Call this MGM glossy a Metrocolor time capsule to 1961 when Southern California tract style suburban living was as popular as the Twist and fall out shelters.
'Bachelor' Bob Hope glides through this relaxing opus, ably assisted by adrenalin raising Janis Paige, looking particularly fetching in a very tight, light blue, sleeveless dress. Watching her climb on a chair wearing white high heels to reach for an item on the top shelf in Hope's kitchen is a true exercise in feminine balance guaranteed to unbalance any male viewer.
Paula Prentiss and Jim Hutton are again reunited on screen to add sparks to the otherwise tranquil setting of palm trees, manicured lawns and oh so colorful pastel interiors. In this context, Hope aptly refers to his living room as "early Disneyland." John McGiver lends his distinctive talent to an ensemble which stars Lana Turner as Bob Hope's love interest. Miss Turner is tailor-made in perfectly coiffured fashion and temperament for the laid-back Southern California motif, as graceful and elegant as the on screen TWA Boeing 707 is to the cloudless blue skies.
Henry Mancini's sprightly, yet soothing theme provides a suitable backdrop to the warm, sun kissed environment replete with bright supermarkets(you can almost smell the fresh produce next to the pyramid stacked canned goods waiting for an accident to happen)and drive-in restaurants serving burgers and shakes by the tray.
So please lower your driver's window halfway and enjoy the show.
