A Documentary is Just a Feature Film In Disguise: An Interview with Werner Herzog

14 December 2009 11:15 PM, PST | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

Above: Werner Herzog looks into the camera's mouth of madness while Nicholas Cage contemplates insanity on the set of The Bad Lieutenant.

Around the time Tom Waits simultaneously released his albums Alice and Blood Money, he was regularly asked why he was putting out two titles at once?  His common reply: “If yer gonna fire up the griddle, you might as well make more than one pancake.”

Werner Herzog seems to have taken a cue from Waits (it’s not hard to imagine the two getting along) with the release of his first two productions in the United States since 1978’s Stroszek.  The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, a madman’s delusional romp and bayou fever-dream that revolves, reeling, around Nicolas Cage’s highly entertaining—even genius—performance, came out last month.  It was followed yesterday by the release of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done, »

If You Meet Sartana, Pray For Your Death

14 December 2009 3:20 PM, PST | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

An insurance fiddle on a strongbox of gold is initiated by a scheming cabal of town dignitaries in Gianfranco Parolini's 1968 angel of death film ... If You Meet Sartana, Pray For Your Death. Into the breach steps the Sartana (Gianni Garko), the most stylish character ever to set foot in the usually grubby and sweat-drenched world of the Spaghetti Western. He takes it upon himself to serve justice upon the outlaws, Mexican bandits and corrupt officialdom, in the process walking away with a coffin-load of loot, as he influences events, turns up unexpectedly, or simply takes matters into his own hands with the silver Sharp's Derringer and Winchester rifle that play integral roles in his personal arsenal.

Ample death, ample destruction and muchos double-crossing quickly follow.

Sartana, to give it the more popular and less unwieldy title, brings together such heavyweights of the Spaghetti Western genre as Gianni Garko (Blood At Sundown, »

New TV on DVD releases this week

23 November 2009 3:00 PM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Finally, season 4 of Alfred Hitchcock Presents is on DVD. I say finally because this season contains one of my favorite episodes of any TV series ever, "Man with a Problem," with Elizabeth Montgomery, Gary Merrill, and Peter Mark Richman. It has a great twist ending (you can watch it here). I have to start buying this show on DVD.

The Golden Age of Television DVD is a Criterion Collection set and includes some great live TV episodes, including "Marty," "Days of Wine and Roses," "The Comedian," "Requiem for a Heavyweight," "No Time For Sergeants," "A Wind from the South," and "Bang The Drum Slowly." Also comes with extensive commentaries and interviews and a booklet.

DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

Weekly DVD Drinking Game: Wrong Turn 3

20 October 2009 4:58 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

We at Fsr love to drink. And we know that many of you love to drink, as well. This shared love has led us to a brand new (though not exactly new) feature here at Fsr: The Weekly DVD Drinking Game. Every week we will chose a DVD release and give you a few simple steps toward drunken stupidity (or cinematic tolerance). This week... Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times, shame on the mutants! It’s the third time around for the cannibal mutants to feed on not-so-innocent people who wander into the West Virginia woods. Wrong Turn 3 brings more murder, mayhem (and a few boobs as well) to the woods again on DVD and Blu-ray. And now, to cover our butts… This game is only for people over the age of 21. Please drink responsibly, and don’t mess with the cannibal mutants in West Virginia. Take »

Celebrate 50 Years of 'The Twilight Zone' Next Month

4 September 2009 4:32 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We're about a month away from a very cool event at Ithaca College in New York, one that should be of keen interest to fans of science fiction, the history of television, and just damn good writing. The college hosts the Rod Serling Conference, and Serling, of course, created and wrote The Twilight Zone. He also taught at Ithaca from 1967 - 1975.

Naturally, the Rod Serling Archives are also housed at the college, and this year's Conference marks the 50th anniversary of The Twilight Zone, and since Serling wrote well over half of the episodes, it stands to reason that this will be a pretty good collection of all things Serling.

The event will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 2nd and 3rd, and you can get all the specific details at Ithaca College's Serling page. There are about 20 sessions at this year's conference, ranging from adapting The Twilight Zone »

Event Report: AMPAS' Tribute to FX Legend Dick Smith

29 June 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In Hollywood, it is celebrity which makes headlines, but what lasts longest in this industry is respect The key to respect is something nobody on Earth has the time or experience to analyze, but it is an easy thing to gauge: if you were at AMPAS’s tribute to legendary makeup artist Dick Smith, you saw respect in the eyes of the likes of Rick Baker, Linda Blair, and Hal Holbrook. This salute drew the newsworthy likes of J.J. Abrams and John Landis, but this was merely the audience. The great make-up artist Rick Baker moderated panels that included actor Linda Blair, recent Oscar-winner Greg Cannom, and a host of others who came to express their gratitude for this titan of make-up. You also saw a love for the art of makeup, and, indeed, love for the mastery of any art form, whether it be cinematic or otherwise. And you »

What Makes Sammy Run?-Koch Vision

18 March 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

This has a soft place in my heart not only because it truly is a lost gem but because it sits in such good company. As troubled a period as the 1950s and 1960s were it’s become so fashionable to point this out that it’s easy to forget the vast number of really quality examinations of the business culture produced during the period.  A Face In The Crowd and satires like Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter barely scratch the surface. Fans of the social commentary of Rod Serling who penned such powerful commentary on American business culture and personal ambition as Requiem For A Heavyweight and Patterns should go out of their way to catch What Makes Sammy Run? Sammy Glick starts off his corporate career as a copy boy but rises to the top by manipulation and cut throat tactics. Based on Budd Schulbergs highly controversial 1941 novel What Makes Sammy Run? »
