• The German version includes a unique prologue and epilogue in a psychiatrist's where Severin's sadomasochism is judged to be the result of insanity. These scenes were probably added to justify some of his behaviour in-between, to the German censors, although confusingly the German version is much more explicit than versions that don't carry this intro and outro.
  
  
• The film was initially rejected for UK cinema in 1969 before being passed with cuts the following year, and the 1993 Redemption video release suffered 2 minutes 32 secs of cuts for sex and violence. The 2007 Shameless DVD saw the cuts reduced to 1 minute with edits to shots from a rape scene in which a woman's reactions turn from terrified screams into sexual pleasure.
