Reminiscent of Altman's Shortcuts, this is a powerful, depressing collection of stories concerning people clinging to the edge of life. The director manages to cut from sublime to the shocking with skill and ease.
The intricate plot is handled with skill; however this is an affecting and atmospheric film in which money, alcohol and grief are placed firmly at the centre of the human psyche.
This is the best foreign language (Finland) movie I have seen all year. Watch Lilya-4-Ever afterwards to set yourself up for a fun evening of upbeat movies.
