Storyline

Diplomats, soldiers and other representatives of a dozen nations fend off the siege of the International Compound in Peking during the 1900 Boxer Rebellion. The disparate interests unite for survival despite competing factions, overwhelming odds, delayed relief and tacit support of the Boxers by the Empress of China and her generals. Written by Martin H. Trivia

Producer Samuel Bronston wanted Deborah Kerr for the role of the Baroness, whilst Charlton Heston suggested either Jeanne Moreau or Melina Mercouri for the part. However, director Nicholas Ray insisted on Ava Gardner playing her. Tom Courtenay and Peter McEnery were mentioned for supporting roles, but neither finally appeared in the film. See more »

Goofs

Anachronisms: The American Flag shown in the opening sequence has 43 stars. A 43 star flag was only flown from 1890-1891. The stars are also unusual. All of the examples I can find are an 8 star row at the top and 5 seven star rows. The movie flag has the 8 star row on the bottom. See more »
