Scenes We Love: Groucho Insulting Everyone in 'Duck Soup'

18 July 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The other night I went to the top of Hotel deLuxe in downtown Portland for an open-air screening of Duck Soup, which kicked off the Northwest Film Center's summer series of rooftop movies. I was under the impression that I'd seen every Marx Brothers movie when I was in high school, but it turns out that apart from clips (such as the legendary mirror scene), Duck Soup was new to me. It's an easy mistake to make, as those early Marx films have titles -- Horse Feathers, Animal Crackers, etc. -- that don't give you any clue what they're about.

Duck Soup is the one with Groucho playing Rufus T. Firefly, the newly appointed leader of the country of Freedonia. Released in 1933, it was the fifth and last feature that the Marxes made for Paramount before going to MGM, and it was also the last film that Groucho, Chico, and »

Whatever Works

Directed by: Woody Allen

Cast: Larry David, Evan Rachel Wood, Patricia Clarkson

Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: June 26, 2009 (Limited)

Plot: An intelligent misanthrope (David) has an unlikely relationship with a girl from Mississippi (Wood) who is nearly 40 years younger than him.

Who’s It For? Woody Allen fans, especially those who can appreciate his lighter fare. Whatever Works is also for people who want to experience dating comedies that are a bit more fruitful and still incomparable to the other stuff coming out today.

Expectations: After a morbid trip to London (Scoop, Cassandra’s Dream) and a spicy trip to Spain, (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), it seemed like Woody would be settling back in the coziness of both New York City and making light comedies about young women being enamored with old dudes.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Larry David as Boris Yellnikoff: Only a couple of episodes »

Fan Rant: No Shopping on Cinema Screens!

18 February 2009 9:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I feel bad for you, Isla Fisher. I may have bashed your ridiculous movie in a rant, but I can't believe that everyone is making such a big deal about you playing a confessed shopaholic. Such was my distaste for the film that I initially agreed with everyone mocking its economic ill-timing, and laughed along with them. (The best quote is from Time: "But as an ill-timed anthropological artifact, Confessions offers weird pleasures, not least among them the fact that it makes us root for the debt collector.") Then I came across this Sarah Jessica Parker quote from Access Hollywood pondering how a Sex in the City sequel would avoid a Shopaholic trap. "How do we address these economic times in a franchise that has a lot to do with luxury and labels? How do we do that well? And how do we do that in a not lazy way? »
