10 Most Fascinating 'End of the World' Movies

11 hours ago | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

There are many theories, ideas or should I say 'schools of thought' on how the world would end. At the height of the Cold War, nuclear annihilation ranks at the very top. While others argue it will not be man who will destroy the world (directly) but - an epidemic of global proportions (most probably from a potent strain of virus - think: I am Legend) or severe climactic change (another ice age perhaps? That would be Day After Tommorow right?) or mechanical uprising (The Terminator, anyone?) or even attack from the outside - conquering aliens (Mars Attacks!) or perhaps an asteroid. And let's not forget zombies!

Free Flick of the Day: Night of the Living Dead

4 November 2009 1:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If there were any justice, George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) would be counted as one of the great movie debuts of all time. (Yes, up there next to Citizen Kane.) In some quarters it is, but the fact that it's a horror film and the fact that it has languished for decades in the public domain (and many, many cheap, sub-par VHS tapes and DVDs) counts against it. Not to mention that younger zombie fans that come to the movie for the first time will most likely be surprised -- and probably disappointed -- as to how slow and thoughtful it really is. But if you consider things besides gore and terror to be important in your horror movies, then Night of the Living Dead endures, not just as one of the great genre movies of all time, but one of the greatest movies ever made, period. »

WWE Planning Old West Undertaker Origin Movie

4 November 2009 8:50 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

We’ve seen a lot of origin stories in the past few years – Wolverine just came out this summer, Magneto may or may not be happening, there is always Superman and of course Batman’s origin has been told several times. Heck, The Hobbit can even be considered an origin story. Ghost Rider was unfortunately given an origin movie that dated back to the old west. I’m a huge fan of Tremors and the 4th movie went back to the old west as well, for an origin story about the subterranean monster worm.

So I understand why studios and copyright holders want to make origin movies on comic book characters and even monsters, but I cannot for the life of me figure out this latest news coming from “wrastlin” news site Lords of Pain. WWE, in a bid to capitalize on one of their brands, is in the process »

Corbin Bernsen Wants to Make a Zombie Baseball Movie

4 November 2009 2:15 AM, PST | HugAZombie | See recent HugAZombie news »

Corbin Bernsen wants to blend zombies and baseball. Sounds like a joke right? It's not.

Bernsen spoke to Fangoria a week ago at the Worcester, Ma's Rock and Shock convention, where his directorial effort Dead Air was screening, and spoke about the project as a very real possibility.

It's called Three Strikes, You're Dead. I come to these conventions and meet people, and there are two things they like: They enjoy horror, but they're also into the Major League movies I was in. And this is kind of a revenge thing—I heard they're doing Major League 4 and they aren't including my character, and I got kind of pissed off, so I thought, "I'm gonna get 'em back. I'm gonna do a zombie baseball movie."

It's set about 30 years in the future in Pittsburgh—a little tribute to George Romero and Night of the Living Dead. The undead have been »

The War Game d: Peter Watkins

The War Game (1965) Direction and Screenplay: Peter Watkins Narration: Michael Aspel and Peter Graham     By Dan Schneider of Cosmoetica: For anyone who thinks that those 50-pack mega-dvd sets of public domain films put out by several different video companies are worthless, I would argue that the amount of films you get for the money is worth it, even if all were mediocre, and that the truth is: each DVD package will come with at least 8-10 enjoyable films, a few true classics like Carnival of Souls or Night of the Living Dead, and every so often a great little film will pop up that makes the package a total steal. One such 50-pack I [...] »

Zombie-alert: Red-band trailer drops for George A. Romero’s ‘Survival of the Dead’

The father of the modern zombie returns with Survival of the Dead.

Check out the red-band trailer for the upcoming film. Beware youngsters, this is for mature audiences. In the two minutes, you can witness the zombies doing zombie things like eating people, looking menacing and walking slowly.

“On a small island off North America’s coast, the dead rise to menace the living. Although they are endangering their lives, the locals can’t bring themselves to exterminate their loved ones and are determined to find the cure. When a rebel assassinates his neighbors and friends, they banish him from the island.

Bent on revenge, he encounters a small band of survivors on the mainland and joins forces with them to return to the island and kill the flesh-eaters. But, as they get into the island, they discover to their horror the locals have chained the dead inside their homes, »

Halloween's best TV: Spooky viewing if you're sticking close to home tonight

31 October 2009 10:56 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Maybe you never quite got around to assembling the perfect Peggy Olson costume, and you'd rather stay at home than be seen in last year's Holly Golightly again. Or maybe you'd prefer giving candy to the kiddies to braving the masses of be-costumed drunks. In any case, you need something spooky to watch tonight after dark, and God knows that if you didn't get on the costume thing, you didn't stock up on holiday-appropriate Netflix picks either. Good news: TV is totally on it! AMC concludes its week-long "FearFest" movie marathon with a remastered version of Night of the Living Dead at 8 p. »

