Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play The Riddler

10 December 2009 2:17 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

From comedian Dane Cook to the fans themselves, it seems that everybody is crossing their fingers that The Riddler will show up in the eventual sequel to "The Dark Knight."

While the villain's involvement in a third "Batman" film is far from confirmed — heck, the actual existence of "Batman 3" is speculative at this point — it's worth wondering who could play Edward Nigma should he wind up in Christopher Nolan's return to Gotham City.

Given Nolan's proclivity towards a darker, more realistic tone than his live-action "Batman" predecessors, it's important to steer clear of actors that would take a hammy, parody-riddled approach to The Riddler. This is a character that should have wit and humor, sure, but also pose a threat. With those qualities in mind, I think that these five actors would do an excellent job at confounding the citizens of Gotham in an eventual "Batman 3."

[TV] Zorro: The Complete First Season

5 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Not long ago, I sort of chastised Disney for a series of DVD releases of older material on the basis that they did not have a clear idea of who the set was intended for. I felt a little bad about it, but that was before I took a look at their new Disney Treasures collection of the new season of Zorro. It’s become somewhat vogue to criticize the Disney company (Lord knows how many times Family Guy has held up their product as an object of ridicule), but there’s really no two ways around it: when they set their mind to it, they really have no serious competition, and this new Zorro set speaks to that tradition of excellence. It’s really, really cool.

For many Americans (particularly those of the ‘television generation’, as Leonard Maltin repeatedly refers to it in his introduction), the Disney primetime television …

Green Hornet star Seth Rogen 'feels like a sell-out'

4 October 2009 12:42 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

After low-quality set pictures of Seth Rogen's superhero movie Green Hornet surfaced a few days ago, SplashNews released some much better images, one of which is included here.

It shows Rogen as the title character, a playboy newspaper publisher with an alter-ego as a masked crimefighter, and his martial arts sidekick Kato, played by Jay Chou. You may recall that Van Williams and Bruce Lee played the parts in a TV show back in the 60s and also guest-starred in the Batman series on air at the same time.

Rogen, previously known as a chubby comedy actor, has had to force himself to lose weight for the role, reports The Daily Mail.

He said: "I've been eating better and training - and hating myself for it. I feel like a sell-out, I feel lame, I feel like a guy I would make fun of."

He shed pounds by eating …

Michael Fassbender Likens 'Jonah Hex' Role To The Riddler

10 August 2009 11:34 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

There's an old adage that says the clothes make the man. In the case of "Jonah Hex" actor Michael Fassbender, that quote was taken quite literally.

In the upcoming DC Comics adaptation, Fassbender plays Burke, a tattooed henchman at odds with Josh Brolin's titular gunslinger. The actor told Sci Fi Wire that he was able to access the role through the very simple but effective method of channeling his costume. The result, as Fassbender described it, was a cross between a "Clockwork Orange" villain and Frank Gorshin's classic portrayal of Batman nemesis The Riddler.

"Burke on the page was a certain sort of character, but then when I arrived in New Orleans and met up with Michael Wilkinson and Christien Tinsley, who did the tattoo, they really gave me all of the information I needed," he said.

"I put on this three-piece suit, and then I was going through hats, …

Green Hornet: Seth Rogen on finding Kato and working with Michel Gondry

21 July 2009 12:51 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Seth Rogen'S superhero project Green Hornet has taken a varied flight path since it was announced.

Despite the film being plagued by persistent rumours to the contrary, Rogen insists it's going ahead and has laughed off yet more suggestions that his Hornet has been exterminated.

Rogen co-wrote the film with Evan Goldberg and will star as Daily Sentinel newspaper publisher Britt Reid who, by night, becomes the eponymous masked hero with a sidekick named Kato and a hi-tech car called Black Beauty.

Last week, there seemed to be a setback for the movie when it was confirmed that Stephen Chow had left the project. He had been set to play Kato and at one stage had also been set to direct the film.

Rogen (pictured above on left) says the Hornet is definitely still buzzing, no matter what online rumour-mongers are saying.

