The Monster Times: The Wizard Of Oz: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road (Game Review)

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from The Wizard Of Oz: Beyond The Yellow Brick Road for the Nintendo DS. The package touts the game as “a completely new, totally twisted take on the classic story,” and it's not far off. Taking The Wizard Of Oz and transforming it into a turn-based RPG is definitely different, I'm just not entirely sure it's good.
The set-up is the same; a tornado whisks Dorothy and Toto to a far away land. The titular yellow brick road remains, but the similarities end there. This time around the great wizard Oz has summoned Dorothy in order to fight for him, sending her and her companions out to defeat the 4 witches threatening to overthrow him as the most powerful sorcerer in the land. Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man are all present, with a distinct Japanese RPG style to their character models, which works,

Las Vegas Film Critics Society (Lvfcs) has honored "The Hurt Locker" as the Best Picture at its 2009 Sierra Awards. On the list that has been announced on Wednesday, December 16, it has also been known that the action drama won big as it grabbed the most gongs.
Beside the Best Picture prize, "The Hurt Locker" also aided Jeremy Renner and Kathryn Bigelow to receive Best Actor award and Best Director gong respectively. Additionally, the film also took home Best Cinematography and Best Film Editing kudos.
Meanwhile, nabbing two kudos were "Inglourious Basterds" and "The Fantastic Mr. Fox". The Brad Pitt-starring action drama won Best Supporting Actor prize for Christoph Waltz and Best Costume Design award for Anna B. Sheppard. Jose here, to remind you of an underrated gem from 2004.
When I was a child I was addicted to Superman. Not the Christopher Reeve movies and obviously not the weird TV show with Teri Hatcher, but the classic animated shorts from the 1930s. We had a VHS tape which I could watch for hours and hours completely enthralled by the terrific stories, the foreign adventures and even the sense of menace and doom conveyed by Dave Fleischer in under ten minutes.
Years later I had the same feeling watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Kerry Conran's debut film was a tribute to this era which featured giants robots, timeless kingdoms atop the Himalayas, perky reporters and heroines with eye patches.
Everything in the film is CGI, except for the actors, which gives it a retro-futuristic air. With nods to Dave Fleischer, Flash Gordon, Indiana Jones (which is

The prices plummeted this year, so Blu-ray players are likely to be under plenty of Christmas trees. Phelim O'Neill advises what to play on them
Blockbusters
Jj Abrams's rebooted Star Trek (Paramount) was not only the sole moment of unbridled fun in this year's blockbuster season but the best, full bells and whistles Blu-ray issue, too. With its sparkling HD visuals (not a given for Blu-ray), vibrant soundtrack and exhaustive supplementary material, it's ideal for showing to anyone who dares ask, "Why all the fuss about Blu-ray?"
Documentary
Let's not forget the educational importance of Blu-ray. Actually, let's do, as the picture quality on series like David Attenborough's Planet Earth and Life (BBC) is so gobsmackingly pristine that the senses are too overloaded to take in any useful information. Better to go for slightly lower-fi stuff, documentaries where the pictures do all the talking

In this morning’s roundup of Oscar news ‘n’ notes from around the web, honors come in, readers weigh in, and Carey Mulligan’s stock rises … because of “The Wizard of Oz.”
The Palm Springs International Film Festival, which had been lagging behind the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in announcing awards, adds three more honorees to its slate: “Up in the Air” director Jason Reitman will receive its Director of the Year Award, “The Hurt Locker” star Jeremy Renner will take home the Breakthrough Performance Awar

Quick, when I say the words “SyFy Original Movie,” what images immediately rush to mind? Hokey CGI effects? Laughable character motivation? Bafflingly obtuse plots and stories? Now imagine this heralded brand, responsible for such masterpieces as “Ice Spiders” and “S.S. Doomtrooper,” attempting to interpret one of the most beloved pieces of western fiction ever.
This is the mindset one must enter before attempting to understand Alice, the SyFy mini-series. In a nutshell, the story is essentially a third installment of the Alice in Wonderland saga, if Lewis Carroll were alive and writing today, preferred teleplays to novels, had abandoned Victorian-era satire for dystopic art direction, and was intent on destroying the franchise so badly that no one would ever again be able to continue it. For those who remembered last year’s Tin Man, this is the exact same thing, simply swapping out The Wizard of Oz for Alice’s

