Various stories popping up on Variety over the past few days that we feel warrant a bit of attention. First up we have a bit of sad news, actor Conrad Fowkes, who some may remember as a short term contract player from the original Dark Shadows and long-time secretary/treasurer of Actors' Equity Assn., lost his battle with cancer Dec 14th at the age of 76. Burton & Depp’s ‘Dark Shadows’ To Shoot Next Year

One of cinema’s great cinematic pairings is Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, who as of their latest project, the highly anticipated adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, have worked together seven times. It’s a pairing that has worked very well every single time (as far as I’m concerned).

It’s no surprise then that the duo are continuing to work together, with a feature film adaptation of ABC’s 1960s gothic soap opera, Dark Shadows, being next on their slate. This project has been rumored for a very long time, with Depp finally coming on-board (along with his company) to produce in 2007 and Burton coming onboard as director in 2008.

 

Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory scribe, John August, wrote the Dark Shadows screenplay, and just this summer Depp confirmed it’s definitely happening and that he’d be starring in it, if and when the project gets off the ground. »

With Hollywood's vampire obsession threatening to bleed the genre dry, master of the gothic Tim Burton is now adding his own project to the pile with a feature film adaptation of the TV series Dark Shadows.

The cult classic aired from 1966 to 1971 and starred Jonathan Frid as 200-year-old vampire Barnabas Collins, among its many supernatural creatures. A TV remake ran in 1991.

Johnny Depp will play the part of Collins in Burton's big-screen remake.

Last October, Entertainment Weekly claimed the project was dead but producer Graham King has now told Sci Fi Wire it's very much alive and moving forward: "We're actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny.

"We've been working on the script a lot, even though [Tim's] working on Alice. We've been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We're making some changes, but the film's going to be in production, »

Dark Shadows Begins Shooting Next Fall

While this is only incremental news, Sci-Fi Wire sat down in a roundtable with Dark Shadows producer Graham King, who confirmed that Tim Burton’s remake will begin shooting sometime next fall. Burton is currently finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland, set for a March 5th, 2010 release, and prepping the Dark Shadows script with the screenwriters. According to Sci-Fi Wire: “We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice,” King continued. “We’ve been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.” Dark Shadows was a TV series that ran on ABC between 1966 and 1971. With 'Dark Shadows,' Tim Burton's Challenge Is 'To Capture That Weird Tone Of The Show'

"Dark Shadows" is a '60s soap opera about vampires. All things supernatural really, but vampires are a big focus thanks to Jonathan Frid's character Barnabus Collins. In an interview with MTV's Josh Horowitz, director Tim Burton -- who will soon turn to "Dark Shadows" with frequent collaborator Johnny Depp as its star -- said that it's too early to say if fans can expect a cameo from Frid in the adaptation.

Besides, Burton has bigger "Shadows" concerns than that. "One of the biggest challenges on ['Dark Shadows'] is to just capture that weird tone of the show," he said. For now, the focus is on Burton's unfinished "Alice in Wonderland," which hits theaters in March 2010. As the director reveals in the video below, he hasn't even seen the Caterpillar yet! Without much detail, director Tim Burton has confirmed that his next project in line after "Alice In Wonderland" is finished will be the Dan Curtis television series "Dark Shadows" - that is, "if I ever finish this one." Particularly judging from preview photos of characters from the re-imagined film, Burton's "Alice" will keep him busy, indeed, until its release in March 2010. The wacky costuming, absurd characters and Alice's impossible journey, Burton said during a press conference at Comic-Con, is all just a reflection of human emotional states.
