The German version includes a unique prologue and epilogue in a psychiatrist's where Severin's sadomasochism is judged to be the result of insanity. These scenes were probably added to justify some of his behaviour in-between, to the German censors, although confusingly the German version is much more explicit than versions that don't carry this intro and outro.
The film was initially rejected for UK cinema in 1969 before being passed with cuts the following year, and the 1993 Redemption video release suffered 2 minutes 32 secs of cuts for sex and violence. The 2007 Shameless DVD saw the cuts reduced to 1 minute with edits to shots from a rape scene in which a woman's reactions turn from terrified screams into sexual pleasure.
