Free Flick of the Day: Hang 'Em High

24 November 2009 5:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

After nominating For a Few Dollars More and The Good the Bad and the Ugly for Free Flick of the Day, I'm going to sound like a very old and tired drum by nominating Hang 'Em High. But hey, you need something to watch today and it's just sitting there, waiting for someone to notice it.

Hang 'Em High isn't a great film by any means, and it's not a very remarkable Western. It's full of missed opportunities, and the end hints that there may have been plans for a franchise centered around Marshall Jed Cooper. It's notable because it was the first film Clint Eastwood produced with his Malpaso shingle, which he would obviously go onto do great things with. (Would there be an Unforgiven without Hang 'Em High? Probably, but who knows!) It's also his first post-Sergio Leone Western, and one of the first attempts to bring Leone's style to America. »

Watch the 'Man With No Name' Trilogy on YouTube

22 November 2009 12:01 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Trilogies make for good conversation fodder. My preferred trio is the Bourne movies, because the first movie was really good and then the series got better and, inexplicably, even better in round three. That just doesn't happen that much. But you could argue Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, even The Godfather, on the strength of the first two movies.

Not to be overlooked is Sergio Leone's Man With No Name Trilogy, the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns of the 1960s that were influential in moving the western out of its traditional forms to more complicated heroic figures (or are they heroic at all?) and giving it the kind of narrative and cinematic overhaul the genre desperately needed.

Between now and November 30th, MGM is providing A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly free on YouTube. You can't beat free, »

Free Flick of the Day: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

13 November 2009 2:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you were anxious for another free dose of Sergio Leone after last week's suggestion of For a Few Dollars More, you're in luck! The third and final installment of the Dollars / Man With No Name Trilogy just happens to be up on SlashControl right now. I can't think of a better gang to spend Friday the 13th with than The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is an epic, dizzying adventure set in the middle of the Civil War, and circles around three unsavory fellows and their hunt for a fortune in Confederate gold. It's probably the most famous and the most popular of Leone's westerns and Ennio Morricone's soundtracks. Every moment of this film is iconic. But the best part of the film isn't the sweeping battles, the mournful soldiers, or the explosive shoot-outs; it's the hateful alliance between Blondie »

The "Dollars Trilogy" Free on Hulu

5 November 2009 10:27 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

A quick heads-up for Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood fans. All three of their "Man with No Name" westerns are now up on Hulu for free viewing. Hulu is only going to have these movies up until the end of November, so don't waste time, pilgrim. You can watch all three films right here.

A Fistful of Dollars originally followed the trend of remaking Akira Kurosawa's samurai films as westerns. I say trend, but really there was only, what, The Magnificent Seven? Fistful uses the plot of Kurosawa's Yojimbo as its premise, then reshapes it into Leone's own signature style. Then came the pseudo-sequel, For a Few Dollars More. Leone never meant for the three films to be a trilogy, but it just turned out that way due to Eastwood's same look and acting style in all three.  The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is a prequel of sorts, »

Free Flick of the Day: For A Few Dollars More

2 November 2009 11:18 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I think the mania for Sergio Leone is stronger than it's ever been. It's undoubtedly due to the championing of Quentin Tarantino, and films like Sukiyaki Western Django and The Good, the Bad and the Weird, which are driving fans to seek out where they borrowed their serapes and squints from. There also seems to simply be a hunger for good adventure stories and rugged antiheroes, and there's no better place to get sated than Leone's films. If you feel like spending two hours in the broiling sun with a man who'll shoot you as soon as look at you, then you'll love today's free flick: For A Few Dollars More.

For A Few Dollars More might be my favorite of the Dollars Trilogy. I love them all on their own merits, but this installment stands on its own (I hate saying it, but Fistful is decidedly less cool after »

Inglourious Basterds (review)

1 August 2009 4:44 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Inglourious Basterds Directed by Quentin Tarantino Normally I approach a new Tarantino film with caution because more often than not, due to his fame and talent, his movies are severely hyped in the months leading up to their release; they are promoted with so much zeal and accompanied by so many industry buzz-words that I usually end up being slightly disappointed with the final product. It was the case with Kill Bill 1-2 and Death Proof. For Inglourious Basterds, however, I purposefully avoided reading early reviews (it has been screening at various festivals since Cannes) so that I could go in with a fresh mind and the opportunity to truly judge it for myself. In true Tarantino style, the movie is split up into chapters - five to be exact, which move the plot along extremely well. Most people who have only seen one or two trailers for this movie »

Five: Spaghetti Westerns not directed by Sergio Leone

10 June 2009 2:01 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

Jeffman from Head Full Of Snow recommends five Spaghetti Westerns not directed by Sergio Leone.

A bruised and battered stalwart of the late night cinema circuit, the Spaghetti Western held a bastardised, custom-job revolver to the head of its inferior American cousin and relieved it of both its basic premise and last shred of decency; joyously blurring the line between right and wrong and leaving morality swinging from a ragged noose in the hot, desert sun.

The Spaghetti Western was an Italian phenomenon, mostly financed by Rome's famous Cinecitta Studios, although there were plenty of co-productions with other Euro countries like Spain and Germany, even stretching as far afield as Israel if you count the soul-sapping awfulness that is God's Gun. One man is responsible for popularising the Spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone. If you're a follower of LateMag's frequent forays into the weird and wonderful worlds of cult cinema you'll probably know his films already. »

'The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly' Comes to Blu-Ray

15 March 2009 5:30 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Last night, I was thisclose to picking up A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More on one of those bargain two-movie DVD things. I didn't, even though it's a bargain, because they really deserve a big, splashy DVD re-release. Plus I already have Fistful. But I wondered about these Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood classics being released on Blu-ray, and what do you know...

On May 12th, MGM and Fox Home Video will re-issue The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly on Blu-ray. And if you get it through the Fox store (where you can currently pre-order it), you can practically steal one of the great westerns of all time, and certainly the most influential one in the last 40 years. How does $23.99 sound? What a great deal.

In addition to the film, rated as the fourth-best movie of all time on IMDb, you can load up on the special features, »
