Gomer Pyle was a sweet but not too smart Marine from Mayberry, North Carolina who was stationed at Camp Henderson near Los Angeles, California. Gomer's innocence, naivete and low-key demeanor often got him into trouble, most frequently at the hands of his loud-mouthed superior, Sgt. Carter. Duke, Frankie, Lester and Larry were some of Gomer's pals and fellow enlisted men at Camp Henderson, and Lou Anne Poovie was his sometimes girlfriend. Written by

The show ended after five seasons, despite good ratings, because Jim Nabors announced he wanted to do a musical-variety show, which became The Jim Nabors Hour (1969), running from 1969-1971. The producers considered continuing this show, using the remaining regular cast (much as The Andy Griffith Show (1960) became Mayberry R.F.D. Sgt. Carter is listed as having won the WWII Victory Medal. Yet in the show it is stated that he has been a marine for 14 or 16 years. Since the show started in 1964, he would have joined the marines sometime after 1948, too late for the WWII medal. See more »

I ve always enjoyed "Gomer Pyle" Frank Sutton played Vince Carter so well..certainly one of the great supporting actors in television. Of course the situations Gomer got into were a bit unbelievable, but after all it was escapist TV in he 60's.
The first season of theshow will be released in December with commentaries and some extras including a clip from the Jim Nabors Hour, which also starred Ronnie Schell and Frank Sutton.
One of the reviewers mentioned Ronnie Schell was with the show the entire run. He was not in the 1967-68 season. He starred in a short lived sitcom with Joby Baker "Good Morning World" He did return in 1968 as a corporal for the remainder of the series.
