A Very Cunning Plan, Indeed

1 November 2009 11:08 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Warning: There be many spoilers and strong opinions ahead.

As I wrote in yesterday's mini-blog, we watched two films last night. I watched Scream Blacula Scream on my own as Jon was napping. Each film was a treat for vastly different reasons. The first was The Naked Monster, a loving send up of B monster films from the 50s and 60s. It makes very clever use of existing footage and casting of actors from those films (The Thing from Another World, War of the Worlds, and This Island Earth for example). In many cases, these were the last roles for those iconic actors. They all seemed to be having a great time, so we had a great time watching them. There were even a couple of bits with the wonderful Forrest J. Ackerman whom I had the pleasure of meeting more than once. We've toured his amazing home and had »

Celebrate Bob Burns' Hollywood Halloween

5 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

In October of 2002, I had the great opportunity to work alongside an army of movie monster fanatics and some of Hollywood's FX vets to bring 1951's The Thing from Another World to life...on the front lawn of a quaint home in Burbank, California. That home belonged to Bob Burns, who has been a dear friend and is known for not just his varied career but owning an enormous collection of film props like Rick Baker's lycanthrope from An American Werewolf in London , the Queen Alien head from Aliens as well as the time machine from George Pal's classic film (this is just barely the icing on the cake). For some time, Burns would put on elaborate Halloween shows in his neighborhood, drawing a line around the block. After an all too long hiatus, Burns would call upon his friends in... »

Scores from Outer Space

Undertones: Volume 6 The classic science fiction film emerged during a period of great societal paranoia in the Us in the early 1950s. The post-WW2 environment saw an increased concern with nuclear armament and a fear of the infiltration of communism on the American way of life. Essentially, the sci-fi film was Hollywood’s great metaphor for these threats; its power largely dependent on playing on the fears of the cinema-goer. Many of the films were low-budget affairs pumped out by the studios; a steady stream of high-camp and cheap thrills in order to provide what one can only assume was constant necking-fodder for teens at drive-ins. Amongst these ‘B’ pictures, many of which have been long lost in time to the more technologically-savvy audiences of recent years but considered charming nostalgia to retro film junkies, are films that stand out for their innovation and social commentary and are considered classics by modern cinophiles. »

‘The Thing’ Writer Talks Prequel

8 August 2009 10:26 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing has been quietly rumbling along in development for some time now. We know that Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore penned a draft of the script and that Eric Heisserer was brought in to do a rewrite for the film which is to be directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.

Heisserer has recently been doing some on-set publicity interviews for New Line Cinema’s A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot and while doing this, he gave away a few plot points as well as some information on when The Thing might start shooting.

Carpenter’s 1982 film was a “re-imagining” of the Howard Hawks-produced film The Thing From Another World from 1951. The Master of Horror’s film is set in an Antarctic research station where a shape-shifting alien kills the men stationed there one by one. Over the course of the film, »

Revisiting John Carpenter's The Thing

24 July 2009 4:26 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After an unexpected shootout with a couple of crazy Swedes…err Norwegians, a group of American scientists on an expedition in Antarctica take in a stray dog. Why the dog is wandering around in the middle of B.F.E. (that stands for…‘google it if you don’t already know’) is initially a mystery, but the bigger mystery is the Norwegians who seemed so extremely desperate to execute the canine. When the dog begins exhibiting odd behavior the crew takes notice. It’s kind of hard not to when the fur-ball sprouts all kinds of gooey extra extremities, emits an unearthly screech (that could make a window pane tremble in fear), and consumes and imitates all living things around it. I think that would draw my attention too.

After a bit of investigating the group discover that whatever that creature that appeared to be a beautiful Husky really was, »

Universal Wants To Do The Right Thing

31 May 2009 5:09 AM, PDT | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

Universal continues developing a feature remake of The Thing, directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen, adapting the 1938 Astounding Magazine 'novella' Who Goes There, by author John W. Campbell Jr. The short story was the basis of a 1980's feature by director John Carpenter and the 1951 theatrical release The Thing From Another World by director Howard Hawks. Premise of the original story follows a group of scientific researchers, isolated in Antarctica, who discover an alien spaceship buried in the ice. Recovering the alien pilot, the team quickly realize the deadly creature can assume the shape, memories and personality of any living being. Watch 'The Thing From Another World' Online

8 April 2009 7:49 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

As you may have heard in recent months, a prequel to The Thing is being prepped by Universal. The 1982 film by John Carpenter is not only a horror/sci-fi classic, it's also one of the very best remakes we've ever seen.

Ronald D. Moore of Battlestar Galactica fame wrote the first draft of the prequel, which was recently handed over to Eric Heisserer for a touch up. We also know that Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. will direct, which is a brave choice considering he hasn't directed a feature film. We're looking for a 2010 release of The Thing, set again at a facility in Antarctica.