'Nutcracker' To Become An Action Movie

It was weird enough to hear that there would be a movie based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the story most commonly associated with Tchaikovsky's symphony. But try this on for size: It's going to be an action movie. Huh?
The Hollywood Repoter says New Line bought a pitch from writer Darren Lemke to turn the story into an action-adventure, and the initial rumor was that Robert Zemeckis would make this his next motion-capture movie (or maybe it would follow the remake of Yellow Submarine. There's no mention of Zemeckis in this new report, however.
Lemke, who had a hand in the fourth Shrek, has wrapped up work on an adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, which, being public domain, can be turned into just about anything you want it to. That update led to his arrival at The Nutcracker. "I like the classic stories, but only if

The Academy has decided to extend the shortlist for next year's best picture Oscar from five to 10 films. Is that a good idea? We can't quite decide…
It has to be a bad idea, doesn't it?
Ten best picture nominations in the Oscars instead of five? It's a cynical move by the Academy to boost viewing figures by opening the field to crowd-pleasers such as The Dark Knight, the exclusion of which last year caused fanboy outrage. The Oscars aren't exactly the gold standard where quality is concerned, but they remain the most important fixture in the movie calendar and the nomination process is not to be treated lightly. Now the list will be swamped with button-pressing blockbusters such as Avatar and Star Trek, which may deserve their box-office receipts but absolutely should not be honoured alongside the all-time greats: All About Eve! Lawrence of Arabia! The Godfather!
True, but

I'll be the first to admit it: I hate remakes - especially of classics. I despise them. There should be a law against them. I believe that actors like Denzel Washington and John Travolta are geniuses. And, although I may have dreamed about a "What If?" film coupling of "Travolta meets Washington," I loathed the fact that it was done by remaking the classic film The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. So, I boycotted. Cry all you want, but understand this: somethings are sacred. You don't remake "Pelham" and you don't remake Bewitched or Land of the Lost. I reiterate: you just don't! I'll leave it at that.
However, like most rules, this one does have its exceptions - albeit rare. For instance, two years ago the SyFy released a remake of The Wizard of Oz, entitled Tin Man. I balked at the undertaking at first, but found myself

The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road is a perfectly simple RPG for kids. That is to say, it.s simple enough that I can handle the game play. Actual kids will probably prefer something more advanced.
Review: Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road on Nintendo DS
The pseudo-track ball control actually works surprisingly well. I.m not particularly fond of touch screen movement. D-pads always served me just fine but swiping the on screen trackball in the direction and speed you want to move gets you around just fine.

With Black Friday sales behind us but with Christmas right around the corner, there’s still time to get some great movies on DVD and Blu-ray this holiday season. To help, here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. I guess the next three DVD/Blu-ray previews I write up could also be looked at as potential gift guides as we are now counting our way down to Christmas. Perhaps you'll find a little something for yourself as well as someone on your list. Let's get into it...
A Christmas Tale (Criterion Collection)
I just posted my review of the Blu-ray edition and it's a film I am already interested in revisiting and expect I will have a different reaction to each time. As it stands I enjoyed it, but wasn't completely bowled over and in terms of special features this one is a bit light when it comes to Criterion standards with only a making-of interview featurette and Desplechin's 2007 documentary about the selling of his family home, which is actually quite good. Stumped for what to buy your friends and family this year? Forget the socks and chocs and bubble bath – our critics have chosen 40 of the best music, film and TV box sets
Pop by Kitty Empire
1 The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set (Parlophone)
At £145, the Beatles box set probably costs roughly what a small car did in the early 1960s. But the startling detail on these CDs will repay the outlay for Beatles nerds and mere mortals alike. Its sister release, The Beatles in Mono – 1960s scooter prices, at a guess – is even more desirable, audiophiles reckon.
2 Kraftwerk The Catalogue (Mute/Emi)
Eight albums by the electronic Beatles, dating from 1974's Autobahn, all gleamingly remastered. Costing considerably less than one of Ralf Hütter's beloved bicycles, this is the master text of most electronic genres – electro, techno, even hip-hop – today.

Although we don't have anything resembling Thanksgiving in my culture (Penélope Cruz was talking about that on Letterman the other day) I have a special place in my heart (and stomach) for turkey, gravy and pumpkin pie.
I also feel very grateful for the following: Technicolor, Woody Allen banter, Judy Garland's smile, the millisecond of suspense between normal talking and spontaneous singing in the musicals, post-Volver Penélope, the Truffaut/Hitchcock book, still being thrilled by the sepia-to-color switch in The Wizard of Oz, Nino Rota and La Strada, Julia Roberts' laugh, Scarlett and Rhett, Bette Davis' eyes, Ingrid Bergman's Italian phase, Jett Rink, Jacques Tourneur horror flicks, The Blob, pre-supermom Gwyneth, Wall-e, Jean-Pierre Léaud, Anne Hathaway at award shows, Brando as Kowalski, Meryl!, Gene Kelly's butt, subtitles...
