Gimme Shelter: Criterion Collection Blu-ray Review

Though it may be beyond the grasp of today's musically inclined youth, there actually was a time when the Rolling Stones lived up to their moniker of "the World's Greatest Rock n' Roll Band." Wanting to capture the Stones at the height of their powers, filmmakers Charlotte Zwerin and Albert and David Maysles set out to chronicle their 1969 U.S. tour. And while we get a bit of the Madison Square Garden performance (memorialized on the live album "Get Your Ya Ya's Out") and some behind the scenes mixing (most of which became their next studio album "Sticky Fingers"), the eventual documentary Gimme Shelter (1970) concentrates on the band as they gear up for, perform at and reflect on Altamont.

Blu-Ray Review: Much More Than a Tour Chronicled in ‘Gimme Shelter’

Chicago – If the 1969 U.S. tour of The Rolling Stones had gone smoothly, David Maysles, Albert Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin’s “Gimme Shelter” would still be one of the best music documentaries ever made. Of course, as everyone who knows anything about music or pop culture history knows, the tour did not go smoothly, ending in the infamous concert at Altamont Speedway that’s often pointed to as the end of the era of love.

The Criterion Collection, continuing a pattern of releasing their music documentaries on Blu-Ray before other selections, brings this riveting document of the end of an era through a band in its prime to the world of HD.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

“Gimme Shelter” opens with a photo shoot and one of the best live performances of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” ever put on film (and probably ever recorded). Clearly, this is a band at the top of the rock ‘n’ roll game. »

Love in Vain

f Woodstock was the cathartic high of 60s rock concerts, then Altamont was the bum trip. Criterion's Blu-Ray release of Gimme Shelter, the 1970 documentary about the Rolling Stones show that brought the Summer of Love to a violent end, is a reminder of how delicate and unlikely that hippie miracle dramatized earlier this year in Ang Lee's rosy-cheeked Taking Woodstock really was.

Altamont–which descended into chaos, leaving four spectators dead–represents the dark side of rock the Stones had tapped in to with hits like "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Paint it Black." But it's fair to say Mick & Co. didn't see this one coming. It was a free concert at a desert speedway in Marin County, and the Stones hired the Hell's Angels to handle their security. At first, it seemed like a good move: the 300,000-plus fans, many of them high, were doing all sorts of unpredictable things. »

I have yet to see Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones concert doc Shine a Light despite owning the Blu-ray. I simply have no real interest in seeing it. So, when I received Criterion's Blu-ray edition of their 2000 release Gimme Shelter there wasn't any rush to give it a watch, but regardless of musical tastes this is more of a documentary than it is a musical concert event.

This is a moment captured in time as the Rolling Stones (along with the likes of Santana, Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills and Nash) set out to put on a free concert in San Francisco when the decision to incorporate the Hells Angels as part of concert security over approximately 300,000 people at San Francisco's Altamont Speedway results in mass hysteria. Influential programmer for the Nft and London film festival

Anyone whose love of the cinema was burnished by the National Film Theatre in the 1970s and early 80s owes a considerable debt to Ken Wlaschin, who has died aged 75. He not only programmed the theatre for some 15 years, but also directed the London film festival. During that time, he expanded both indefatigably, often in the teeth of financial constraints.

At first, when the Nft had only a single auditorium, he also edited the monthly programme booklet, writing the notes and cropping the photographs himself. By the time he left, there were two auditoriums, a restaurant and a clubroom, putting the Nft (now called the BFI Southbank) on a par with the famous cinematheques of Paris, Brussels and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The festival was also enlarged to well over 130 films and drew journalists from all over the world. »

After being trapped in TV land, Supernatural sets up a little fan convention this week as Wincest fanfiction writer Becky (guest star Emily Perkins) returns. Not everyone was pleased when Becky first appeared in the fifth season opener "Sympathy For The Devil," since the thought of Sam and Dean hooking up made a lot of fans sick but perhaps her comeback in this week's "The Real Ghostbusters" will shed her in a different light.

Purgatorio: A Halloween Indulgence for Adults

Regardless of what others might say, Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. I know that many will say Christmas (be they themselves Christians or secular) but I have to believe that those individuals who do are either sold over on all the presents (secularists) or trying to score points with the big man upstairs by favoring his son birthday (Christians). For me personally, growing up, no holiday would ever match the sheer joy that came with dressing in costume, eating enough candy to induce a diabetic coma, and hurling eggs at my cousin Darrin who just couldn’t seem to catch on that I never found his homemade outfits of Saturday morning cartoon characters from some bygone era twenty years past, interesting, or unique, or fun in any way, shape, or form.

Sadly, in my adult life, I find it’s a bit harder to come across interesting ways »

Supernatural: Stills from Upcoming Episodes 7 and 8

It's a miserable week for Supernatural fans -- no new episode, but rather a repeat of the Season 5 premiere, "Sympathy for the Devil". But to make up for it, The CW has provided a batch of new photos from Episodes 7 and 8, "The Curious Case Of Dean Winchester" and "Changing Channels", respectively.

First is "The Curious Case...", in which Bobby (Jim Beaver) risks his life by betting 25 years of his life on a poker game run by a witch. Dean tries to save Bobby but ends up drastically aging. The episode was written by Jen Klein (story) and Julie Siege (story and teleplay) with Robert Singer directing.

Do You Have Sympathy for the Devil on 'Supernatural'?

I know it's wrong to say, but I'm really loving the Devil this season on Supernatural.  Lucifer is a fascinating and compelling character, and whether he's played by Mark Pellegrino or Jared Padalecki, I just want more Lucifer on my screen.

This should come as no surprise, since villains are always more beloved than heroes.  Christian Bale didn't win an Oscar for The Dark Knight, but Heath Ledger did.  Gossip Girl fans love Chuck Bass but get bored with Dan.  And at this year's Emmys, awards were given to a drug dealer, a murderous lawyer, and Lost's Benjamin Linus. »

The Winchester brothers continue their jaunt down the Highway to Hell this week with the episode "Good God Y'all".  Click through for some spoilers and clips from the episode.

For you sentimental Supernatural fans (is there really any other type?) this week will be a big one as the boys run into Ellen (Samantha Ferris) and Jo.  Good times.  Things are ramping up as the apocalypse begins to take shape, while Bobby gets some bad news from Castiel, kind of reinforcing my theory from the "Sympathy For The Devil" recap that Zacharia will be the only one who can actually heal Bobby.

When we last saw Sam & Dean Winchester, they were staring down a face-to-face meeting with the Big Bad himself, Lucifer. And that's where we pick right back up for the epic and awesome season five opener. So, you'll forgive my fan girl gushing for a bit, but there are very few series that start their fifth season stronger than they did their first, and this episode surpassed a lot of the high expectations I had.

Not only do we get a kick ass fight scene, a possessed Bobby, and a tearful and heartfelt apology for starting Armageddon from Sam, but we finally meet Satan, and surprise, he's a pretty sympathetic fellow.

Basically, it boils down to this: the angles are back, the demons are creating havoc on Earth, everyone's raging for a Apocalyptic war and Dean is The Vessel. »

Five Torches (Out of Five) Warning: This review contains spoilers for the "Sympathy for the Devil" episode of Supernatural. A fascinating new villain in Lucifer. More hilarious "Wincest" humor. A terrific continuation of the Dean/Sam conflict. Readers of this site know that I think that Supernatural is one of the best (and most underrated) shows on television -- and that the last season was the series' best so far (by far). If last night's fifth season premiere was any indication, it looks as if the show is continuing its winning streak. There are so many things I loved about last night's episode that it's almost difficult to know where to begin. For one, how great is it that Lucifer can't lie -- or chooses not to (or is maybe lying about the whole "can't-lie" thing)? »

The CW continues its first week of fall premieres tonight with the series premiere of The Vampire Diaries and the season 5 premiere of Supernatural, showcasing The CW's supernatural (no pun intended) Thursday night lineup!

First up is The Vampire Diaries, which probably fits somewhere smack in between Twilight and True Blood.  Based on the series of books by L. J. Smith which, at it's heart, is a story about two vampire brothers, one good, one evil, both fighting for the soul of a woman named Elena who reminds them both of someone from their past.  But through it all not only Elena's soul is at stake, but also the souls of her friends, family, and all of the residents of Mystic Falls, Virginia.
