Commoner and revolutionary Robert Hossein leads a small band of Mexicans taking the captured daughhter of the President to their General
23 February 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Robert Hossein, Mario Adorf and Hans Neubert play 3 ordinary Mexican revolutionaries. Hossein is the leader of a group that attacks a government soldier-train and accidentally captures the daughter of the President. She's played by the beautiful Giovanna Ralli. Hossein decides to transport her back to their own leader. He, Adorf and Neubert embark on this mission, passing through territory infested with government soldiers. Adorf challenges Hossein; he wants to ransom her for money. Hossein wants to exchange her for prisoners. The story shows their journey and their encounters.

This is a carefully, thoughtfully and beautifully done story set in Mexico of 3 lower-level revolutionaries who have a prize, the daughter of the President, and are transporting her back to their general. Many memorable and beautiful images dot this widescreen black/white movie. Hossein lets us savor long shots and keeps the dialog to a minimum. The experience we have in the images and tone of the movie bring out the emotion of it and its themes.

The movie is understated in traditional respects. There is not a violent battle scene, for example, and a love affair between Hossein and Ralli is hinted at but not depicted. In other respects, it is not understated. It simply uses images to state its ideas. These can be striking, as in a vista on a long street with revolutionaries who have been hung lining the street; or a sinuous train of soldiers on horses mingling with revolutionaries chained together who are being shot. The natural surroundings are very beautiful lakes and hills around bare valleys or corn fields. They call out to the men who inhabit them for which there is no end of fighting.
