Trivia

The asylum kitchen maid sings the popular Victorian music hall song "The Rat Catcher's Daughter", written by the Rev. Edward Bradley and Sam Cowell in the early 1860s. In the song, the unnamed daughter drowns herself in the River Thames after being rejected by a man nicknamed "Lilly White Sand" (who sells sand dug out from the river's bank). In the last verse the remorseful Lilly White cuts his own throat with a shard from a broken pane of glass. Although not sung in the film, contemporary London audiences would recognised this musical nod to the previous scene where Rankin/Tennant has slashed the guard's neck in the same way. See more »

Goofs

One scene shows an evidence box from the Jack the Ripper case but the Haymarket Strangler that starts the movie took place in 1860 and the rest of the movie is 20 years later(1880). The Ripper killings were in 1888, 8 years after the movie takes place. See more »

Okay late Karloff can be a bit dull
26 August 2007 | by (Glen Cove, New York) – See all my reviews

Boris Karloff is a crusading novelist trying to change the British legal system by looking into the Haymarket Strangler case. Boris is convinced the man hung for the crime didn't do it. Of course his investigation turns up proof that he was right, and that he himself was the killer. Well made and well acted little thriller is on okay film to have on in the background. Recently released by Criterion as part of a 4 film set its an okay time killer best watched late at night. To be certain Karloff is wonderful to watch, especially in the scene where he finds the important piece of evidence which proves him right and also slides him into madness. However the mover isn't anything special and can be a bit dull (too much music). (The criterion commentary is excellent and the real reason to pick this up)