What's On: Medium of the Living Dead

30 October 2009 3:50 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

If CBS had not revived Medium after NBC snuffed it out last May, fans would have never seen tonight's special Halloween episode in which Allison (Patricia Arquette) is placed into certain scenes of George Romero's classic horror flick Night of the Living Dead. In the sequences, which come to Allison while she's asleep, Arquette takes over the role of Barbara (originally played by Judith O'Dea). Given how frequently Arquette's character lapses into bizarre nightmares though, it would have seemed just as natural for Allison to pop up in Nell or Soul Plane. »

The 10 Greatest Zombie Movies Ever Made

29 October 2009 10:49 AM, PDT | MovieRetriever | See recent MovieRetriever news »

Oct 29, 2009

Is there anyone out there that doesn’t enjoy a good zombie movie? The recent success of Zombieland, the popularity of the cinema of the undead suggests that there isn’t. Zombie Cinema is a genre that owes its beginning to the seminal Night of the Living Dead in the late 1960s. But, it’s also one that has shown remarkable growth over the last few years as renewed interest in the genre has produced films like 28 Days Later, Dead Snow, Pontypool, and even remakes of some of the genres more enduring ...Read more at MovieRetriever.com »

Land of the Dead

29 October 2009 6:40 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Land of the Dead Directed by George A. Romero Although the fourth installment in George A. Romero's influential zombie series may not have the overall impact of the groundbreaking Night of the Living Dead, 2004 entry Land of the Dead proves that after four nearly four decades, he's still got the undead touch. The horror maestro has come a long way since his seminal 1968 classic, and Land is a satisfyingly splatter feast of gore and new ideas. Witty, clever and action-packed, this time around Romero benefits from the backing of a major studio. Playing with bigger stars - Land is the first Dead picture with name actors - and a higher budget of about $15 million, the slick production values and larger scope allow the director to more fully express his violent visions. Romero has a gift for lacing carnage with social commentary, and here he creates a radical and rebellious »

Tom Hanks, Tokio Hotel And More Reveal Horror Films They Would Remake

Everyone knows that Hollywood is addicted to franchises, sequels, reboots and all manner of cinematic rehashings of the pop-culture past. Over 75 percent of the 30 highest-grossing films of the last three years were based on an existing entertainment franchise, which just goes to show there's a reason studios keep reimagining movie history instead of creating something new: audiences love them too.

But do actors? With Halloween almost upon us, we wanted to know if the folks out in La-La Land secretly had a horror flick they're dying to remake.

Tom Hanks' fave picks — "Night of the Living Dead" and " Nosferatu" — have already been refashioned in one form or another, so the Oscar-winner »

It's time to celebrate the era of polyester, disco, punk rock and platform shoes! The year is 1978 and the dead rise once again to terrorize Coterie audiences trapped in Crown Center's Off Centre Theatre during Maul of the Dead, runs through October 31. The world premiere, by Mitch Brian and directed by Ron MeGee, is inspired by the favorite zombie movie of all time, Dawn of the Dead. Convention Report: Rock And Shock, October 18th

Lots of Snow and Juggalos

Sometimes I go to a faraway convention and say to myself, “This was well worth the trip.”  Whether it be a long flight or car trip (not interrupted by hitting a deer, preferably), with weather variables, travel obstacles and bleary-eyed exhaustion added to the mix, the convention at the center of it all pays off.  Such was the case with the Rock and Shock Weekend in Worcester, Ma that I attended on October 18th.  Even with one aborted interview, a wet snowstorm and a bevy of Juggalos, I can’t help but smile at the thought of this con.

Along for the ride were my cantankerous buddy John (he used to go by Brando) who I’ve known since high school, and a more recent friend Jonathan, who’s as much a staple on the circuit as some of the guests.  Each of us had »

Exclusive: 'The Crazies' Pic Shows Us Radha Mitchell Going Crazy

28 October 2009 12:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"The Crazies." One of the mad works from "Night of the Living Dead" director George Romero. Also, a soon-to-release remake from Overture Films, directed by Breck Eisner and hitting theaters on February 26, 2010. The story involves a small Iowa town in which a government experiment is accidentally leaked into the water supply. The locals all get sick, turning into depraved, zombie-like creatures. A bunch of crazies, if you will. Check out MTV's set visit coverage from earlier this year...

After the jump you'll find an exclusive image from the movie, a gift from Overture to further boost our week of Halloween coverage. In the pic you'll see star Radha Mitchell strapped to a gurney, her eye flooded with terror. I can't tell you why, but I can tell you that MTV's Eric Ditzian has a cameo in this scene. He's a movie star! Hit the jump to share in Mitchell's terror. »
