Inspector Palmu works through a complex closed-room murder case
As the first non-Finnish reviewer of this movie, I will second the high esteem in which it is held by the 3 earlier reviewers.
A wealthy man known for his playboy activities is found in an indoor pool, also knocked on the head. The door was locked. A varied group of rather eccentric characters were in and around the house, due to a small party he had held. The house itself has some entrances, a basement, and inner connections that add to the mystery. It's not your average dwelling by any means. Neither are the police or Inspector Palmu, who are also memorable characters.
To absorb all this and relish it can easily take several viewings. The look of the film is a very sharp black and white. This adds greatly.
The acting is highly professional and smooth. Each character is brought out nicely amid a whole lot of complexity.
Although I correctly surmised the murderer well before the ending, I think it is not so obvious and it really doesn't matter much because the carryings-on of these quirky people are so entertaining and so well lensed.
One thing I liked about the story is that there were not too many murders. Sometimes in this kind of story, the bodies just keep piling up. Here there's but two and an attempted third.