He told Ain't It Cool News: "We're building sets. …

Johnny Depp Wants to be The Riddler in Batman 3

23 June 2009 10:30 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

At this point, everyone is still unsure about whether a third "Batman" movie will ever happen. But just in case that it does, MTV News wanted to know if Johnny Depp would consider joining the cast as The Riddler. "It seems that it would be alright. I always liked the Riddler," said Depp. "I always liked Frank Gorshin (actor who played The Riddler in the 60s "Batman" show). Frank Gorshin was brilliant, I always thought he was a great actor. If the opportunity came, I would definitely juggle it." Depp is pretty busy right now with "The Lone Ranger," "Pirates of the Caribbean 4" and many other projects getting ready to go into production. But it seems that he is willing to squeeze in "Batman 3," even though he also revealed that he will not make room in his schedule for Terry Gilliam's "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote." …

Johnny Depp up for the Riddler, Eddie Murphy eager to be Egghead

23 June 2009 6:43 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Johnny Depp says he would consider playing the Riddler if offered the role in a future Batman movie.

The villain was played by Frank Gorshin in the 60s Batman TV series and by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.

False reports in The National Enquirer last year suggested that Depp was already cast in the role.

Depp, pictured here in his role in upcoming crime drama Public Enemies, told MTV: "If the opportunity came, I'd definitely juggle it. I always liked the Riddler.

"I always liked Frank Gorshin. Frank Gorshin was brilliant. I always thought he was a great actor."

Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy, who was rumoured by The Sun last year to have landed the role of the Riddler, recently sold The Tonight Show: "I heard that rumour as well. I don't know anything about it. But I would love to be in one of those Batman movies."

Murphy praised …

Johnny Depp Open to Playing The Riddler

23 June 2009 4:58 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Last summer, when all systems were go for a third Batman movie - in spite of the fact that all systems actually were not even be discussed - Johnny Depp emerged as the hot choice to play The Riddler. You remember that, right? Depp would wear question marks and Angelina Jolie was stalking Christopher Nolan to make her Catwoman, except none of it was supported by any facts whatsoever?

Now MTV has asked Depp about playing the Batvillain and he seems open to the possibility. Of course, Depp's pricetag makes him consider just about any serious offer, I'm guessing. "It seems that it would be alright. I always liked the Riddler," said Depp. "I always liked Frank Gorshin (who famously played the role on TV 40 years ago). Frank Gorshin was brilliant, I always thought he was a great actor."

"If the opportunity came, I would definitely juggle it," Depp confirmed. …

Johnny Depp Open to 'Batman 3', Christian Bale Unsure

The future of "Batman 3" is still up in the air, but Johnny Depp has opened door to possibility of him joining the cast as the Riddler. During an interview with MTV in promoting his forthcoming "Public Enemies", the Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of Caribbean" trilogy states that he is willing to take the role of the puzzle-hurling villain.

When asked about the likelihood of him portraying the baddie, the 46-year-old simply says, "If the opportunity came, I'd definitely juggle it." He adds by confessing his admiration to both the character and Frank Gorshin, the actor playing the baddie in the '60s-era TV show. "I always liked the Riddler," he explains. "I always liked Frank Gorshin. Frank Gorshin was brilliant. I always thought he was a great actor."

Murphy Riddled Over Batman Reports

11 June 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Eddie Murphy has laughed off reports he's competing to play the The Riddler in the next Batman sequel - insisting studio bosses have not approached him about the villainous role.

The comedian and actor Johnny Depp have been rumoured favourites to recreate the role made famous on screen by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever and on TV by Frank Gorshin, who died in 2005.

Murphy insists he's been passed up for the part, but admits he'd jump at the chance to take on the Caped Crusader.

And he's taking advantage of the media speculation by asking studio executives to bring back 1960s villain Egghead for a future film.

He says, "I've heard that rumour as well and I don't know anything about it. Whoever is really playing The Riddler is sitting at home calling his agent going, 'We've got to get this rumour stopped.' I would love to be in one of those Batman movies. Jim Carrey did The Riddler once and he did a wonderful job. Egghead, I could be Egghead." …
