Various stories popping up on Variety over the past few days that we feel warrant a bit of attention. One of cinema’s great cinematic pairings is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, who as of their latest project, the highly anticipated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, have worked together seven times. It’s a pairing that has worked very well every single time (as far as I’m concerned).
It’s no surprise then that the duo are continuing to work together, with a feature film adaptation of ABC’s 1960s gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows, being next on their slate. This project has been rumored for a very long time, with Depp finally coming on-board (along with his company) to produce in 2007 and Burton coming onboard as director in 2008.
Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory scribe, John August, wrote the Dark Shadows screenplay, and just this summer Depp confirmed it’s definitely happening and that he’d be starring in it, if and when the project gets off the ground. »

With Hollywood's vampire obsession threatening to bleed the genre dry, master of the gothic Tim Burton is now adding his own project to the pile with a feature film adaptation of the TV series Dark Shadows.
The cult classic aired from 1966 to 1971 and starred Jonathan Frid as 200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins, among its many supernatural creatures. A TV remake ran in 1991.
Johnny Depp will play the part of Collins in Burton's big-screen remake.
Last October, Entertainment Weekly claimed the project was dead but producer Graham King has now told Sci Fi Wire it's very much alive and moving forward: "We're actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny.
"We've been working on the script a lot, even though [Tim's] working on Alice. We've been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We're making some changes, but the film's going to be in production, »

It's one of the cultiest of all cult shows with a loyal (if tiny) following, but we'll excuse you if you've never heard of Dark Shadows. Running from 1966 to 1971 on Us TV, it was a cheesy gothic horror series focusing on vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) and the spooky goings on in his Maine hometown, which was filled with all manner of supernatural beings. According to producer Graham King, Tim Burton is on board to direct a movie version from a script by John August, who was also responsible for penning Charlie and...

While this is only incremental news, Sci-Fi Wire sat down in a roundtable with Dark Shadows producer Graham King, who confirmed that Tim Burton’s remake will begin shooting sometime next fall. Burton is currently finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland, set for a March 5th, 2010 release, and prepping the Dark Shadows script with the screenwriters. According to Sci-Fi Wire: “We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice,” King continued. “We’ve been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.” Dark Shadows was a TV series that ran on ABC between 1966 and 1971. It had gothic elements that were considered bold for TV at the time. One of the more popular characters, vampire Barnabas Collins, as played by Jonathan Frid in the original, »

From working FX on SNL and Letterman to creating monsters for Dark Shadows, Andrew Clement has some tales to tell. Recently-wrapped on the reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street (for which he redesigned Freddy Krueger), Jason Anders caught up with Clement for a candid conversation about his world of Creative Character Engineering.
Ja/Fangoria: So let's begin with your work as a make-up artist for NBC's Saturday Night Live; tell me about the work you did for the show, how you became involved, the memories you have being around the cast of actors, and which seasons you were involved in.
AC: I wish I had been involved in the first few seasons of SNL, it was such a fertile time for the show. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’m not quite that old. As it is, I watched those shows in Jr. High and High School, and now I have the DVD’s. »

Dark Shadows holds such an unusual place in television history that it almost feels like a dream, not an actual show. Begun in 1966 as a 30-minute daytime drama with gothic trappings, Dark Shadows quickly moved beyond the standard mix of romantic entanglements and murder mysteries and started incorporating ghosts, witches, and—in a move that briefly made the show a phenomenon—vampires. Dark Shadows has the basic feel of a soap opera, with its dragged-out conversations, washed-out lighting, broad one-take performances, and close-ups that give way to extreme close-ups. But the writing has an elevated quality that matches the »

