Why does recession bring with it a thirst for dumb revenge dramas?
Law Abiding Citizen, which I should say at the outset is a terrible, terrible movie – either the stupidest of the year so far or the most unintentionally funny – takes the urban revenge movie and grafts on to it certain depressing innovations from other genres, including the serial killer-as-genius trope from The Silence Of The Lambs, and the post-Saw/Hostel enthusiasm for torture-porn and mega bloodshed. Let's just say it doesn't tell us much except that the revenge movie is back with, um, a vengeance.
Gerard Butler plays a man who takes complicated, detailed and violent revenge against the killers who raped and murdered his wife and daughter. Thing is, he's already in jail when most of the killings occur (cue evil genius!), which doesn't stop one victim from being surgically deprived of various extremities, up to and including his Johnson (hello,

Here’s a list of some of the new movie and TV shows coming to DVD and Blu-ray this week that we’re looking forward to seeing. Also, there’s some classic, and not-so-classic, movies hitting Blu-ray for the first time this week as well.
Of all the new releases, we’re particularly interested in the Blu-ray versions of movies and TV shows such as G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, North by Northwest, It’s a Wonderful Life and The Rockford Files. Plus, there’s some classic Dr. Who coming out this week as well.

The films of gay Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar go in and out of print on DVD without any apparent rhyme or reason, so if you want to include his work in your home library, it's best to snap them up whenever you can.
This week sees three of his finest films getting new DVD releases. The Oscar-winning All About My Mother (newly remastered) still ranks as my very favorite of his movies, brilliantly mixing his gifts for outrageous comedy and tear-jerking melodrama. It's a "women's picture" in the very best sense.

Wings of Desire (Criterion Collection)
This is a huge week for major title releases on Blu-ray as Criterion's release of Wim Wenders's Wings of Desire is just the first of three titles I reviewed and most likely blew my word count for the next two weeks trying to get all of my thoughts squared away.

On top of the titles listed below I also watch the Criterion Blu-ray for Howards End and the Blu-ray for Warner Home Video's North By Northwest, both of which will be reviewed on Tuesday along with the Criterion Blu-ray for Wings of Desire. On top of that I watched the Blu-ray for Disney/Pixar's Up, which will be reviewed in a couple of weeks along with the Blu-ray versions of Monsters, Inc. and Cars.

I saw quite a bit this week, but some of it I have already detailed such as my reviews for Trucker and Tormented. I also watched the Blu-ray for Love, Actually (a personal favorite and a review is forth-coming) as well as the following three films.
The second two (The Sniper and 5 Against the House) are both from the November 3 release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Film Noir Collection Volume One. You can get more details on the complete set right here and I hope to discuss the other three films (The Big Heat, The Lineup and Murder by Contract) next Sunday or perhaps in a complete review.

Who Wants More Noir? Columbia's B-Movies Hit The Roxie

More good news for my favorite film genre! Back in May, I attended and wrote about the great “I Wake Up Dreaming” noir film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, hosted by Elliot Lavine. Showcasing old and rare B-movies from the 30s to the 50s, the festival was so successful that it was extended for another week.
Consider this a further extension two changing seasons later, as starting this Thursday Mr. Lavine will once again bring 22 rare noir gems to the Roxie for two weeks of betrayals, knife-sharp suspense and treacherous women.
This time around, the films are newly restored 35mm archive prints from Columbia Pictures—directed by acclaimed directors like Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Don Siegel, and king of gimmicks William Castle. As with “I Wake Up Dreaming,” the films are shown as double features: two films for $11.

I am sure most of you remember the collection of 12 teaser posters Turner Classic Movies released last July in celebration of their "Summer Under the Stars," which is their 31-day series of films featuring a new actor every day. One of the most revered slasher films of the 1980s comes home to Anchor Bay Entertainment as fans remember it… Happy Birthday To Me!
It’s time to blow out the candles and sharpen the shish-kebab spears, because the classic 1980s’ slasher favorite Happy Birthday to Me is coming to DVD, courtesy Anchor Bay Entertainment. Street date is October 13, 2009, with a Srp of $14.98.
This edition of the film, however, has something missing from the previous DVD release does not – the film’s haunting orchestral score, as composed by Bo Harwood and Lance Rubin, which was Not included on the first DVD release and which fans have been clamoring for.
It is yet another example of why Anchor Bay Entertainment is the undisputed leader in cult and classic horror home entertainment – they give the fans what they want.

We've all used the expression "they just don't make 'em like they used to," but in the case of Happy Birthday to Me, it's more than just a cliche. And now that the film is being re-released with the full restored score, we can hear it just like it was intended to sound.
