As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

No 76: Errol Flynn 1909-1959
Flynn was born in Tasmania, the son of an eminent marine biologist, and early on developed a passion for the sea and a reputation as a rebel. Spotted by a Warner Brothers talent scout while a young, very minor actor in England, he became an overnight Hollywood star in 1935 as a last-minute replacement for Robert Donat as the swashbuckling hero of Captain Blood. By 1936 he was the leading contender to play Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind.
Flynn was tall, slim, graceful, debonair with a neatly trimmed moustache, a winning smile, a hearty, self-mocking laugh. Everything he did, both on screen and off, contributed to his legendary status: the colonial background (he claimed to be a descendant of Fletcher Christian); the celebrated characters he played (General Custer, Robin Hood); his sexual conquests; his prodigious phallic dimensions (according to Truman Capote in Music for Chameleons,

There’s a new Robin Hood in town and at least this one drives on the left hand side of the road!
Sorry to get patriotic here but Robin Hood is English. From his legendary home in the heart of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire to the very gallant concept of robbing from the rich just to the feed the poor.
Yet when it comes to casting the film versions of the story, Hollywood could not accept a lead English actor. From Tasmanian Errol Flynn (The Adventures of Robin Hood), to Scottish Sean Connery (Robin and Marian), Irish Patrick Bergin (Robin Hood) and of course the very American Kevin Costner (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves). Only London born Cary Elwes has flown the flag for the English and that was in parody - Mel Brooks’ Men in Tights.

New Universal Films to Watch Out For: Robin Hood, MacGruber

Universal Studios has posted synopses of some of their major 2010 films, and two are piquing our interest here at Screen Rant.
The first is “Untitled Robin Hood Adventure,” directed by Ridley Scott of Blade Runner, Alien, Black Hawk Down, and I could keep going, fame. Russell Crowe steps into the tights (well, more like armor this time around looking at the Crowe’s Robin Hood costume) of the mythic English folk hero who enacted his own economic stimulus package for the peasants of Nottingham village.
This story has come to the big screen countless times, twice in one year even, with 1991 seeing Patrick Bergin in Robin Hood matching barbs with Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Some would say neither film, which played up the bandit’s romantic soul and added period realism, hit the bull’s-eye, and still consider Errol Flynn’s swashbuckling The Adventures of Robin Hood the gold standard.

9 Mel Brooks Movies Bundled for Blu-ray

Online retailers DVDEmpire.com and Amazon.com have both added active pre-order listings for The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray Disc with an Srp of $139.99.
Per the listings, the 9-disc set will include previously released Brooks' films on Blu-ray Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and Young Frankenstein, along with newcomers High Anxiety, History Of The World Part I, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Silent Movie, To Be Or Not To Be and The Twelve Chairs.
A little trivia: Robin Hood: Men in Tights will mark the fourth Robin Hood adventure to appear on Blu-ray. The first three are The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves with Kevin Costner and the first season of BBC's Robin Hood television show.
