James Cameron: The Vanity Fair Interview

7 hours ago | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

On the set of Avatar. From left: Sigourney Weaver, Joel David Moore, James Cameron, and Sam Worthington. The journey of James Cameron’s Avatar follows steadily in the wake of his last movie, Titanic: after enduring months of bluster in the doomsaying press over its cost and its hype and its director’s hubris, the science-fiction epic finally screened for critics last night to near unanimous raves, and is destined to become a modern classic. And though it may not equal Titanic’s record-setting $1.8 billion at the box office, it will likely recuperate its exorbitant production costs. The king of the world has done it again. Avatar is about a paraplegic ex-marine (Sam Worthington) sent to the lush, iridescent jungles of a distant moon to learn the ways of a the Na’vi, a fearless, soulful, cobalt blue, alien race after mindmelding with a human-engineered Na’vi doppleganger—his avatar. »

Parks & Recreation Writer To Pen High School Lottery Movie

9 December 2009 2:49 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

For those who don't know, or have never seen The Player, most Hollywood pitches are sold as a mix between two formally successful projects or ideas. An example of this would be to say Twilight is a mix between Interview With A Vampire and getting bamboo shoots forced under your fingernails. In addition to proving that there truly are very few original ideas left out there, these pitches also give an idea of what the film will be about before any details are given out about the actual project. It would be all too easy to pass on "Blade Runner meets Mary Poppins," "The Godfather meets Porky's," or "a teen version of 21." Oh shit, that last one is real. According to Variety, 20th Century Fox, under its Dos Tontos label, has picked up a pitch by Parks & Recreation writer Alan Yang, entitled Jackpot. The film will be about a group »

Larry Flynt Seeks Pounds of Flesh

9 December 2009 2:21 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

By Steven Mikulan

Busloads of children lined up outside the Ahmanson Theater this morning for a special performance for “Mary Poppins,” while down Temple Street quite another show was taking place for grownups.

Porn baron Larry Flynt’s trademark-infringement lawsuit against family members was in its second day. Unlike Tuesday, Room 14 of the U.S. District Courthouse was virtually devoid of the spectators and media who’d left it in the wake of Flynt’s gilded wheelchair a... »

'Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle': Maybe Christmas specials don't have to be good

6 December 2009 6:24 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Okay, I'll say it upfront, I'm not a big fan Christmas movies, so the thought of sitting through Debbie Macomber's Mrs. Miracle wasn't exactly my idea of a perfect night in. The Hallmark Channel film, which premiere Saturday night, starred James Van Der Beek as a widowed father of twins desperately seeking nanny, while Doris Roberts played the geriatric version of Mary Poppins. (She didn't crinkle her nose or snap her fingers to make magic happen, the sound mix took care of that.) You could predict the formulaic plot line of this special ten minutes in. The 6-year-old boys »

This Week on Stage: Cate Blanchett stars in 'A Streetcar Named Desire'

5 December 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Stage fans, we find ourselves on a weekend where lots of the star-driven shows on the boards -- ranging from Oleanna and After Miss Julie to A Steady Rain and Hamlet -- are set to close. Single tear. But, never fear! A handful of great new shows have opened in the last week, too, so you're covered. Reviews of five new shows went up on EW.com this week: our critics' takes on the touring production of The 101 Dalmatians Musical (B-); and off-Broadway entries The Brother/Sister Plays (A), This (B+), The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (C+), and A Streetcar Named Desire »

'44 Inch Chest' Character Profiles Full of Character

30 November 2009 12:26 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

All of a sudden, this one has my attention. I saw the poster over the Thanksgiving break, and even with the great cast, I just didn't know enough about 44 Inch Chest before I saw a series of new character profiles featuring Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson, Ray Winstone, and John Hurt.

These things are great, and you couple them with the filmmakers responsible for Sexy Beast, and why in the world wouldn't it have my attention? McShane, who plays a gay mobster in the film, said that this movie makes Sexy Beast "look like Mary Poppins." That...would take some doing.

Oh, and I need to warn you that while three of the profiles are just fine, the John Hurt one - Old Man Peanut - is not safe for any workplace that might frown on the F-bomb. »

Q: I am a huge fan of author E. Lynn Harris and was made very sad by his passing. What does the E. stand for? And will any of his works be made into movies? – Pat, Milwaukee, Wi

The late E. Lynn Harris

A: The “E” stands for “Everette,” which is such a cool name that it’s a shame he chose to go only by his first initial.

According to Bet, Harris had previously sold the movie rights to most of his twelve published books and two unreleased ones, but there is currently some confusion as to who exactly owns those rights.