It's not a myth. They are among us -- in book stores, on movie screens, TV sets and billboards, in graphic novels and video games all across the land. The vampire genre has been with us since Dr. John Polidori's 1819 The Vampyre, followed by Bram Stoker's 1897 neck-biter, through the silent screen's Nosferatu (1922), the Bela Lugosi movies from the 1930s and '40s, Hammer Horror films ('50s and '60s,) TV's Dark Shadows (1966-1971), Anne Rice's best seller Interview with a Vampire (1976), and Buffy the Vampire Slayer series (1997-2001). While each had singular popularity, vampires' fictional presence has never been greater than it is today. Stephanie Meyer is the current queen of vamp-lit with a reported 70 million copies of the Twilight series sold, followed by the super-hit Twilight movie. Alan Ball's Southern Gothic sanguine potboiler, "True Blood", the HBO series that hearkens a bit of "Dark Shadows" and a smidge of "Twilight," is a fertile ground for real life romance. Lead actors Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, who play Bill and Sookie respectively, are engaged. They kept their romance on the down low, until around Comic Con time when they sat together in panel. Now, the heartthrob bad boy Vampire of the series, Eric, played to the hilt by Alexander Skarsgard, is allegedly dating his guest starring Queen of the Vampires, Evan Rachel Wood. Website Lainey_Gossip got photographic evidence and a source who blabbed the couple were spotted all over New Orleans, hand in hand. Lainey claims »

9:56 pm: Watched Far from Heaven again last night to pre-soak my mind in autumnal-leafed alienation and lay down an early groove. Betty's dad as driving instructor—what could possibly go wrong? Nice of you to join us, Don, for the Jai alai meeting. I've always wanted to go to a Jai alai club—there's one in Delaware the Metroliner always whooshed by whenever I went back and forth to Baltimore. And of course there was a flash of Jai alai in the opening credits of Miami Vice. That pretty much exhausts my coin pouch of knowledge regarding this indoor sport that I gather attracts a lot of wagering. Don just wants to read his paper in peace and here's the father-in-law, unpacking the war memorabilia. "Bobby, it's a dead man's hat," he says of the spiked Prussian helmet and I have to say I side with Don. Kid runs »

"Dark Shadows" is a '60s soap opera about vampires. All things supernatural really, but vampires are a big focus thanks to Jonathan Frid's character Barnabus Collins. In an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, director Tim Burton -- who will soon turn to "Dark Shadows" with frequent collaborator Johnny Depp as its star -- said that it's too early to say if fans can expect a cameo from Frid in the adaptation.
Besides, Burton has bigger "Shadows" concerns than that. "One of the biggest challenges on ['Dark Shadows'] is to just capture that weird tone of the show," he said. For now, the focus is on Burton's unfinished "Alice in Wonderland," which hits theaters in March 2010. As the director reveals in the video below, he hasn't even seen the Caterpillar yet! "Dark Shadows" will come, in due time. But first, we all need to take a trip down the rabbit hole. »

Time to get ready for even more vampires at the cineplex. After Hollywood's long zombie fixation, Twilight brought the children of the night back into vogue and now vampires are crawling out of the woodwork. HBO has True Blood, Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant opens in October, and news recently broke that Robert Downey Jr. is in consideration to play Lestat in a relaunch of Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles. Now, Johnny Depp might be playing a vampire as well in a Tim Burton-directed remake of the creepy 60s TV series Dark Shadows, which was basically a soap opera with a twist: the lead character, Barnabas Collins (played by Jonathan Frid), was afflicted with vampirism. Depp said: I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins' posters when I was five or six. When asked about the possibility of making a Dark Shadows movie, »

Without much detail, director Tim Burton has confirmed that his next project in line after "Alice In Wonderland" is finished will be the Dan Curtis television series "Dark Shadows" - that is, "if I ever finish this one." Particularly judging from preview photos of characters from the re-imagined film, Burton's "Alice" will keep him busy, indeed, until its release in March 2010. The wacky costuming, absurd characters and Alice's impossible journey, Burton said during a press conference at Comic-Con, is all just a reflection of human emotional states. In its previous incarnations, the "Alice" story has never satisfactorily fulfilled that vision. »
