Is This the World's Worst Film Critic?

Hate and ye shall have a voice. Exercise shocking taste and ye shall have a voice!
I guess it was inevitable. News programs have slowly become overrun with sensationalism, voices comfortably spewing out the most shocking commentaries they can, annoying those who disagree and rile up those who love a little inappropriate sass with their politics. And it's only natural that this would slowly leak into the movie reviewing world. Guardian has thrown up a love/hate piece for film critic Fiore Mastracci, who they call "a critic so dreadful he's bordering on genius." A once under-the-radar critic, his review of The Road has been making the rounds.
Where many critics love flicks like The Road or Fantastic Mr. Fox, Fiore is a lover of Punisher: War Zone, The Pink Panther (2006), Hitman, Transporter 2... In other words, he's that Regular Joe type moviegoer who equates good cinema with those brainless adventures on the big screen.

With a calling card of 'celluloid excrement' – which he's applied to films from The Road to Fantastic Mr Fox and Watchmen – Fiore Mastracci is a critic so dreadful he's bordering on genius
A confession: I'm obsessed with a film critic. His name is Fiore Mastracci, and he's the worst film critic in the world. You know how some people are so bad they're good? Not Fiore. He's so bad, he's flipped all the way around, bypassed good, gone into bad again, come out the other end and dipped into genius.
He used to be my little secret. But no longer. His latest brilliant (ie awful) review – about Cormac McCarthy adaptation The Road – has hit the Twitterverse. He calls it "excrement on celluloid". He lambasts child actor Kodi Smit-McPhee for having a double-barrelled surname ("Why? Because we were going to be confused by all the other Kodi McPhees in Tinsel Town?

'The Hobbit' Stays With MGM Despite Financial Woes, But How Long Can They Delay The Inevitable?

Last week, it looked like Sauron had joined forces with the best of James Bond's rogue's gallery to kill off the denizens of the Shire and 007 himself. Or, in less ridiculous terms, MGM was in big trouble, facing the possible loss of both the Bond franchise and "The Hobbit" due to seemingly insurmountable financial woes.
But nothing is insurmountable, my friends, particularly where hobbits are concerned. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that MGM has been rescued by key lenders, securing enough cash to continue development on "The Hobbit," which is being produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Guillermo Del Toro as a two-part feature.
Still, the company isn't entirely out of Mirkwood just yet. The lending deal is merely a delay measure, meaning that MGM doesn't have to pay off its debts -- allegedly in the ballpark of $170 million -- until December 15, 2009. It's enough of a handout for MGM

As a kid, point-and-click PC adventure games were my be-all and end-all. Sierra, in particular, with their almost uniformly awesome "Quest" titles ("King's Quest," "Space Quest," "Police Quest"), and their bawdy "Leisure Suit Larry" series, held a prime spot in my heart. I awaited their every new release with baited breath and consumed them with a fervor that led me, on more than one occasion, to secretly spend my parents' hard-earned cash on Sierra's 1-900 automated hint lines.
Sierra's genre adventures were the standard by which I judged all other games, but in 1990, that benchmark was not only met but surpassed by "The Secret of Monkey Island," a LucasArts romp cast in a Sierra mold but steeped with a liveliness and rollicking humor that struck me as revolutionary. 19 years later, the game remains an all-time great, which is why it was with great anticipation -- and more than a bit

Let The Right One In (Magnolia) An awkward 12 year-old boy, ignored by his mother and the target of bullies, finds himself drawn to his new neighbor: a girl his own age who only appears at night, and seems herself to be as lonely an outcast as he. Haunting film from Sweden is best described as The 400 Blows meets Nosferatu, and contains some of the most haunting imagery of any film in recent memory. Truly a unique and memorable work. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Featurette; Photo and poster gallery. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.
Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount offers two more classic titles, restored, remastered and loaded with extras. Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief stars Cary Grant as a retired jewel thief trying to enjoy his sunset years on the French Riviera with a minimum of drama, until he catches the eye of a high-maintenance heiress (Grace Kelly,

The Pink Panther 2 Movie Review

There are many things you can't top. You can't top a nice ice cream on a hot Sunday afternoon, you can't top a nice cup of tea with a slice of Victoria sponge and you most certainly can't top 'Elevenses' when you're feeling peckish after a spot of morning breakfast. But away with these posh middle class comparisons and to the point of this extremely long winded paragraph, you can't top Peter Sellers.
Call me a retrospective old fart who loves old movies more than new ones and curses the day he was born as being 'too early' if you want, but I think it's fairly undisputable fact ...

"The Pink Panther 2" review. It’s amazing that the movie makers had the audacity to remake the classic to begin with.

Growing up, I can remember being a little confused at the Pink Panther concept. I’d seen the cartoon, with a short little detective in a trench coat chasing after a literally pink panther. Then I slowly became aware that there were live action movies that I was too young to stay up for. I finally got to see them: and was bored to find out there was no real panther. The “Pink Panther” was a diamond, and the detective was a star.
Which then was the real Pink Panther?
I got older and soon discovered that while Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau wasn’t the pink panther; he was the real star of The Pink Panther. And he is classic. To this day, I will occasionally use a bad Clouseau accent and talk about answering the “phun” or dismantling a “buhm.”

This week is a breath of fresh air compared to recent weeks as we have more than just one title to talk about with Jason Bourne coming to Blu-ray and the film I deemed to be the best of 2008 coming home on DVD and Blu-ray. We also have the very good Roman Polanski doc and the old school Pink Panther Collection arrives with the original Pink Panther available on DVD and Blu-ray.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Yup, Woody Allen's romance was my favorite film of 2008 and Genius Products didn't even send me a screener. Boooooo! But I have already ordered the Blu-ray release from Amazon and expect it any day and I suggest you do the same. This is a great little film with two of the better performances of the year from Penelope Cruz and most notably Rebecca Hall.
