Review
Jonathan Glazer's follow-up to Sexy Beast, Birth is a gravely serious yet intensely absorbing look at a widow contemplating a relationship with a young boy, after he provides convincing proof he's her husband. The film would seem to have the makings of good controversy -- reincarnation, pedophilia -- but Birth failed to provoke, getting brushed aside as a "weird little mistake" seen by few. That's a shame, because it's a beautifully crafted film and a haunting consideration of its unusual subject. Nicole Kidman gives a daring, detailed performance, conveying deeply conflicted emotion through vacant stares that undergo minute shifts in accordance with her thoughts. She invites the audience into her shoes, asking what they'd do if confronted with the same evidence. Glazer gives Kidman room to explore through long and lingering takes, which reinforce the meditative pacing. Danny Huston is superlative as the fianc unraveling under the weight of the boy's bizarre infiltration, and Anne Heche etches her own lasting impression as Kidman's former rival, gaunt and focused. But the performance that really drives the film, for better or worse, is that of ten-year-old Cameron Bright -- who played another child of uncommon birth, a clone, in Godsend, released just a few months earlier. Bright may have confused the two films, because he gives Sean the empty affect of a pod person; he's a catatonic stalker rather than a facsimile of Anna's former husband, whether or not that's the most effective incarnation for winning her back. Glazer's choice is redeemed through the coda, which -- while no less cleanly resolved than any other part of this uncomfortable story -- at least indicates some hope for these lost souls. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Synopsis
Directed by Jonathan Glazer, Birth takes place in New York's Upper East Side, where Anna (Nicole Kidman), a 35-year-old widow, resides. Just as Anna has shaken off what she thought were the final remnants of her old life -- she has even found love with a new man, Joseph (Danny Huston), whom she plans on marrying -- Sean (Cameron Bright), a ten-year-old boy, comes into her life insisting that he is the reincarnation of her late husband. Though she initially brushes off the boy's claims as the result of a crush on her, his grave demeanor and uncanny knowledge of her life leads Anna through a self-reevaluation that not only threatens her marital plans with Joseph (Huston), but also strains her relationship with her mother, Eleanor (Lauren Bacall). ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars A daring exploration, Mar 11 2007
The focus of this story is reincarnation. A middle aged woman loses her husband from a fatal heart attack he has while out jogging one day, and about 10 years later, after she has rebuilt her life, she decides to re-marry. However, this 10 year old boy suddenly comes into her life and is certain that he is her dead husband reincarnated. He begins to convince her of this as well, and she struggles to hold onto her sanity, as well as her current engagement. Of course the danger here is obviously the differences in their ages, and some may critique the story for this. However, the intimacy is only emotional and does not cross over into anything untasteful. The story is a daring one, as it explores the 'impossible' in utterly inconvenient circumstances, as well as the infinite agony of true love lost. Both of the main actors give exceptional performances in conveying the emotional turmoil that they share, creating a sense of intimacy while keeping things on the innocent side. The end leaves you feeling haunted, and gives you something to think about. I would recommend this movie to people who have an open mind.
