On Sunday night, prior to the encore broadcast of the Fringe premiere, Fox debuted this extended 7-minute preview for The Day the Earth Stood Still. This trailer extends and completes some of the scenes shown in the first trailer.
Upon seeing the first theatrical trailer previewed before Hancock in early July, I was very excited. The trailer felt very dark and cryptic, while being realistic as to what would actually happen in that situation.
Unfortunately, this feeling was mostly shot down for me with this new extended preview.
Judge for yourself:

The new scenes, specifically the ones focusing on destruction or the emerging giant spheres (marbles?) do not really work for me. I think these images also hurt the film’s appeal and make it almost “too sci-fi”, if that makes sense. It felt to me a lot like the bad parts of War of the Worlds, another remake of a classic science fiction film.

The upcoming remake of the classic 1950’s science fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reaves, Kathy Bates, Jennifer Connely, Jaden Smith, and John Cleese, has released some new footage, which can be found at io9.com. The seven and a half minutes cover scenes from Klaatu’s (Keanu Reeves) arrival on the planet Earth, some samplings of his strange powers, his interactions with people, and the beginning of the destruction of our planet by mysterious giant “spheres” that appear almost invisible. The original film, released in 1951 and based on a short story by author Harry Bates, tells the tale of a mysterious spacecraft that appears on Earth. It was a metaphor for the ongoing Communist Red [...]

If you watch the new J.J. Abrams show Fringe on Fox, you got something of a surprise during last night's encore rebroadcast: Seven minutes from The Day the Earth Stood Still, starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.
There hasn't been a remake with this much enmity among moviegoers in a long time. I think the producers and the studio may have underestimated the love audiences have for the 1951 Robert Wise original, because if they would seen this backlash coming, they may have passed.
I, on the other hand, think that even though The Day the Earth Stood Still is a classic, a remake is a good idea, because you can't possibly watch a sci-fi movie made before the dawn of modern special effects and take it seriously. Ten years from now, an 18-year-old stumbling across the original film would think it's terrible. The style of acting has changed dramatically, clearly

In case you missed the constant reminders during the football games yesterday, Fox was running a "sneak preview" of The Day The Earth Stood Still before the rerun of the "Fringe" premiere last night. I half expected them to just run the trailer but they actually showed off quite a bit of footage. One of the scenes (where Klaatu is interrogated) was shown at Comic-Con but there's a lot of new stuff in here as well. Take a look below and share your thoughts below!

So the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con is officially over - today feels like coming down from a “high.” Covering the Con is always a whirlwind, but at least this year (my second covering it) I felt like a was a bit more in control.
We did our best to bring you the lowdown on what is relevant to you although we couldn’t cover everything. That’s the problem with the Con - as far as movies and television almost everything is relevant to what we cover here at Screen Rant: Sci-Fi, superheroes, action and a bit of horror.
We managed to cover:
The Stargate Continuum DVD movie red carpet premiere. Jj Abrams’ Fringe panel. Battlestar Galactica. Joss Whedon’s highly anticipated Dollhouse TV series. The Stargate Atlantis panel. Zack Snyder’s follow up to 300: Watchmen. The pretty much waste of time that was ABC’s Lost panel. The completely opposite of that,

Dark Horizons scored some hi-res posters from Comic-Con for Max Payne and The Day the Earth Stood Still. Based on the Max Payne trailer, it’s too soon to draw any conclusions on whether the film will be good or not, although after his performance in The Happening, I’m not exactly excited to see Mark Whalberg in a leading role again.
As far as the Keanu-starring Tdtess remake, the panel for his film will be starting in an hour. At this point I’m still looking at it with a heavily skeptical eye and my gut reaction is that I think it’s going to be awful. But at least the posters are cool, with one giving us a definite look at the robot Gort.
The Max Payne posters are both extremely cool looking as well. You can click on the images to see bigger versions at Dark Horizons.

The San Diego Comic-Con starts in just over 11 more days, which means it's time to yet again gear up and prepare for one hell of an adventure in the world of comics. While the last few years have featured everything from Spider-Man 3 to 300 to Iron Man to Superbad, this year doesn't look as immensely impressive, but is instead spotted with a few highlights. Presentations this year include: The Day The Earth Stood Still, Max Payne, Red Sonja, RocknRolla, Ninja Assassin, Punisher: War Zone, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Watchmen, The Wolfman, The Spirit, Terminator Salvation, Pixar's Up, Pineapple Express, Friday the 13th, Wes Craven's 25/8, and much more! The last two years, Saturday has been the big day, but this year it's Friday. Interested in seeing the full schedule? Read on! In addition to our usual coverage of every last exciting panel that Comic-Con has to offer, we're introducing ...

The 2008 San Diego Comic Con is less than two weeks away, and once upon a time, this had a lot to do with comic books. Now it has fully transformed itself into an all-media experience, four days of movies, TV, and oh yeah, comics.
As a movie destination, Comic Con is unmatched in the amount exposure it provides certain films and more importantly, it offers the sort of up close and personal approach for its stars and creators that you can't find at Toronto, Sundance, or Cannes. It really is a fanboy weekend, a Star Trek convention with the most hyped movies around, and it helps create more hype for movies that may not have connected with audiences yet.
This year's Comic Con is great on Thursday and Friday, and a bit wanting on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's good and all, I just would've thought that would be the big day.

Gort 2008 gotsa red laser beam bitches!
Photo: 20th Century Fox I only recently saw the original 1951 version of The Day the Earth Stood Still, and it has its charms, but I wasn't exactly blown away and the idea of a remake was interesting considering there was plenty of room to wiggle in. The original centers on an alien visitor, Klaatu, and his giant robot counterpart, Gort, who visit Earth in an attempt to tell humans to shape up and abandon the war stuff and if you humans ever try bringing it into space they will be destroyed. As I said in a piece back in March, "Heavy stuff." Watching the trailer there is one thing that interests me, and that is the imagery of semi trucks and football stadiums being destroyed. It brings me back to a conversation had in the first film in which Klaatu is dicussing ways in

I know, I know, The Day the Earth Stood Still isn’t exactly horror -- in fact most would argue it’s about as sci-fi as one can get -- but I couldn’t help it; this trailer is actually way better than I expected it to be. Just watch it and feel free to bitch me out below. The remake opens everywhere on December 12th.
Then we have a new look (pun intended) at Blindness, which may also not be considered horror by some but sure looks pretty damn scary to me. A plague of blindness sweeps a major city, and only one woman is left with sight? How fast would things break down in that sort of a situation? Blindness will see a limited release on September 19th.

I’m not putting up the poster for Fox Studios’ The Day The Earth Stood Still for two reasons:
1. They might decide to threaten me with lawyers for some retarded reason, like they did after my previous post about the movie.
2. I think this film will be such a monstrous suck-fest that there is a danger it will act as a black hole and destroy the Earth. Ironic considering its “green” message.

The last time I took a survey, I got screwed over.
A few years back I participated in a survey for my cable company and it asked what specialty channels I liked. Ie: Being a fervent Nascar fan, I admitted to The Speed Channel and a few others. A year later my favorite channels were on their own special programming tier that I had to pay extra for.
After talking to a lot of people back then about that survey and what they told me, it seems all the survey did was tell the cable company what channels to charge extra for. Thanks Mr. Cable company. I’ll remember that one.
With that said: What do Blade Runner, Firefly and 1984 all have in common?
They topped their respective categories in a survey titled “Visions for Tomorrow” that The Sci-Fi Channel conducted asking site visitors to report in on their favorite movies,
