Their names are synonymous with classic horror films.  Together, Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff presented an unbeatable tag team of terror.  For over 25 years they dueled for horror superiority with films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, White Zombie, The Bride Of Frankenstein, Mark Of The Vampire, and dozens of others.  Film historian Greg Mank, the foremost expert on classic horror of the 1930s and 1940s, takes horror fans on an incredible journey through the lives of these two icons of the silver screen in Bela Lugosi And Boris Karloff: The Expanded Story Of A Haunting Collaboration.

In a volume nearly 700 pages long, Mank looks at their films both individually and together, as well as their personal and private lives and relationships.  Over the years Mank has conducted interviews with hundreds of personalities related to classic horror including many surviving stars, crewmembers, and the families of the stars.  With Mank’s work, »

Halloween is coming, and fright flicks are everywhere at repertory houses and special showings. Joining the screening events we previously listed here and here are more big-screen revivals of classic fear films, plus a couple of East Coast Zombie Walks!

• Canadian undead fans can take part in the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk, which takes place Saturday, October 24 beginning at 3 p.m. This one starts at Trinity Bellwoods Park (meeting place is the pit between Dundas Street and, appropriately enough, Gore Vale Avenue) and ends at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), where the festivities continue with a Cinema of the Dead double feature of Thom Eberhardt’s Night Of The Comet and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. Admission to the movies is $16 for ghouls and $20 for regular humans; more info on the Walk can be seen here, and on the screenings here.

• This year’s official New York City Zombie Crawl takes place Sunday, »

Sitges '09: My Sitges Story - Part 4

9 October 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Tuesday, October 6

Ok, so the events of two nights before are finally coming into focus (see previous entry here). I’m referring to the infamous Karoke party initiated by the Film Festival Mafia and spearheaded by Austin Fantastic Fest’s Tim League and NY Asian fest programmer Mark Walkow, neither of whom had any reservations about getting on stage and belting out a few tunes, even sober. For me, it takes a few of those fishbowl-size drinks before I muster the courage to give the B-52’s “Love Shack” a try. I was going to keep these drunken revelries to myself, but once an incriminating photo of me turned up in the daily Sitges festival newspaper a day later, and various celebrants had secretly videotaped the sordid affair, I had no choice but to come clean. Now I know how David Letterman felt last week.

I do learn a few things that night, »

Exclusive: Grilling Leslie Nielsen of Stan Helsing

22 September 2009 1:18 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

It's hard to interview Leslie Neilsen and keep a straight face. The spoof-master general simply won't allow it.

When Fango recently caught up with the Airplane! and Naked Gun actor to discuss his portrayal of Kay (yes, a woman) in the upcoming Anchor Bay release of Stan Helsing (on DVD & Blu-ray October 27), Neilsen kept the jokes running at a steady pace as we quizzed him on everything from Forbidden Planet to Scary Movie.

Leslie Neilsen: So... you've always wanted to be in show business?

Fangoria: How did you get involved in Stan Helsing and what is the film about?

Ln: I don't know! (Laughs) The answer to both of those questions is that I don't know!  (Laughing Again) It's funny because I bumped in Bo [Zenga, the director] in Vancouver and he said that he'd like me to play a part in the movie. I read the script and I noticed that there »

Doug Jones Talks Frankenstein, The Hobbit, & Hellboy 3

24 June 2009 11:18 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Judging from their work together on Hellboy, Hellboy 2, and Pan’s Labyrinth, when director Guillermo del Toro gets together with actor Doug Jones, good things usually happen. So, naturally, in casting his many upcoming projects, Del Toro has turned to the highly talented Jones again. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire, Jones spoke about his involvement in Del Toro’s upcoming films, Frankenstein, The Hobbit, and possibly Hellboy 3.

I’ve excerpted some of the best parts of the interview below, but make sure to check out the full interview, which is linked at the bottom of the page.

On Frankenstein:

“Guillermo did say to the press that he’s already cast me as his monster, but we’ve yet to talk about it. But in his mind, if that’s what he’s decided, then it’s done…It would be a dream come true.”

"Bride Of Frankenstein" comes to life

21 June 2009 4:44 AM, PDT | www.ohmygore.com/ | See recent OhMyGore news »

Universal and Imagine are breathing new life into "Bride Of Frankenstein". The companies are in talks with Neil Burger to write and direct their long-stirring remake of the 1935 monster movie. Burger, who would pen the script with writing partner Dirk Wittenborn, most prominently wrote and helmed "The Illusionist", the Edward Norton magician mystery that earned nearly $40 million for Yari Film Group in 2006. James Whale's "Bride Of Frankenstein", which starred Boris Karloff as the monster and Elsa Lanchester as the titular bride, continued the story that began with 1931's "Frankenstein". A monster, on the run from an angry mob, has a series of adventures, and also persuades Dr. Frankenstein to create a mate. The doctor is successful, but the bride (who is not a central character)... »

Convention Report: Monsterpalooza 2009, Burbank, CA!

Monsterpalooza!

Hey fright fans, Jsyn here, and do I have a doozy of a convention report for you!

As a native New Yorker recently transplanted to Hollywoodland, I tend to tell it like it is and sometimes that gets me into trouble. Nevertheless, like you, I am a horror enthusiast who works hard for his money, especially in these troubled economic times. And frankly, I have stopped attending conventions with the frequency that I used to because it’s simply become too expensive and, worse, I am usually let down with the overall quality of the event. Like most convention goers, I despise feeling ripped-off by high ticket prices, higher parking fees and almost criminal prices for food and beverages. Also, I am not much of an autograph collector, and that seems to be a major aspect of most of these shows. It’s not even about actually meeting and interacting with these celebrities anymore, »

Universal Makes A Date With The Bride Of Frankenstein

18 June 2009 7:51 AM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are in talks with Neil "The Illusionist" Burger to write/direct a remake of director James Whale's 1935 feature The Bride Of Frankenstein. The original film starred actor Boris Karloff as 'The Monster', with Elsa Lanchester as 'The Bride', in a sequel that began with the 1931 feature Frankenstein, rooted in a subplot of the 1818 horror novel Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus. In Whale's The Bride, 'Henry Frankenstein' (Colin Clive) abandons his plans to create life, but is coerced by the Monster and encouraged by Henry's old mentor 'Dr Pretorius' into constructing a stitched-together re-animated 'mate' for him. Universal is looking forward to remaking its library of classic monster titles, including a new version of the 1954 feature Creature from the Black Lagoon and the release later this year of The Wolf Man, starring actor Benicio Del Toro, updating the 1941 Lon Chaney-starring feature...