Still, several books already have movies in the works, and scripts have been written for three: Not a Day Goes By, I Say a Little Prayer, »

This Week on Stage: 'Fela!' rocks, Matthew Broderick disappoints

27 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Former American Idol contestant Syesha Mercado may be the biggest known name in the revival of Dreamgirls that kicked off its national tour at Harlem's famed Apollo Theatre this week, but it's an unknown named Moya Angela who's generating all the buzz as Effie "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" White, according to EW's Tanner Stransky. Also this week, the booty-shaking biographical Afrobeat musical Fela! (pictured at left) opened on Broadway to widespread raves (including a B+ from EW), while a fine cast headed by a lifeless Matthew Broderick struggled in director/playwright Kenneth Lonergan's disappointing new Off Broadway comic drama, »

This Week on Stage: 'Ragtime,' 'Equivocation' in L.A., and vibrators!

21 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A. Also on Broadway, Sarah Ruhl's provocatively titled comic play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play opened to a decidedly lukewarm review from yours truly: "Ruhl's play could have benefited from a broader, farcical touch." Elsewhere on Broadway, the Julia Stiles-Bill Pullman revival of David Mamet's Oleanna announced plans to close on Jan. 3. Off Broadway, we raved about both Alan Ayckbourn's My »

A New Toms Shoe Line Debuts at Bergdorf Goodman

19 November 2009 1:56 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Blake Mycoskie has proved that he can wear his Toms shoes on the red carpet. But can he win over ladies who lunch? Photographs from PatrickMcMullan.com. Blake Mycoskie, the founder of Toms shoes, was standing on the fifth floor of Bergdorf Goodman this afternoon in New York City surveying the setup of his new, limited-edition footwear display when a chicly dressed, middle-aged woman approached him. Mycoskie is, after all, fairly easy to recognize, thanks to his prolific "More Bars in More Places" At&T commercial. "I just have to tell you," the woman said to Mycoskie, "that when my feet get uncomfortable wearing these"—she gestured to her chunky high-heeled shoes—"I wear these." And out of her big black Chanel bag she pulled a pair of glittery blue Toms slip-ons. This Mary Poppins moment was proof that Mycoskie's latest project has, well, feet. Timeless and Timely 'Mary Poppins' Premieres in Los Angeles

18 November 2009 8:14 AM, PST | BroadwayWorld.com | See recent BroadwayWorld.com news »

Many people rightly consider “Mary Poppins” a timeless classic. Well, with the new musical’s Los Angeles premiere Sunday night at the Ahmanson Theater, you can also call it timely. While it first premiered in London five years ago in a very different economic and social climate, seeing it now, amidst the current economic crisis and the want to go ‘back to basics’, the stage musical seems more appropriate, meaningful and heartfelt. We could all use a little “Mary Poppins” in our lives, to teach us all that the love of family is more important than anything else. »

This Week on Stage: 'The Understudy,' 'Idiot Savant,' and 'Nightingale'

7 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

Review: Did you ever see… Who Framed Roger Rabbit

5 November 2009 4:01 PM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

This week sees the release of the year’s first Christmas movie, Robert ZemeckisA Christmas Carol. The latest in a long line of adaptations of this classic story, Zemeckis has made it using his motion capture animation. This is the third movie Zemeckis has made using the technique, having perfected it after Polar Express and Beowulf. Zemeckis has been interested in combining human actors and animation for a long time. With news breaking last week of a sequel in development, it’s the perfect time to look back at 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Following huge success with Back to the Future in 1985, Robert Zemeckis was in big demand. This allowed him the clout to take hold of  what would be a hugely ambitious project. Live action had been combined with animation previously, most notably in Mary Poppins. No-one yet, however, had attempted a feature length movie.

A Christmas Carol: 3D motion-capture has arrived in time for Christmas

5 November 2009 2:09 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Dir: Robert Zemeckis Cast: Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins Last night saw the breaking of a few festive world records in a decidedly Dickensian Leicester Square. Firstly, opera singer Andrea Bocelli lead the largest Christmas Carol ‘sing-along’ from the Square, as revellers across London joined in after the official ‘turning on’ of the Christmas lights. Then Disney, in collaboration with Sky Movies HD, hosted the largest ever ‘3D premiere’ for their new film ‘A Christmas Carol’. Anyone who worries that Christmas has sold its soul should have headed to central London last night: Disney have bought the entire centre’s Christmas lights, so Jim Carey’s performance-captured face will be staring down at us from all over the shopping district until the dawn of 2010. But in Disney’s defence – and not wanting to cry ‘humbug’ too loud on this joyous occasion – the premiere was a success and »

Basil lost his father to a landmine during the Algerian war, his mother to some sanitarium in the aftermath, and his childhood to St Peter’s Needle in some generic religious boarding school. Our story kicks in, thirty years later, with an adult Basil nearly losing his life to some stray bullet during a shootout on the doorstep of his video-rental store.

After quite a time in hospital and with the bullet still firmly lodged in his brain, he returns to his day to day life to find his apartment locked down, his property stolen, and his job gone. The only compensation he will get from the video store is the spent cartridge from his new leaded friend.
