Based on a Thomas Hardy novel,"far from the madding crowd" is visually a splendor.Nicolas Roeg's cinematography (Roeg would direct Christie in "Don't look back" ) is dazzling and the English country landscapes a feast for the eye.So is Julie Christie.
A bit slow-moving -but certainly less than "Barry Lindon" "far from the madding crowd" depicts the loves and times of a rich heiress wooed by three men: a wealthy farmer (Finch) ,a handsome military man (Stamp) and a shepherd (Bates).The character of Bathsheba is feminist before feminism:she claims her firm independence of men even if she feels her power over them.
The movie inspired Ray Davis (the Kinks) a famous song called "Waterloo sunset" .Terry and Julie being Christie and Stamp.