Perhaps you didn't know The Thing was a remake or perhaps you've never seen the original, The Thing from Another World, released in 1951. Like the new Thing, the director of the Howard Hawks production was also untested; Christian Nyby's first job as a director was »

Discuss: Norwegians in 'The Thing' Prequel? Not So Fast

29 January 2009 6:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

"Wwwwwwwwait a Second! There's no Norwegians in the Campbell story!!" That's what I thought (and what Scott Weinberg put into words for me) when I clicked through Monika's mention of the planned new version of The Thing and read the article in Variety. Here's why: I hate it when filmmakers are (apparently) unfamiliar with the story they're basing their film on.

The sentence that made my eyes bug out? "New project borrows heavily from the John W. Campbell Jr. short story 'Who Goes There,' the basis of the [John] Carpenter film and 1951 Howard Hawks original The Thing From Another World. It is set in a Norwegian camp and chronicles how the shape-shifting alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp."

Wrong Wrong Wrong! I dug out my copy of the story, originally published in 1938, and read it again, just to make sure. There is no Norwegian camp in the story. »

Universal makes The Thing official

Following on from word earlier this month, Universal has put the official stamp on a new version of The Thing, signing up Matthijs Van Heijningen to direct a script penned by BSG’s Ron Moore. As previously expected, the new film is going back to basics, borrowing heavily from John W Campbell’s short story Who Goes There?, which spawned both Howard HawksThe Thing From Another World And John Carpenter’s 1982 version. Serving as a prequel to Carpenter's pic, Campbell’s story is set in a Norwegian...

It’s Official: ‘The Thing’ Prequel Is Coming

29 January 2009 11:31 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

What has been rumor has been officially confirmed: Universal will indeed be adding a prequel chapter to John Carpenter’s 1982 psychological-horror classic, The Thing.

Many have questioned just what a prequel to The Thing would be about, and who would be in it. Now it looks as though some of those answers are starting to come to light.

Here’s a primer for those who haven’t had the privilege of seeing  John Carpenter’s The Thing: It’s about a group of American scientists living on a remote  Antarctic station, who discover that a shape-shifting, body-snatching alien has infiltrated their camp and assumed the identities of some of the men, turning friend against friend in a bloody battle for survival.

Carpenter’s film was a re-imagining of the 1951 Howard Hawks film, The Thing From Another World, which was itself a re-imagining of the 1938 short story by John W. Campbell Jr., »

Universal Announces The Thing Prequel

28 January 2009 11:49 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

John Carpenter’s The Thing may well be one of the greatest horror movies of all time – dark, intensely atmospheric, wildly imaginative and grimly surreal. Even though it is itself a remake – of Christian Nyby’s The Thing From Another World – we’ve thrust our fingers in our ears and gone ‘la-la-la’ whenever anyone has suggested a remake or reimagining. But today, Universal officially announced plans for a prequel which will detail how the shape-shifting alien was uncovered by “those crazy Swedes” (in reality, a Norwegian research team) and went on to wreak bloody havoc – and we have to say, we’re a little intrigued. Just a little, mind.Mainly because the movie will be written by Ronald D. Moore, the big brain behind the wonderful revitalisation of Battlestar Galactica. If he can do for Carpenter’s shape-shifting alien what he did for those frakkin’ Cylons, then this could be worth watching. »

John Carpenter's 'The Thing' Sees a New Chapter On the Way

28 January 2009 11:34 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

And the hits keep on coming as if the idea of a Lizzie Maguire and Air Bud version of Bonnie and Clyde wasn't enough we now have a "re-imagining" of John Carpenter's The Thing on the way with "Battlestar Galactica" exec producer Ron Moore writing the script and commercials director Matthijs Van Heijningen at the helm. I have no idea how it will be any different since the source material remains the same in the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There" and the 1951 Howard Hawks original The Thing From Another World. The story will still be set in a Norwegian camp and chronicle how the shape-shifting alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp. Horror website Bloody-Disgusting actually reported all of this news earlier and has also said "Van Heijningen is pushing to make the lead character none other than R.J. MacReady's brother. »

The Thing Gets A Battlestar Galactica Makeover

28 January 2009 9:53 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Hollywood has latched onto The Thing as their latest property to remake. What you're loyal to John Carpeter's 1982 version? Sorry that was a remake too. Howard Hawks did it in 1951. Meanwhile they're all based on a short story. So at least there's a remake precedent here. What makes this remake so much more interesting than the average, soulless, Hollywood repurposing is the involvement of one Ron Moore. If that names sounds familiar to you, it's because you're a Battlestar Galactica fan and therefore also a super cool person. According to Variety Moore is the executive producer and most brilliant mind behind the new Battlestar, also frequently known as the best show on television. Universal Pictures has hired Moore to write the script for the movie and if they had any sense they would also hire him to direct it to. Universal does not have a lick of sense. Instead they've »

The Thing Prequel Writer and Director Named

You knew it was inevitable as talk has been steadily circulating for the past few months about Universal's prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter masterpiece The Thing. Well, a director and writer have officially been named.

Variety has just reported that Universal has brought aboard "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ron Moore to write the script and commercial director Matthijs Van Heijningen, Jr. (a hopefully crazy Swede) to direct the re-imagining.

From the Variety article:
