Parents Guide for
Yojimbo (1961) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

A reference to geisha. A woman tells a man that he can do whatever he wants with three geisha. As lower-class geisha were little more than prostitutes, this is a clear sexual reference. Sanjuro rescues a woman from rape.

Violence & Gore

There are numerous combat scenes in the film. Most of them are of bloodless violence, yet there are some points where bloody wounds do appear on characters. Sanjuro, as an antihero, is shown to be unmoved by violence (after one fight, casually ordering the cooper to make two caskets, looking back and amending the order to three caskets). Ushitora shoots a number of men during the film's run.

Profanity

Mild swearing depending on the translation. The Japanese includes uses of the words "Chikusho" and "kuso" (traditionally translated out to "damn" or "damn it" and "shit," respectively).

Sanjuro and other characters drink a large amount of sake during the film.

There are a couple of intense scenes. Early on in the film, a dog runs through the streets, carrying a human hand. Later, Sanjuro is savagely beaten after finally being captured by one of the two gang lords.
