice Association Scotland and the charity Riders For Health - which supports motorcycle-riding health workers in Africa. McGregor, 36, says, "Long Way Round changed us all - it boned us together and made our dreams come true - and it's not often something like that happens. So to be given another opportunity to do something like this is amazing." Long Way Down is also being made into a TV series.
