With only a month and a half left of 2008, we at Boxwish are starting to get all nostalgic looking back over what has been a great year for films. In the action genre there was the return of old favourites Indiana Jones, James Bond and Batman with some exciting new kids on the block like Iron Man also making their mark. Boyish comedies consistently delivered laughs such as Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express and Step Brothers, while ladies got a strong shout-out with the likes of Sex and the City and Mamma Mia! Adorable robot Wall•E stole hearts, musicals as diverse as High School Musical 3 and Sweeney Todd had us tapping our feet and directors such as Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla) and the Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading) made dramatic comebacks. And so as the year that was begins to wind up, we look back at

Alright! You sir, you sir, how about a shave? Come and visit your good friend Sweeney. You sir, you sir? Welcome to the grave!
Seeing as my sister, Sarah, skipped out of ComicCon this year, and therefore didn't make our costume gallery, I thought it appropriate that she get a Fan Made post for Halloween. (Plus she didn't win a single costume contest -- we never do.) This year, she alone flew our costuming banner with her meticulously re-created Sweeney Todd costume. She's been working on this for months and while you can't see it in this photo, on her right hip is a perfect copy of his razor holster, carrying at least two more of the replica switchblades. (Having now experienced the smell of boiled leather, I think I know what Mrs. Lovett's kitchen might have smelled like.) She's currently in cosmotology school and showed up on Friday in character -- not surprisingly,

Yesterday, The Exorcist was riding high having been named the scariest horror flick by two separate surveys and now the supernatural scarer and nine other creepy classics have been named as the best of their genre by Us entertainment journalist Tom O’Neil. To commemorate this selection The Hollywood Museum, which O’Neil guest curates, is displaying costumes, props and memorabilia from the terrifying ten as part of its “Chamber of Horrors” exhibit. It’s the place to be for Californian residents this Halloween weekend.
The Exorcist is joined in the list by a range of horrors from slasher (Friday the 13th, Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street) to supernatural (The Shining, The Haunting), from old (1932’s The Mummy, 1960’s Psycho) to more modern (1991’s The Silence of the Lambs) and with a blockbuster (Jaws) thrown in for good measure. Displayed goodies include masks (those worn by Jason in Friday the 13th,

Following the news of Crispin Glover's casting as the Knave of Hearts in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland comes word that Christopher Lee and Eleanor Tomlinson are joining the cast, while Danny Elfman confirms his involvement on the musical end of things.
SlashFilm reports on Lee's casting, stating that the actor's role in the film has yet to be made known. Speculation exists that he'll either play The Caterpillar, King of Hearts or The White Knight. Lee is no stranger to fantasy films, as he's played Sith Lord Count Dooku in Star Wars and Saruman the White in Lord of the Rings. He's also a familiar face in the Burton circuit, having had roles in Sleepy Hallow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride and deleted scenes of Sweeney Todd.
Sixteen-year-old Eleanor Tomlinson has snagged the all original role of Fiona Chataway. Fiona, created specifically for Burton's vision,

While the Aussie survival flick Dying Breed isn't set to hit U.S. screens until January (as part of After Dark Horrorfest III, which we last told you about here), things are ramping up for the film's homeland release on November 6th. A new viral video arrived here at Fango this morning, promoting the film via some very Sweeney Todd-esque baked goods. It comes with the warning that "Every Body Has Different Tastes."
Directed by Jody Dwyer, Dying Breed concerns a group of researchers who encounter a cannibalistic clan while searching for a rare tiger in the Tasmanian wilderness. The gory chiller co-stars Nathan (Wolf Creek) Phillips and Leigh (Saw) Whannell.

This summer's blockbuster reboot The Incredible Hulk, featuring Edward Norton in the title role of the gamma-ray enhanced superhero, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Pick up the 3-Disc Special Edition and enjoy a plethora of special features, including the much-discussed alternate opening in which a tiny glimpse of Captain America is said to be revealed.
Also debuting on DVD today: Bryan Bertino's super-scary home-invasion flick The Strangers, available in both standard and unrated editions; Ben Stein's Darwinian documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed; and new Blu-ray editions of Sweeney Todd and Casino Royale.
Our DVD pick of the week is the two-volume James Bond Blu-ray Collection, featuring six classic 007 flicks, Dr. No, Thunderball, Live and Let Die, For Your Eyes Only, From Russia with Love, and Die Another Day, available for the first time in high definition. It's the perfect way to bone up on Bond

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed The Incredible Hulk I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition, which you can read right here, but suffice to say, I love this film and think it is one of the best comic book flicks I have ever seen. It is certainly better than Iron Man and second to The Dark Knight when it comes to summer 2009 superhero movies. It looks fantastic and has a thunderous soundtrack that will shake your room. The Blu-ray has a boat load of features and I would call it a must buy for any fan of straight-up entertaining flicks. Sure, it isn't as serious as The Dark Knight and doesn't have Robert Downey's wit, but in terms of films that describe "spectacle" this one fills the bill. James Bond on Blu-ray

The awards ceremony might not air until Tuesday, but thanks to the beauty that is the Internet (and Ace Showbiz), read on to see the winners for Scream 2008.
Being a fanboy's wet dream, there's really no surprise that The Dark Knight was insanely victorious -- it's probably more of a surprise to list what the film didn't win, rather than what it did. Nevertheless, after earning 21 nods, it nabbed 12 of them, including Ultimate Scream Movie, Best Sequel, Best Hero and Villain, and Best F/X. But the man who follows the bat signal wasn't the only victorious hero -- Hellboy II got Best Fantasy Movie, and Iron Man scored Best Sci-Fi, as well as a Best Actor win for Robert Downey Jr. The other big winner was Tim Burton's music-filled blood-letting Sweeney Todd, which grabbed Best Horror Movie and Best Actor for Johnny Depp. But it

Johnny Depp is taking his new role as the Mad Hatter literally - he has been caught eating his hat.
The Hollywood star portrays the famous character in director Tim Burton's new version of Alice in Wonderland, and he has been amusing crewmembers on set with his strange behaviour.
Burton, who was worked with Depp on numerous film projects, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, says the actor is embracing his latest role.
He says, "Nobody plays oddballs better than Johnny and he's loving playing this one. He actually ate his hat the other day. No word of a lie he just bit into the brim and chewed."
